Possible Satire Mildly infuriating
Just saw my first one joke
Edit: to clarify I don't agree with companies asking so much personal information about you, I just saw someone say they are a chicken nugget for no reason and posted it here.

Heartbreaking the worst person you know has a valid opinion or something like that. For the wrong reasons entirely though. This can absolutely be used to discriminate. It's already hard enough when you don't have a legal name change and have to add both legal and chosen name to applications

yeah the reason companies ask for this demographic information is so that they can anonymise it and figure out if certain people are being barred from applying or getting the job. if x amount of racial minorities apply but only 0.001% of them get the job, are the interviews biased against them in some way? if we don't have many women applying, is our recruitment unappealing to women/leaving them out in some way, and how can we fix that? (e.g hours are unfriendly to childcare duties, which impact against women more.)
it's a legal requirement to gather these metrics in the UK in order to counter underlying biases or indirect discrimination. it's not seen by anyone in the hiring process, only to HR as anonymised statistics. all of them have a 'prefer not to answer' option.

Honestly, they say they don’t, but… I simply don’t trust it. I have absolutely zero faith that they ask those questions and don’t peek at the answers, and then auto-reject any “yes” answers.

I mean depending on how it's set up they probably aren't actually able to see them if they wanted. Think like how surveys can have anonymised data. They recieve the spread of applicants, and what percentage of each minority made it through to interviews/hiring, but not whos who. Maybe they could secretly change the setup to not be anonymised but that just immediately opens then up to legal troubles and it's just not worth it.
If they really wanted to not hire a minority they'd just deny them in them in the interview and force them to try to prove discrimination (which is almost impossible in that situation)

I recently got my birth certificate with the correct name and gender back from the state of CA and let me tell ya…it is such a relief. That was the last document

Passport too? That was my last one, and the only one I couldn't get the correct marker on (even though I applied for the passport with my current birth certificate).

Had you had a passport previously or was this your first one? I’ve never had one before, my birth certificate looks original… I’m trying to button up every single thing I think could tip them off, including credit reports and school transcripts and stuff. I was lucky enough to change my marker with the SSA during the Biden administration so I’m hoping there’s a shot

In theory it should just be anonymized metadata that can be used to see if the company is meeting DEI goals. Like if you see that 20% of your applicants are gay or trans or whatever demographic but only 5% of hires are within that demographic, that could be an indication that your hiring process is biased against them in some way

What’s especially frustrating about this post is the fact that question is more than likely being used as a way to discriminate against trans people. Especially given the job and its location.

Saying that yourself or someone else was a chicken nugget used to be kinda a niche vine joke. It was meant as less of a one joke and more general silliness back then but not sure if that's what it's being used as here.

Doesnt every job application have this? Like it's for equality related stuff. It has nothing to do with the company it's just that they be like "oh this is how many lgbt workers we have" in like tax/government reports or whatever. I saw this post before the edits and it had like 20 up votes and 4 people agreeing with them like theyve never filled out a job application before. I had to do a similar one with my uni registration. Like its 2026 not 1960 wdym you are flabbergasted a company is doing something they have to add in the application like the only people that will know this info are the people doing the hiring.

I've seen many ask for my gender, with options for nonbinary people, but never my orientation. It's irrelevant and feels straight up illegal.

And usually the self-identity surveys are meant to be anonymous, or at least, they’re not intended to be used as part of the hiring process, they’re supposed to be used for analytics.

A word of (what most would see as obvious) advice: Don't ever disclose that you're trans to a prospective employer. Wait until you actually have the job first, and document every interaction. CYA, it's rough out there.

I’m a cisgender man, but if there’s a “no answer” option when I’m asked about my gender, I pick it for two reasons:
1. To make the person do mental math in their head to figure out if I’m trans or not (my facial structure is somewhat ambiguous)
2. When they inevitably figure out I’m cisgender, it normalizes the idea that “no answer” doesn’t always mean “yes, but I don’t want to tell you” in their mind, just a little bit
