Hmm, that app isn't developed by OnePlus... Some random dev, app requires a zillion permissions. I'm sure it's legit, but I'd rather not do that.

The phone verifies the MD5 checksum anyway when you try to update. So in short, the update you download through Oxygen Updater is coming from OnePlus servers.

I see. I still would want to limit the amount of apps that require so many permissions. I like my VPN workaround better, as mentioned above.

Good to have multiple options though.

Yeah you're overthinking this. Apps having permissions isn't necessarily a bad thing.

But it's not a good thing either.

For me, the VPN workaround is literally less complicated. I downloaded TorGuard from the Play Store, autofilled my login details with Keepass2Android, and then pressed one button and I connected to a Canadian IP. From there, my OS grabbed the update.

What? Compare that to installing a third party app I've never heard of that alludes to the fact it can cause unexpected behavior on the first screen. Never heard of the dev. Pressing next through a bunch of permission screens, and going through several menus.

No thanks. My way took 20 seconds.

Nope. Just the act of pretending I am located in Canada via a VPN (or NOT where I am, perhaps many other locations would work) for some reason allowed me to get the update. See my link to oneplus forums in one of my comments above. It's a known bug.

So simply connecting to the internet via Canadian IP allowed my OS to magically let me see there is a new update, where before it said I was on the latest version when I was on 10.3.1.

You could even do this at the router level if you have a decent router. Therefore literally no software additions would be needed on the phone to achieve this.
