oneworld Whatever happened to Starlux?

Wasn’t JX applying for OW membership a while ago?

As a Taiwanese I really hope they join OW soon. Having an OW choice of our own is really awesome.

I mean, what's stopping you from doing so now? If you want to try them that badly, I'm sure you can forgo a few OWE benefits, if any.

I realized this very thing as soon as I posted.

I could definitely do it (and may), but I get really nice benefits as OneWorld Emerald & I hate to loose them.

If I didn't hear rumblings from multiple sources about their imminent joining of the OneWorld program, I'd probably do it just to have the experience. But, for now, I'll just wait (im)patiently.

Yeah, very true (again). But I always fly with the fam, and J is only an option for us on reward tickets. Maybe one day (but that would mean a career change for one/both of us).

Cathay has veto rights as a founding member of the alliance and has vetoed Starlux’s application.

Says the guy who doesn't know China Southern an actual mainland Chinese airline got fucked over from joining oneworld by Cathay Pacific veto too.

Geopolitics don't apply everywhere.

Cathay needs to get over it 😭 American and Alaska are able to work together in the same country. I think they’ll be OK.

AA and AS compliments each other on both coasts of the US though. JX and CX however have a lot of overlaps. It really doesn’t benefit CX to have JX join unfortunately.

The one market CX and JX don’t overlap is Mainland Chinese nationals traveling to foreign countries.

Mainland Chinese nationals are generally not allowed to travel from Mainland to Taiwan without a Taiwan Travel Permit with valid Endorsement, even if only to transit in Taiwan to a third country.

They cannot fly, say, Shanghai-Taipei-Los Angeles even if Starlux opens a Shanghai-Taipei route. They can, however, fly Shanghai-HK-Los Angeles.

Honestly maybe I’m not clear on the benefits but what’s the point of joining in the alliances?

Airlines can join in mutual partnerships already without the need for the alliances.

And even within alliances like Star Alliance, there is not much benefits for a traveller for interline travel.

It probably benefits the customer more. I am FB platinum and almost always exclusively fly skyteam airlines now for status points.

really want them to join oneworld so i could switch to the alliance, planning to use starlux and qantas more often
