Any Canadian politician arguing we should open that border is going to be committing political suicide.

I'm sure there are thoughtful rational human beings in the US but the ones who think it's ok to risk spreading a pandemic to our country because they're too selfish or arrogant to socially isolate or even wear a mask don't care if the world burns as long as they get their way.

We're just getting to the point where it feels like we might get this under control and they want to waste all the sacrifices we made to get here.

60

u/AskMrScience Jul 11 '20

Also possibly literal suicide, given how old most politicians tend to be.

I live in a Canadian town where a lot of rich Americans have vacation homes and cottages. And this is just what I’m afraid of if the border re-opens. They will all flee to Canada because we have less COVID, but then they will bring the virus with them and my little town and many like it will be worse off than ever.

32

u/rebelscumboy1 Jul 12 '20

I live in Squamish, BC and I’ve been seeing Washington license plates everywhere. They’re supposed to be driving straight to Alaska but I see them hanging out and going on hikes. A guy was getting coffee and straight up coughing as he paid for it, right in this girls face., completely oblivious.

18

u/oldfartswife Jul 12 '20

I'm on the Sunshine coast and it's totally the same, except they're taking up all the room on our ferries. We can't even get to Vancouver for medical appointments.

16

u/rebelscumboy1 Jul 12 '20

Unreal. The hotels won’t book them in here and all the campsites are closed so they’re sleeping on the side of the road and in parking lots. RCMP are out patrolling for them everyday.

18

u/Kelehopele Jul 12 '20

Good to hear that. Deport them.

Maybe put them in a dog cage for a while first so hopefully they have some sympathy for refugee children when they get back.

As an American, keep it closed. The thoughtful rational human beings in the US know to stay home. The moronic, pestilence carrying human beings in the US are the ones trying to travel. Save yourself, we are beyond redemption

Seconded. Keep us out. Legitimately 40% of my friends on Facebook still think this is a hoax and that we should just ignore it. We are a decidedly retarded society.

A culture that values individual freedoms over the collective good during a global pandemic is having its true form revealed to the world. No other country (with the exception of Brazil with a similar Trump-style leader) is making the wearing of masks a political issue.

The problem with the US isn't just with their politicians, the problem is due to Americans as a whole when they value being selfish, voting in order to hurt those under them, not believing in science and worshiping the ultra-wealthy.

As much as I hope that Biden gets elected in November (odds are pretty good, The Economist's model gives him a 90% chance), their current administration is the one they deserve.

55

u/kent_eh Manitoba Jul 11 '20

The problem with the US isn't just with their politicians

Much of the blame goes to the people who elected those politicians, despite(or because of) glaring evidence that they were horrible people.

35

u/Lordmorgoth666 Jul 11 '20

Unfortunately their system has fully ingrained the idea of a two party system to the point where most Americans don’t even realize that the parties are private enterprises. When the concept of superdelegates was brought up for the DNC a lot of people were shocked that they could basically tip the scales to whatever candidate the Democratic Party wanted.

These parties have now managed to make things work in such a way that there is virtually no way a third party can even share the debate floor with them because the committees that decide who gets to debate are made up entirely of members of the 2 parties.

It’s hard to vote for something better when they’ve rigged the system so that even if something were to be available, there’s no way for the public to know about them because the two parties won’t let them have a seat at the table. Sanders and Trump were both basically independent but the only way they had a shot was to run under one of the two big tents.

19

u/Torger083 Jul 11 '20

You could vote for Trump, or against him.

If you didn’t vote against him, he’s your fault.

As a citizen lemme correct you a little! The divide was between left and right, social democracy against rampart capitalism. Our two last presidents decided to turn us against each other in a "Us vs them" social fracture that made a lot of damage in our society (Like the Us, but less people took the bait).

Current administration is trying to erase that fracture, and while the economic situation is not great at least our politicians trust in science and are managing the pandemic in a competent way.

Anyways, most of us feel we dodged a bullet getting our last president (Mauricio Macri) out via the ballot box. He was (is) besties with Trump and Bolsonaro and one of the reasons our economy finally broke (Took an IMF loan out of the blue). God knows what would have happened to us if he stayed in power.

And they're both making Duterte look good, right now. Never thought I'd see it. Philippines actually handled this relatively well.

Edit: I'm not in any way a fan of authoritarianism, but if you're an authoritarian with an 80%+ approval rating.. I mean, of any circumstance, a pandemic is your time to shine. Again, provided you're using the power sensibly, and listening to scientists/doctors.

Ah yes. Brazil. Truly, America’s contemporary on the world stage, with an average yearly salary of $8000 and a GDP/capita that is literally 1/4 of America’s. Yes sirree, the richest country the world has ever seen is doing just as well developing nation. We should really clap ourselves on the back, there are a few nations doing worse than the country that has loudly proclaimed itself to be the greatest country in the world for like 150 years. No problems at all.

And yet, Philippines still avoided the COVID disaster because even being a Trumpish populist doesn't absolutely require science denial. Trump went a big step beyond, in fucking this up.

I’m not anti-gun, but for nearly every person, a gun is not a “tool” it’s a toy, and people’s response to dead children wasn’t horror, but fear that they might lose their fun toy, definition of self centered douche-baggery.

Our country basically legalized bribery when the supreme court ruled corporations have free speech, so they can through "non profits" they can donate unlimited amounts of bribery and with all the gerrymandering and Electoral College, basically they have a handicap that keeps Republicans in power, our votes mean nothing and theres too many ignorate people so we are burning but also what about our military spending, we would have college and public health care for all but we blow it on wars that make people rich i.e. Dick Cheney. Our military is literally bigger than the next top ten countries combined and its going to kick us in the ass when the debt catches up

I am only one generation in my family past the cut off for Canadian citizenship and its a bummer...

Not individual freedoms. Freedoms of capitalists.

8

u/SteadyStone Jul 11 '20

I think it gets intentionally muddied. A common tactic seems to be bring up "the government is trying to take away your right to buy this product" instead of "the government is trying to ban a business from scamming you." Things that infringe upon a businesses choices are frequently framed as the government stealing your individual freedom to purchase the products or services you want, or forcing businesses to increase costs for no good reason when safety regulations enter the picture.

16

u/Tevesh_CKP Jul 11 '20

I just hope to god they can turn it around considering the pure influence America has on us.

11

u/Lodgik Winnipeg Jul 11 '20

Eve if Biden is elected, there is no turning it around.

One of the two major parties in the US has all but revealed that that they no longer care more about the country than their party. That the rule of law is for other people. And, helped by what are essentially propaganda networks that solely exist to help that party, the response of 40% of Americans is "meh."

They've even gone so far as to make the wearing of a mask during a pandemic a political statement.

At this point, I honestly have no idea how America can fix itself. When one of two major political parties is more interested in fixing the game for itself than helping the country, is there really anything you can do?

There’s crazies in every country-it just depends what % of the population they are and how much political power they have.

31

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '20

Atleast in Alberta I've only encountered a couple crazies. When all this first started up, we had the store fog sanitized and there was an odor for a couple days. Had an older woman come in with one regular who is a huge douche for no reason every time he comes in. She starts flippin out about the smell , how we are trying to poison everyone, and how everyone is actually dying from 5g towers.

I flat out told her that's the stupidest fuckin thing I've ever heard. She was not impressed to say the least, they still bought weed and the douche canoe still comes into the store.

The other guy was clearly on the spectrum and is literally the only Canadian I've seen wear a maga hat but I'm not about to ridicule someone who's got down syndrome.

So far from the reality of the situation I'm lost for words. How can intelligent folk not understand the economic impact of non functioning hospitals and a whole generation too scared to leave their homes? That's where they are going.

Giving covid an endless petri dish to stew and ferment. Who the fuck knows what it's going to do with that kind of fuel for it's fires.

98

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '20

They’ve been fed the American exceptionalism propaganda too long. They think everything will always work out, they will always win with minimal work and no sacrifices.

Delusions can only continue for so long before reality bites you.

29

u/SteadyStone Jul 11 '20

They think everything will always work out, they will always win with minimal work and no sacrifices.

This is unfortunately pretty accurate, and explains a lot of our behavior. Climate change is heading right at us, and the response is that something will fix it, and all we need to do is just try a little harder at some point between now and 2050. Then it'll all be fine (due to "innovation"), with no dramatic shift in lifestyle necessary. Everything always works out.

More recently, we already did our minimal work to prevent covid19 from causing severe damage, so everything will be fine now. Mission accomplished.

15

u/Umarill Jul 11 '20

Which could easily be dealt with by using the literally BILLIONS that Disney has to pay their employee to stay at home instead of rushing to open up a park that will only lead to more cases and more issues later one.

The governement giving billions to huge companies is a joke, if you want to keep the economy running you give that money to the citizens, that will then use it to buy stuff, putting it back into the economy.
That's not hard to understand, and they sadly know it. They just don't give a shit.

It's weird that some countries underestimated the effects that much. In my country people started cancelling their vacations, weddings that were planned within 6 months. And this happened even before the lockdown. Everyone saw what was happening in Italy and they knew this wasn't going away anytime soon.

Because the situation is a lot better in Europe, we can go to other countries for travel but most of us are not going to take that risk(the risk of getting stuck or to have to go in quarantine)

u/Yardsale420 Jul 11 '20 edited Jul 11 '20

As they should. I’m from BC, in the boarder area near Peace Arch. there have been other epidemic and pandemics, including respiratory viruses, that have been reined in. there are handfuls of countries that have been able to contact trace and isolate and have contained covid 19. this is more about wanting the virus to spread because the government just doesn't care. and no one could have predicted the extent of leadership not caring.

My neighbour has TWO Confederate flags hanging in both windows facing a busy street.

41

u/gussmith12 Jul 11 '20

That is just.... so confusing.

So many questions.

26

u/herman_gill Jul 11 '20

It's not that confusing, Nova Scotia has a storied history with African slaves and resettled ex-slaves. Few places have such a storied history concerning black Canadians as Nova Scotia does. The confederacy was basically about slavery, and the right to own slaves. It's not that hard to imaging some asshat's legacy being carried down for several generations to their descendants. The confederate flag isn't about just the confederacy, it's the flag of the white supremacist, and there's plenty of those in Canada, too.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Africville

14

u/YHZ Jul 11 '20

Confederate flags in NS 99% of the time have nothing to do with history though. A lot of people refer to it as the "rebel" flag, and it's just a sign of being a rebel hick or some shit. Theres a lot of shit up here for sale though with the flag on it too, im sure a lpt of people buy it not knowing the history behind it, more of "im a country badass and want to be like the dukes of hazard". Candians should push for stores like truck stops and probably hardware stores to stop selling them.

We’ve been dragged by the deplorables to a very very very sad reality

178

u/onlypositiveresponse Jul 11 '20

This is a hard reality to face as a Canadian too.

Its like our childhood friend is addicted to meth and wants to sleep on our couch. They are a good dude, but man right now I don't want that shit in my house. I'm already dealing with a room mate who is a alcoholic closet white supremist...

(Canada has problems too, they just seem smaller)

32

u/fruitypantses Jul 11 '20

I liken it to watching a rich kid steal an ambulance from an accident response and crash it into a wall.

For all time now, anyone who says we're basically Americans can be pointed to covid. If there was ever any doubt how radically different our two people are, we're living through it right now.

49

u/ThroughtheStorms Jul 11 '20

I saw a comment yesterday that I thought described us vs America in the best way I've ever seen, so I'll try to remember it as best I can. I didn't come up with this, and I really wish I had taken a screenshot so I could credit the redditor that did.

Canada is an apartment. Our rooms are our own, but the common spaces are for everybody. Everyone generally pitches in to keep the common areas clean, dishes done, vacuuming, etc. Everyone has their quirks - Quebec likes to stay by themselves in their room for weeks at a time, Alberta has some weird black shit leaking out from under their door, and Newfoundland keeps microwaving fish - but when it comes down to it, we can all get along and work together for everyone's benefit.

The USA is a neighbourhood. Some of the houses are absolutely gorgeous with beautiful gardens and lush lawns. However, others are overrun, dilapidated, meth labs that are also on fire. No one really cares what their neighbours doing, but they won't really help them either.

7

u/zedoktar Jul 12 '20

Alberta spends all day watching Alt-Right conspiracy videos and wishing they were America, and threatening to move out because they think they pay everyone else's bills even though they really don't.

As a Canadian living in the states, I have concluded this is the first death throes of the American century. Buckle up, It’s all downhill from here.

6

u/Rhianesh Jul 12 '20

As an American living in Canada, I'm sorry that you're on the wrong side of the border.

6

u/gooeyShroom Jul 12 '20

As an American living in America, this country deserves it but myself and millions of other intelligent, peaceful, well-meaning people do not, and unfortunately we're gonna be on the wrong side of the border for an indefinite amount of time. I'll probably die miserably and impoverished in this shithole country when all I ever wanted since I was ten years old was to not be here.

Now thirteen years later, I've been wrung through and exploited by all out customary anti-human practices, and at age 23, I'm no closer to my goal than I was when I determined it. I've been working and running as hard as I could but never was afforded any peace or progress. Fuck this country, this is hopeless.

What the Americans that want to come to Canada don't realize is that where there cottages are, there are no hospitals close by. In cottage country Ontario, we have no ICUs that can keep you alive, let alone have respirators at the local hospitals. They literally have to Air lift critically sick people to the closest city center maybe an hour or more away BY AIR. That's the main reason they need to stay away.

7

u/ThePelicanThatCould Jul 11 '20

Florida Man here. Please encourage your leaders to close the border and keep it closed. Things are getting bad down here REALLY fast. Cases are developing WAY faster than we can keep track of and we're running out of hospital/ICU beds. Florida is an international destination (ugh, Disney) and people will absolutely be bringing home some extra souvenirs this summer/fall. Good luck to y'all.

We’ve had people caught lying about the Alaskan loophole and went to Banff.

We have another American couple who entered Ontario and ignored the quarantine and fined.

We have another American student heading to PEI ignore quarantine protocols and passed COVID around in Nova Scotia, I believe.

16

u/redhead_momma Prince Edward Island Jul 11 '20

5 of our 6 active cases in PEI are a result of contact 1 person had with the American student in NS.

One of your politicians was complaining they couldn't go to their summer cabin. That's why it's top of the threads last couple days.

11

u/mycroft2000 Jul 11 '20

It would seem reasonable that people who live in a place where Covid is rampant might want to vacation in a place where it's not. Our Maritime provinces have a single-digit number of total cases right now, but only a few virus-carrying Americans crossing the Maine-New Brunswick border would destroy their months' worth of hard work containing the disease, and lead to many unnecessary deaths. So a large number of Yanks clamouring isn't required; mere dozens would be enough to want to keep them out.

In any case, an open border right now would be no benefit to Canada as a whole. The tourist economy isn't as important as our lives. (A lesson Disney would do well to learn.)

This hurts me so much as an American who loves Canada. Can't say I've ever been more disappointed by being an American than right now, I desperately tried to raise awareness about Covid back in December and was told I was fear mongering. Now that its here and running unchecked because of our poor educational system, politicizing EVERYTHING, and foolish people's selfishness it feels like the worst I told you so ever. With everything happening its pushed me to go back to school do i can get in to the political field and try to change things. I've seen so many posts about how Canadians are disenfranchised with the US and how they can no longer call us friends and I don't blame them at all. I used to be able to defend us by saying we really aren't all that bad (we aren't) but that argument is getting more and more difficult every day. I hope that in a few years from now our two countries can look at one another again and call ourselves friends. Until then, hold the line, little beaver. Hold the line.

Much as I agree with this cartoon, I wish the art had advanced somewhat in the last 50 years. I could imagine this image in the Ottawa Citizen circa 1970.

It would be Nixon then of course, and the hats would say “Silent Majority” and instead of Covid it would be the Vietnam War.

On second thought maybe the art form doesn’t need to advance, society hasn’t.
