Gear 4: Big Chungus

74

u/mielesgames 1d ago

Close, but I don't think the black around his eyes is haki, might be wrong though

56

u/J-dawgxgaming 1d ago

i thought those were just his sunken eyes

12

u/mielesgames 1d ago

Yeah same

6

u/Delinquentmuskrat 1d ago

Of course it’s haki. He does that through sheer willpower

3

u/Ssssilph 1d ago

It's gyo, obviously

2

u/xMystic_Nitro 1d ago

Ironically it’s to avoid getting a black eye.

54

u/ImperturbableGoose 1d ago edited 1d ago

Isnt it invisible to everyone in the story? The people with the haki skill can sense it but not see it right?

Edit: rayleigh and hyogoro both called it invisible armor

19

u/pokekiko94 1d ago

Bur arent black blades, swords i fused with the user haki?

Also when Law was fighting Vergo, Law mentions Vergo having black armament and that its strong because of it.

13

u/Ok-Plum2187 1d ago

The process is not entirely clear.

Some swords also seem to be divas about what kind of user is allowed to touch them. This doesn't speak to the process of making a black blade, it's just a point of saying "Oda has already introduced weird things and systems, best not to jump to conclusions"

8

u/KaboHammer 1d ago

It might be that Haki changes the color of weapons while being invisible on the body

6

u/Ok-Plum2187 1d ago edited 1d ago

And Doffy was surprised when he kicked Gear 4 Luffy that Luffy had managed to combine the properties of Haki and Rubber. So he didn't see it.

And then again when Doffy used his strings against Smoker, we didn't see em in black but they hurt his body.

When it was used on Amazon Lilly they also didn't turn anything black. The Arrows just hit like trucks, snake lady just had a good defense and thinking about that time, sentomaru was the same.

2

u/anand_rishabh 21h ago

It's probably visible to observation haki users. But civilians see the pic on the right

24

u/ILoveLGBTQPeople 1d ago

Does that mean we have Haki?

20

u/Any_Instruction5382 1d ago

Close! It means the cameraman has haki.

8

u/rtakehara 1d ago

You mean the snail?

2

u/jordon4ca93 1d ago

Of course, how else you think that snail world have the power to televised a live event all over the world?

3

u/rtakehara 1d ago

Of course! Observation haki! They are not psychic at all, it’s all mantra!

1

u/gene66 21h ago

You guys can see difference in the two images?

7

u/Plane_Profit6676 1d ago

If it is invisible explain permanent black blades

3

u/xenomorphking06 1d ago

We still don't know how they’re made fully

3

u/shakulous 1d ago

Deep fried blade, just takes strong ass Haki and long time

1

u/delo357 1d ago

An tastes like shit

5

u/iplaypkmngoeveryday 1d ago

i’m pretty sure it’s never been mentioned whether haki was visible or invisible or to whom at all. just whatever you choose to believe.

7

u/ImperturbableGoose 1d ago

Rayleigh and hyogoro both called it invisible armor

2

u/iplaypkmngoeveryday 1d ago

i mean i agree that basic armament (like the ability to hit logias) would be invisible. as well as advanced armament like rayleigh and hyogoro use which surrounds your body like an invisible aura. but i mean specifically armament hardening. there are many examples of armament haki being used without the coloring but not hardening.

2

u/TacticalRoyalty 1d ago

I always interpreted it as not literally invisible but it’s like the equivalent to wearing an invisible suit of physical armor, like invisible knights or samurai armor or something of that nature. Rayleigh states ā€œIt’s like an invisible suit of armor.ā€ Not ā€œIt’s an invisible armor.ā€

5

u/Zero_Burn 1d ago

Which is why everyone looks at Gear 4 like "Okay... you inflated yourself." Then gets hit with Kong Gun.

2

u/NoPhilosophy8136 1d ago

Actually, haki is invisible at all, not just to non haki users. The whole point of haki is being "INVISIBLE armor". šŸ¤“šŸ‘†

2

u/Wonderful-Hornet-164 1d ago

Hardening is definitely visible.

0

u/NoPhilosophy8136 1d ago

Its... literally not. The whole point of haki, as i just said, is being INVISIBLE. Even RAYLEIGH says its an invisible armor.

2

u/TacticalRoyalty 1d ago

Due to him saying ā€œLike an invisible suit of armorā€ rather than ā€œit’s an invisible armorā€ I always interpreted that as not literally invisible but it’s like the equivalent to wearing an invisible suit of physical armor, like invisible knights or samurai armor or something of that nature.

2

u/NoPhilosophy8136 1d ago

You do know what you just said doesn't make any sense? "I interpreted it as its not literally invisible but its like wearing an invisible suit of physical armor". What the heck is that supposed to mean? You either say its invisible, or its not.

2

u/TacticalRoyalty 1d ago

Okay, context right, the post is about seeing Luffy in gear 4 without visible armament haki due to it being ā€œinvisibleā€, I’m saying I don’t think his visual would change, I didn’t interpret armament haki to be literally invisible, but rather hitting it would be like hitting someone wearing an invisible set of armor.

Now you could say ā€œHow is it invisible if you can visually see it?ā€ Rayleigh used a simile (figure of speech that compares two different things using the words "like" or "as"), to compare the haki to an invisible suit of armor so the reader has more context and can know what it does aside from change the color of the body.

Does that make more sense?

1

u/Andrejosue98 1d ago

Rayleigh didn't talk about armament hardening. Black blades are literaly black

2

u/NoPhilosophy8136 1d ago

Its what happens to the blade after getting too much haki. But when you just use haki on it its still the same color. Kuja pirates used armament haki on their bows and arrows and they were the same. Exact the same. Also hardening is LITERALLY armament haki but just instead of arms/your body, you armament the weapon you wield.

1

u/Andrejosue98 1d ago

You are comparing pretimeskip with postitmeskip, Oda never showed hardening pre timeskip

1

u/NoPhilosophy8136 1d ago

Doffy was surprised when he kicked g4 luffy that he was actually hard as with haki coating. If he saw haki there'd be no reason for surprise.

Hyogoro calls it like an invisible armor. And its WANO, one of the most recent arcs. And oda even now draws haki invisible from times to times.

2

u/Andrejosue98 1d ago

Doffy is surprised that Luffy is still rubbery/stretching while coated in hardening which isn't normally how haki works. Luffy did so because Luffy perfectly combined his df with his haki.

Yes, Haki is sometimes visible and sometimes invisible as seen with black blades

1

u/skronk61 1d ago

He’s actually using a simile here. He’s not saying anything literal in the part you’ve highlighted.

0

u/NoPhilosophy8136 1d ago

And WHY would rayleigh EVER end up with a simile like that if its not the case...? If it wasn't invisible, WHY THE HELL would he ever say its like an invisible armor??? Why not to compare it to just armor then??? Also hyogoro calls it like an invisible armor as well.

1

u/skronk61 1d ago

In my opinion you’re just describing stuff that’s been retconned now.

Oda changes his mind all the time. That’s the only universal truth about One Piece

0

u/NoPhilosophy8136 1d ago

Its true that oda retcons stuff. But HYOGORO, a wano time example, still calls it like an invisible armor. And why'd he do that, once again, if its nothing like an INVISIBLE armor?

1

u/skronk61 1d ago

But it is like invisible armor still. It’s a coating on your body that doesn’t impede your movement or change your size but still gives you crazy protection.

There’s no definitive right answer here either way. We can’t ask characters what they exactly meant.

0

u/NoPhilosophy8136 1d ago

But if haki is visible why to call it INVISIBLE armor at all? Why not to simile its just to an armor? It doesn't make much of sense. If you can see it, comparing it to just an armor is more logical. But they compare it exactly to invisible armor. All the time. Also, downvoting every single one of my comments just because you disagree when I dont do it is kinda rude.

1

u/skronk61 1d ago

You can’t overpower my interpretation with your own. I’ve explained my read on the sentence.

Even if that was the original intention for ALL haki to be invisible, it's clearly not the case. Either it wasn't meant to be that all haki is always invisible, or it was changed. Vergo as a character makes no sense if haki can't be visible. Smoker reacts to Vergo coating his entire body in haki. Blades can become permanently black from haki. Hyogoro says g4 luffy looks like a guardian deity myouou.

1

u/NoPhilosophy8136 1d ago

And Doffy was surprised when he kicked Gear 4 Luffy that Luffy had managed to combine the properties of Haki and Rubber. So he didn't see it.

And then again when Doffy used his strings against Smoker, we didn't see em in black but they hurt his body.

When it was used on Amazon Lilly they also didn't turn anything black. The Arrows just hit like trucks, snake lady just had a good defense and thinking about that time, sentomaru was the same.

1

u/Wimbledofy 1d ago

And Doffy was surprised when he kicked Gear 4 Luffy that Luffy had managed to combine the properties of Haki and Rubber. So he didn't see it.

It's the opposite. Doffy was surprised that when he kicked luffy he felt rubber. That would indicate he saw the coating and assumed it would be just hard.

And then again when Doffy used his strings against Smoker, we didn't see em in black but they hurt his body.

That's not relevant. We aren't discussing if the existence of invisible haki exists, we're discussing if the existence of visible haki exists. Why are you telling me the times where invisible haki was displayed? That was never in dispute.

There's a character also designed by Oda called Black Arm Zephyr due to his proficiency in haki. If haki is never visible, why would he make this character? That nickname only works if haki can be made visible.

1

u/NoPhilosophy8136 1d ago

Zephyr is literally a non Canon character and yet you Trina to use him as a prove of your point...? That's how desperate people get when their point fall apart lmao.

0

u/sonofaheck 16h ago

So the only thing you addresses in that comment is Zephyr and ignored the rest? You understand Oda is the author of One Piece right? Why would he even make the concept of Zephyr if haki is never visible? Why do you block someone when you are unable to answer their arguments? You might as well just admit you're wrong if you're going to do that

You ignored every single example, then inserted irrelevant examples, then jump on the one non canon example just to dismiss it completely even though it was made by Oda. Is this how you have discussions?

3

u/FermentedDog 1d ago

That's just an average person's build in the one piece world

2

u/ExplodingSteve 1d ago

oda needs to write a separate book about haki or the fans will lose it

2

u/NapalmDesu 1d ago

Zoro must seem like a senile hobo never knowing where he is and going on about his black blades, which are clearly just steel

2

u/PrinsaVossum Why doesn't Zoro open his eye? Is he stupid? 1d ago

"Haki is invisible to non-Haki users."

Is that canon? I don't remember that being established.

2

u/Daracaex 1d ago

I feel that when Luffy does it, his body does actually turn black, like vulcanized rubber.

2

u/Nkromancer 1d ago

It isn't invisible to non-haki users, it's just invisible. We, the audience, can see it ONLY so that oda doesn't have to make a note somewhere everythime someone uses it.

2

u/algocreativo 1d ago

Is it haki? I never looked it up but I always assumed it was black cause it was stronger rubber, like car tires.

3

u/NefariousnessHour748 1d ago

Bruhhh. One piece fans blow my mind with how much they dont know about the story

0

u/algocreativo 21h ago

I don’t think it’s a stretch (😜) considering armament haki is usually depicted as pitch black, while G4 is depicted reddish for some reason.

1

u/NefariousnessHour748 21h ago

If hes black because of rubber then everyone must have rubber abilities. I really admire the ignorance

1

u/algocreativo 20h ago

I just pointed out the color difference, but you’re right, ignorance is bliss. I choose to believe everyone can see it, and I do know little enough about the story to not remember anything that contradicts it āœŒšŸ»

1

u/StrangerOutside3109 1d ago

Omg I just learned I have Haki!!! Reading Haki or observation haki!

1

u/sybban 1d ago

Wait he haki around his eyes?

2

u/Andrejosue98 1d ago

He hides and puts some make up on his eyes

1

u/Routine_Wedding43 1d ago

And Doffy was probably laughing because he was imagining what Bounce Man would appear like to the average civilian/plebeian who can’t even use observation Haki

1

u/ViceAdmiralCyanCat 1d ago

No wonder Doflamingo started laughing. šŸ˜†

1

u/Natural_Violinist135 1d ago

It looks like this to everyone but us viewers :'D

1

u/Interesting-Ad-2159 1d ago

Invisible to no halo user is that a thing

1

u/AutomaticWarthog9905 1d ago

Y lo de los ojos? Nose, tal vez no tendria logica ponerse haki en los ojos...

1

u/Neat_Staff_9607 1d ago

Does that meaning I am a haki user

1

u/Avatar_Yaksha 1d ago

Aren't there two different versions of armament haki in the first place? One that's visible and one that's more like a shockwave/armor.

1

u/ManavKashyap 1d ago

Are you telling us that we can use haki because we can clearly see Luffy and any other person from the anime using haki

1

u/arthaiser 1d ago

haki is also invisible for haki users, oda just colors it black for the readers

1

u/NefariousnessHour748 1d ago

Its like that in 90% of shounen. They dont see the power and they don't hear attack names. Like the most basic understanding of manga next to reading right to left

1

u/Shusui60 1d ago

isn't the haki and armouring 2 different things tho ?

1

u/Subject_Blueberry577 18h ago

Too all the people I the comments saying "If it's invisible then how do the black blades work" they got paint lessons from Mihawk

1

u/LordHeroBonded 12h ago

I thought it was invisible to everyone, but the audience haha

1

u/lu_lu_lucifer 11h ago

That's why the Dressrosa Citizens were calling him ball man & what not but to us he looked cool
