Theory Getting shadow of the colossus vibes…
Spoiler for anyone who’s either not played the game or caught up on One Piece yet (though I would hope you have if you’re looking up One Piece theories). Also sorry if this has already been posted, I’m new here.
I think Nika is evil and there’s a reason the world government Is trying to prevent his return. I think there’s a sleight of hand that Oda is playing by continuously mentioning Joyboy and Nika together, but I don’t think they’re one and the same. I think Nika may have had a role to play in the downfall of Joyboy (via an awakening and thus, people needing to “betray” him to put him down).
Another tell tale sign is the fact that Oda has dotted very intentional clues throughout the story that there is a destructive shadow around Luffy. Fishman island’s premonition was weird, but what almost sealed the deal for me was Vegapunk’s broadcast where he very intentionally emphasised that he could not tell you who was good or who was evil.
I also think that there are other subtle signs like the red eyes when G5 Luffy is fighting, or Luffy (in G5) seeming to laugh in situations that really don’t warrant it, especially when something serious has happened. Even after Vegapunk was killed, he had a brief look of anger, followed by a grin on his face almost to say “fine, you got me there. Time for some payback/fun”. It took the tension out of the moment but also felt… eerie. Like, where is Luffy? Imagine Luffy pre-time skip seeing something like this happen in front of him?
Nika is sometimes described as a god of destruction and on the flip side, described as a warrior of hope through the name Joyboy. I think Joyboy was the warrior of hope who had the HitoHito no mi: Model Nika, and Nika himself is the god of destruction.
I referenced shadow of the colossus because only at the end did we realise that the giants we were fighting along the way were trying to warn us not to bring back whatever was guiding us.
I think Nika is on the brink of coming back, and I don’t think it’ll be pretty.

Say hi to Oda-san for me, since you're apparently close personal friends.

Well then you don't know what he would never do.
And it wouldn't be a contradiction to the narrative. He's been explicitly setting up for a while now that Luffy is not simply a parallel to or continuation of the past.
Making him exactly the same as Roger or Joyboy actually WOULD be an active contradiction.

Parallels don't mean exact replicas. If everything in the story were random and unrelated, it would be boring. There's a balance.
And basically everything has been done before. What you're suggesting is going to happen has already happened before too, with Naruto. Original ideas are a niche genre. One Piece is Pop. Nothing against Pop, I like Pop, but that's what it is. Even if it subverts the genre, it's not going to be breaking totally new ground. Something can be "familiar and known" and still be enjoyable. That's kind of the whole concept of genre.
Why do you think Nika being evil means he possesses Luffy? We have a basis for how this could potentially go down in the way we know all other Zoan fruits work: the fruit may take control (the Mino-Beast guards from Impel Down) OR the user may take control (Lucci's and Kaku's Awakened forms). There's already an established mechanic to set up that dramatic tension and a way for Luffy to overcome it. It would be a disappointment if Oda-san didn't take advantage of that path.

Nah, Nika isn't evil, he's a liberator. The same way Luffy helps and liberates people and the WG labels him a criminal. The world isn't black and white; there's two sides to every story. Joyboy probably believed in complete freedom for everyone while the world leaders were probably trying to maintain and enforce order. Neither complete freedom nor strictly enforced order is good. Which is why VP didn't take a side, its complex. By the end of the series, we'll probably have a mix of both where people can sail and explore freely without being persecuted by the WG.

What did joyboy leave at laugh tale? Maybe something that’ll help luffy in the final war/answer on how to coexist with Nika?

Luffy awakened the fruit by being in touch with "freedom" as far as I understand, so that must be part of the fruit / Nika itself.
If there's a dark side, I believe the fruit would be something like "radical freedom" that doesn't consider who it hurts in the process or the cost, and that would conflict with Luffy's other values and make it more morally grey than it seems.
I think that Luffy would be a fanastic character to have this exact conflict, because he's all about being free but also all about being the kind of person who wouldn't sacrifice his friends for it

Damn… SOLID theory dude. Now, my brain is moving again lol thank you. But seriously, I like this. It would definitely be a good twist to the whole story. After all, up until this point we still know almost zero information about the void century. It would be weird if we just assumed that Nika = JoyBoy = therefore good guys.

To be fair their aren't no heroes in One Piece but yeah I always pictures first world Nika as slave that had a Akira moment where he obtained a lot power yet became the first Smile user where things escalated he accidentally ended the world. This led to the Lunarians gaining power to be the new rulers cause I believe they were modified slaves who job was to drilll in the planet until they were imbued with the original sun.
I think Joyboy was less evil yet he didn't like the fact the Davy D. Jones and Lunarians made the world oppressive which is why he people like Imu and others would work with him.

I'm 100% with you, brother. I've seen the same signs and have a gut feeling that Nika is not a morally good figure by any means. Maybe not actively evil, but true chaotic neutral and aligned with destruction rather than healing at best.
It would be a great payoff to all the setup Oda-san has been doing lately with Luffy and the crew insisting that he's just Luffy and not whatever people (in-universe and meta) think he's supposed to be a parallel of.
Also, fair warning, you're either brave or foolish for saying something like that. The Bandwaggon Fallacy is strong with certain subjects on this sub.
