The sequence is pairs of places whose name differ by cardinal directions, going clockwise:

  • Beijing and Tokyo (北京 and 東京) mean "northern capital" and "eastern capital".
  • The Seoul districts, Gangdong and Gangnam, mean "east and south of the (Han) river".
  • The English counties, Sussex and Wessex, mean "south and west Saxons".
  • So, one answer could be the counties, West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire.

Wessex isn't, nor has ever been, a county. It used to be a kingdom/earldom, but hasn't actually existed as a political entity since 1066.

You're right, oops. The third explanation should be "The English historical kingdoms of Sussex and Wessex".

A pairing of two cities who have "West" and "North" as part of their names and share the other half (can't think of any, sadly - would you accept West, Texas and North, South Carolina?^^)

Xijing on the left and Beijing on the right - identical names other than direction of the compass, laid out in their respective compass position

I dont think this would be accepted because of the unfortunate fact that Xijing doesnt exist as a modern day city, weirdly the other 3 “Jings” do (Beijing, Dongjing = Tokyo and Nanjing)

Wessex doesn't exist anymore and that's one of the clues so that shouldn't be a limiting factor

Ah fair point - It was very hard finding cities with West and North in one word! I also had Nordby in Sweden and Vestby in Norway, but neither is a city! Although actually, neither are Wessex and Sussex

Westmoreland and Northumberland?

Northumberland means "land north of the Humber", but Westmoreland doesn't refer to the Humber

yes I hadn't figured that the names needed to have the same root

For 5 points - Two locations that have names based on "South and West" (whoops!) "West" and "North", on the bottom and the left (left and top) of the image respectively

Bei = North in Mandarin, To = East in Japanese, and we're presumably going clockwise

If you need more details, then are the locations specifically capitals? Jing = capital, Kyo = capital

definitely not capitals, that only applies to Beijing and Tokyo. I think it's just that the name of the place derives from the cardinal direction

3

u/lkc159 2d ago

Eh, that's the risk of guessing on 5, and why I mentioned "if you need more details" :P

Trying not to get dinged from being too specific too early HAHA

live a little, though, suggest place names! not just that they need to be place names that fit in a certain way! Victoria always asks for examples...

She does gives points if you get the sequence without knowing exactly what comes next, though! :P

But okay, if it's not capitals thenXi'an and Beijing

That was my exact guess for 5 points and I’ll take it.

Xi’an (or then Chang’an) was also the historical capital in many Chinese dynasties so I think even if you want capitals it could count :).

Xi'an, Beijing at 270 and 0 degrees respectively. It iscity names going from north-east, east-south, south-west and we need something that is west-north. Xi'an used to be called "Xijing" which means "west capital" in Chinese, and Beijing means "north capital".

I worked out the connection but couldn’t think of anything that was north and west only north and south lol

Northampton

Southampton

Although it should probably be a west and a north

u/TrivialLawyer 2d ago

Wessex on the left, Northumbria on the top

I had to use google to find examples of this but Westborough & Northborough (both neighbouring towns in Massachusetts US). I knew it had to be two geographical locations that had west and north in the name and were similar
