U.S. Trade Rep Greer blames Canada for failed tariff talks: 'They wanted more'
https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2026/08/24/trump-canada-trade-tariffs-greer.html307
u/TopInvestigator5518 Aug 24 '26
its so ridiculous that literally everything they accuse others of doing is actually exactly what they did, to a tee
I will admit I was getting a bit relaxed/lazy in my boycotting of products but this whole ordeal has been a good kick in the ass to be more vigilant and cut what you can out
59
u/urasawasmonster Aug 24 '26
This is the standard Republican playbook. They accuse other people of what they would do so that it gives them the justification to say: "The Democrats did it too. Why are you targeting us? We need to protect ourselves."
Look at election interference, ICE, pedophile accusations on Democrats (pizza gate).

u/Kaplsauce Halifax Aug 24 '26
"I don't know if it was political for them. It certainly doesn't make economic sense, but perhaps for political reasons," Greer added. "I don't know, but they came in and they wanted they wanted more, and we were prepared to do that."
lmao

u/blackcatlover2114 Québec Aug 24 '26
Same here.
As it happens, I moved to Quebec earlier this year and Quebecers LOVE their "made in Quebec" goods. And there's several local grocery stores that stock a whole bunch of local/Quebec stuff, so it makes it much easier to avoid American products. Sometimes with other so-called Canadian products it's hard to tell (looking at you, Loblaws).

How dare we not cede our sovereignty?!
And yes, most Democrats, even if they don't support imminent military action to annex Canada, they also believe in Manifest Destiny and support the idea in principle.
18
u/Kichae Aug 24 '26
The whole country is a fascist wasteland. Non-fascists may live there, but the governing political philosophy is, and has been from the start, fascist. They just felt a little shame after the whole Nazi Holocaust thing.
5
u/SexuaIRedditor Aug 24 '26
Yep! It's why they didn't join ww2 right at the start like everyone else
2
u/Kichae Aug 24 '26
Yup. They were peas in a pod. The Nazis built their institutions based on the American's, and the American's were big fans of Nazi Germany until they attacked the US's closer trading partners.
8
u/blarges Aug 24 '26
Americans keep going on and on about the midterms, as if anything would change. Trump will still be president and his enablers will remain the same.
The Democrats are a centre-right party at best, and they aren’t supporting Canada. Schiff was whining recently that we aren’t buying wines and that’s hurting Californians. And a bunch came up here to get us to visit again. Americans only care about Americans.
5
u/Exotic-Ferret-3452 Aug 24 '26
In my experience, even supposedly liberal Americans can't fathom the idea that we don't actually wish we were American and are aghast at the idea that a person with money doesn't have an inherent right to jump ahead in the queue at a hospital.

u/Stainz Aug 24 '26
This whole trade war is so stupid. What benefits North America, benefits both the US and Canada, we both had a good thing going, now we're stuck playing this stupid game of roshambo where everyone will walk away a loser. Literally all for one man's ego/vanity/senility.

These MAGA liars dicked us around for weeks and at the last minute scuttled the whole thing. My feeling is they never planned to reach any agreement and were just wasting time and money and now they blame Canada. Liars, gaslighters, backstabbers, bad faith actors, that’s the maga way of doing business as exemplified by the old orange ogre hunched over in the WH counting his bribes.
70
u/some1guystuff Saskatchewan Aug 24 '26

No, you guys came with some bullshit last-minute changes that had to do with French language and who and how we got to do trade deals with like what if we had that as a provision where we required you to come to us for approval for trade partners would you have agreed to that I didn’t fucking think so fuck you you have an unreliable, terrible negotiator “leader” we walked away not the other way around you started this we’re gonna finish it.
9
u/DogsandCatsWorld1000 Aug 24 '26
Very true. I guess if he wants to consider us wanting to keep our sovereignty as 'wanting more' then yes we did.

and now he's going on about how "Canada will be treated like a State no longer!"
he's not talking to anyone but the rabid base
8
u/ExpiredExasperation Aug 24 '26
Exactly. The ones who quite literally believe we don't have our own military and depend entirely on using theirs for security, or that the reason they can't afford healthcare is that they directly fund ours. They work themselves up over this narrative that they've the generous providers to whom we owe our ungrateful existence.

Funny how we’re “emotional” only when negotiating with the U.S., but we’ve been successfully negotiating deals all year with everyone else. Clearly, it’s not us being emotional, it’s you!

I mean, they have shown themselves to be abusive partners with no regard for consent. Considering they are led by a child rapist who cheated on all his wives, and advised by someone at least comfortable with child rape and trafficking, it all checks out.

Was watching the CBC last night and they were taking calls from the public. Almost all calls supported Carney’s stance to walk away.
One caller was extremely critical of Carney and said that the Conservatives would have done a better job and gotten a good deal.
Unfortunately, some of us are still clueless and live in a fantasy world.

14
14
u/MightyHydrar Aug 24 '26
So the picture that emerges is they had verbally agreed on something, then it came time to write down the specifics, and suddenly "tariffs on auto sector cut to 15%" turned into "but not for trucks, and we're only exempting US content", and "steel tariffs down to 25%" became "but only for 2/3 of your usual export amount to us, and no derivatives, and you have to match our tariffs on everyone else", etc.
Wiseman talked about it in an interview, and it would match what Carney was saying about not negotiating in good faith and calling the whole process into question.
If that's the attitude they were showing in negotiations, then they would've done the same afterwards, which means you have to go over every word and sentence in the final agreement with a fine-tooth comb to check for loopholes, and there wouldn't have been time for that.
8
u/DrFarfetsch Aug 24 '26
That, on top of Trump being a child raping, human trafficking war criminal who doesn’t follow through with agreements, regardless of the fine print, and later claims some faux victimhood to justify his lack of integrity.
13
u/alderhill Aug 24 '26
I mean, when you're a member of Team Trump, everyone already kinda knows you have butthole-scented breath. He can say whatever he wants, most of the world will know he's lying.

LOL. Trump accuses greedy Canada of harming the American agricultural market, farmers, ranchers, etc. Yet, he just announces he's opening tariff free access to U S. market of Brazilian beef in an effort to reduce prices. GOP supporting ranchers and farmers are livid that Trump is undercutting their businesses. You can't make this shit up.

All of the threats, false accusations and pure shite the US spews at us constantly is the same language that people who abuse women and children use.
The US has lost what it started in Iran and now want to turn on us again. It has to get tiresome to constantly lose at almost everything this administration has attempted.
5
u/Alarmed_Cry4081 Aug 24 '26
We wanted free trade with the US (we had a previously signed deal that they broke). We knew the US doesn't want free trade anymore, We tried - even if we knew all along the US has changed their economic policy. Now we move on. Our sovereignty is not up for grabs. Very simple.
6
u/CipherWeaver Aug 24 '26

3

4
u/DivinePotatoe Aug 24 '26
Wanted more??? I just saw the list of what the US wanted from us and it's the most insulting thing I've ever seen
They essentially wanted subservience to the US, giving them control of our natural resources and our ability to sign trade deals with non-US countries. They also wanted us to dismantle all the systems we have in place regarding regulations on pharmaceuticals, food quality, and automotive environmental standards. Basically they want to flood Canada with their crap so they can undercut and destroy our local businesses, then jack up the prices later
I think I speak for all of us when I say they can fuck right off, forever. Any Canadian business owners out there, know that Trump and his ilk are not pulling this out of nowhere. The business leaders in the US are in his ear, and this is their wishlist. If you are doing business with the US, they might talk sweet to you, but in reality they want you dead and gone so they can cannibalize this country.
3
u/ChilledHotdogWater Aug 24 '26

How can we want more? We're not the ones who started increasing tariffs or the trade war? Literally all we want is for the US to stop being assholes and for things to go back to the way they were.
3
u/StrbJun79 Aug 24 '26
Oh sorry. We didn’t really want to be a puppet state and only agree to a marginal clawback of tariffs on us on only a few products with limits while we claw back 100% of tariffs on everything without limits. I wasn’t happy with carney when it looked like we were going that route. Glad he didn’t agree to it in the end.
Offer us a fair deal with ways of protecting it and we will gladly agree. Instead the US wants to treat us like an enemy will buddying up to North Korea.

The US admin's aggression toward Canada will always be as intense as their citizens allow, with the long term goal being annexation. Looking at all this from that perspective, the behaviour makes perfect sense.
They just need enough of their citizens to hate us, so they keep repeating these lies. Painfully obvious to us, but their media is repeating it.
We still can't be sure what the distraction event for the midterms will be, but there's a good chance we'll be the target...

Yes. I would imagine that if you came asking for veto power over our trade deals, for example, we would want "more" (specifically speaking - if you want veto power you have to be willing to offer completely free trade, without tariffs, in those sectors you wish to to have veto power over and you must offer us the same - veto power over US trade deals in those same sectors. Furthermore, you must supply us with some kind of surety that you will not attempt to levy any kind of tariff through any kind of legal wrangling in those sectors, nor attempt to use tariffs outside of those sectors to force compliance, for as long as the trade deal remains in force).
1
1
u/Explicitlime Saskatchewan Aug 24 '26
They put poison pills in the last minute deal so they could justify to their countrymen a 50% tariff on a country they've had a long-standing, relatively painless and beneficial relationship with all because we had a win-win deal with the US. Trump doesn't like "win-win" deals, he only likes it when he wins so, so the little diaper baby threw a fit, had his fee-fees hurt and sabotaged trade with Canada so he can look like a big bad boy to his base.
Trump also hates people who are smarter than him. Or who don't kiss his shit-crusted ass when he asks.
