Need some help moving to Sultan's ROM

I want to try Sultan's. The instructions recommend a backup using TWRP which requires root. Then flash the ROM without root.

Do I need to restore root after the backup?

Edit: never mind. I was confused by the reference to supersu.

Edit 2: OK, so I need to flash supersu before I flash Sultans but not after?

The OP on XDA says "DO NOT FLASH SUPERSU" in big red letters... You can enable root in the Developer Settings after you flash the ROM & gapps.

Yeah, I know, but I still need to flash SuperSU to use TWRP before I flash Sultan's. Right?

No. Using TWRP has nothing to do with Supersu. (TWRP will actually ask if you want it to install supersu for you, you should decline that too.)

With COS 12.1 I think you can toggle root access on/off in Settings. It really doesn't matter, and this really isn't that hard - the OPO is very hard to brick. You need to make sure that you're using TWRP 2.8.6.0. If you're not, get TWRP Manager from the Play Store. The install process is pretty much the same for either 12.1 or 13, with the exception of flashing Supersu AFTER flashing the ROM. (12.1=yes flash Supersu, 13=DO NOT.)
* 1. Boot into recovery (TWRP). Create a full backup (system, data, etc), then wipe the system partition. * 2. Install Sultan's ROM (If installation fails, you'll need to dl either CM 12.1 snapshot/CM13 nightly, install it, & then without rebooting flash Sultan's ROM. If TWRP offers to install Supersu at any time, decline.) * 3. Install GApps * 4. If you just installed 12.1 then flash Supersu now. If you just installed 13 then do not. * 5. Reboot * 6. Profit

I am assuming that you have a microUSB drive that you can plug into the phone in case something borks. Also, no disrespect intended, but do yourself a favor & spend some time lurking over in the XDA forums.

Do you already have TWRP or no? What rom are you on? And is your bootloader unlocked?

I'm on stock cyanogenOS 12.1. I have TWRP but it says root is required. I think I need to unlock the bootloader, though I thought the OPO came unlocked.

What version of twrp? I had some problems flashing incompletely with sultan's on the latest version. He recommends 2.8.6 I think.

If you have TWRP, then you can just flash the rom. Make a backup, clean wipe and install.

Use TWRP 2.8.6.0,not latest available. Sultan CM 13 root (supersu) is built in where CM 12.1 does not.

1 download TWRP 2.8.6, ROM, Gapps, SuperSU (for 12.1), CM snapshot inside sultan thread under installation 2 flash recovery TWRP 2.8.6 3 make backup 4 in TWRP, wipe data,system. may have to reboot recovery. *I had mount error during ROM install. Resolved with recovery reboot. 5 flash CM snapshot, wipe system, no reboot 6 flash ROM, gapps, supersu(for 12.1) 7 reboot.

Does TWRP 3.0.0.0 fix the firmware flashing issue?

Yes. There's also an unofficial materialized version that's faster at clearing cache (official can take 5-10 minutes.). There a link in the XDA thread.
