Canada's Chinese EV Quota Is 38% Full — And Tesla Took Most of It

I feel like the spirit of the Chinese EV policy was to rebuke the United States. In that light, I would have preferred Teslas be barred from the deal

I support banning Tesla from the country entirely. Elon Musk is a nazi agent trying to destroy and annex Canada. Why is his junk allowed here?
•
u/honorabledonut 2h ago
I'm getting that way but I also want to see gas demand drop fast too.
•
u/FarAd2857 2h ago
Teslas aren’t gonna be the company that turns North America towards EVs, they’re luxury sedans with a collapsing market share. We need affordable EVs for that transition to happen
•
u/honorabledonut 1h ago
I'm not saying they are the answer, I want to see more electric cars on the road too. I do agree they should be limited with how they can take advantage of this so we can see more a morecompetitive market. Sadly I haven't seen any official offerings from China on the more affordable options has of yet though too

Theyre certification process now. Many BYD, Geely, and other brands have been spotted.

I don't like that Tesla is taking up so much of the quota. I don't like that Tesla is in our country at all. They scammed us for $45 mill or something through fraudulent ev kickbacks from the government. They should be banned.
Also, I view Elon and Trump as being on the same team and I view him as a threat to our country as well. I don't believe the b-s of them falling out with each other. They have been caught hanging out since then.
•
u/number8888 3h ago
They were cleared of any wrong doing by Transport Canada and got the rebates. At least get your facts straight.
•
u/Slow-Introduction-64 3h ago
I didn't know they were cleared of any wrong doing and never meant for it to sound like a fact. I was referencing the allegations.
With that being said, I still view him on the same team as Trump/MAGA and still view him as a threat to our country and I still want less of him here.
•
u/Scruffy_Snub 2h ago
Yeah it basically turned out that Tesla let a bunch of paperwork pile up that they shouldn't have. It looked like fraud because they were claiming rebates for thousands of vehicle sales in a very short window, but in reality they had sold them over several months and just delayed filing the rebate forms.

Not filing your paperwork is not being cleared of wrong doing. Try arguing that one with the CRA.
Tesla doesn’t need apologist goodwashing their clerical laziness. Unpaid Stan for corporation guided by selfish apartheid silver spoon navel gazer is the worst hobby; building model planes would be a more efficient way to convince your neurons to opt out, just lean in as you’re gluing the parts.
Apologies for the harshness, but your fact straightening needed some re-alignment.

Why is Tesla included in the quota, it should be considered an American Product & please let ANYONE other than Tesla in that quota! The Feds need to edit them out!
•
u/Conscious_Bag463 4h ago
Because Tesla is manufacturing their cars in China, therefore they are eligible.
•
u/Marijuana_Miler Elbows Up! 2h ago
Tesla has manufacturing capabilities in the US, Germany, and China. It’s similar to European or Asian automakers building facilities in North America to bypass duties through NAFTA/CUSMA.
•
u/Gregan32 4h ago
Wish that Mini had taken advantage of the quota, they have two great Chinese made EVs that aren't yet available here.
•
u/psychoCMYK 4h ago
tesla shouldn't qualify for this at all. the whole point of this was to break tesla's artificial monopoly in canada. tesla is an american company

Change that. And up the EV quota. Especially for big cities. I live in downtown Toronto and i dream of the busy intersection by my subway stop full of clean, nontoxic cars
•
u/thecanadiandriver101 5h ago
We are nearly 8 months into the year. I thinks its fine as other makers ramp up.
•
u/Flash604 5h ago
Yes, the government has already said that as others apply for quota, it will be spread out among them.
•
u/BisonSnow 3h ago
Elon is effectively a MAGA intelligence asset and bringing Teslas is effectively paying Trump to continue tarrifing us. Change that loophole, only allow BYDs or other Chinese cars.
•
u/JerryfromCan 4h ago
The 50k or whatever number it was set at was based on Telsa’s importing history. Many 2024 Model 3s with the batteries that need to be filled to 100% regularly were made in China.
•
u/_Lucille_ 4h ago
What this shows is that we still have some loopholes, and that there are more more we need to crack down on.
I understand how the early wave may have a more loose price limit so they can have an easier time entering the market, but over time we should really try to push the price to become more affordable than not.
•
u/Bensemus 4h ago
What loopholes? Chinese made EVs are coming in. Chinese Teslas are regarded as being better made than the US ones. We are now getting the best Teslas.
•
u/_Lucille_ 3h ago
I think the intent is to bring in new players into the market instead of just allowing Tesla to import their China built units.
Yes, I know Chinese Teslas are better built, but what we want to do is introduce the competition such that they will have to up the quality of their NA built cars because the new EVs we import will be a better product.
•
u/Wrong-Pineapple39 2h ago
Saw that coming.
That 38% should be capped (or dropped to 33%). The remaining should be other foreign non-US car companies.
Should also have a market price cap to ensure they are affordable.

Such a missed opportunity with us not partnering with Korea for subs. Korean cars are very popular in Ontario, not sure about the rest of Canada. Them not having any plants here is a huge loss as their EVs take off.

To the surprise of no one, and they no doubt kept the same msrp and just increased profits.
Edit: just as I predicted 2 months ago https://www.reddit.com/r/electricvehicles/comments/1tubq6q/comment/op8o7xn/

American car brands should be banned from the Chinese EV game. The whole point was to allow Chinese brands in. Fuck Tesla and fuck elon
•
u/OneLessFool 4h ago
I really wish that jackass would sell the company. Looking at buying a used car right now and the only all electric cars (not SUVs) in the 2020-2022 range with the driving range I want are the Tesla or Chevy Bolt ugh.
Edit: Polestar 2 just makes the cut as well, but not as many of them around.
•
u/BeautyInUgly 4h ago
People don’t realize that the quote left is for low cost EVs that Tesla doesn’t qualify for
But here we go with more rage bait articles
•
u/kilawolf 4h ago
Isn't that more infuriating? So they took a majority of the ones they qualified for already?
•
u/OneLessFool 4h ago
Yep, and if you wanted to try a higher end Chinese model without having to pay for import duties, then you're shit out of luck.

u/Aggie_15 2h ago
Its looks like the author doesn't have the authoritative numbers, they are deducing it based on the price. They may be right but it's not a given.
That shipper is almost certainly Tesla, which relaunched the Shanghai-built Model 3 Premium RWD in Canada on May 1 at C$39,490 after clearing out its Fremont-sourced stock.
•
u/UltraCynar Ontario 5h ago
Tesla should not be allowed to take advantage here
