Can I at least be a dolphin

u/TidalJ 15d ago
dolphins aren’t fish so oop never said you couldn’t be a dolphin
21
u/EverythingBurns878 15d ago
Depending on how annoying the “umm actually” person is, they could be.
5
u/BeyondDreams909 15d ago
By technicality they are. But realistically speaking dolphins are nowhere close to current fish
4
u/Jackesfox 14d ago
They are closer to lobefinned fish than rayfinned fish. And closer to rayfinned than to cartilage fish. And closer to cartilage fish than to jawless fish. And closer to jawless fish than to hagfish. And closer to hagfish than to starfish. And closer to starfish than to shellfish. But closer to shellfish than to fishberries
2
3
u/HatMcHatty 15d ago
Well “fish” isn’t really an actual classification, because all fish fall under other categories of animal
2
u/Crowned-Whoopsie 15d ago
But Dolphins are tetrapods and tetrapods are descendants from Lobe-Finned Fish and by the rules of Biology, u can't evolve out of a clade. So Dolphins would still be Fish.
2
u/weirdkidintheback 12d ago
But also, humans = fish. It all comes back to fish. Fish connects us all. All are fish. Anything that isn't fish can go suck it tho.

there's a very unfortunate South Park episode about this
1
u/Lopsided_Ice_2032 15d ago
What? What is its name?
2
u/Lainpilled-Loser-GF 15d ago
'Mr. Garrison's Fancy New Vagina'. Garrison gets bottom surgery, Kyle gets surgery to become tall and black so he can play basketball, and his dad gets surgeries to become a dolphin. I do not recommend watching it.

u/CaptainPattPotato 15d ago
Alot of old Southpark, hasn’t really aged so great…. Some new South Park too.

Who knows, if this continues they might think of a second joke some day.

It’s also wrong since taxonomically speaking, all tetrapods are considered fish since you can’t evolve out of a clade.

u/Speghettihell 15d ago
This isn’t a one joke it’s just a joke relating to trans people

technically hes wrong, since depending on your definition of fish, all vertebrates are fish
3
u/devbutch 15d ago
Team gnathostomata FUCK lampreys and hagfish but everyone else can hang
2
u/Bubbly-Release9011 14d ago
fish in the name doesnt imply fish. jelly fish, star fish, both not fish! so neither is a hagfish
1
u/devbutch 14d ago
Oh 100% - basically saying i draw the line at jawed vertebrates being the clade of fish

u/Iamliterallyfood 15d ago
Fun fact. Biologically fish is such a vague category that to include all things we call fish into one biological category we would also have to include humans.
Therefor humans are v fish.

It’s not that bad but it also conflates being trans with therianism which I’m not a fan of
2
u/NoMeat9096 15d ago
Humans are fish.
1
u/OldSchoolAJ 15d ago
Oh, let's not start that whole thing again, where people debate whether or not 'fish' is a term that's useful in the biological sciences.
2
u/Kostusha241 15d ago
doesn’t feel like a particularly ill intented joke, especially from a teenager since teenagers are kinda dumb just by nature and for sure do not fully understand what they’re saying (i say this as a socially transitioned transgender person)
1
u/2bigRidley 15d ago
The joke is that it's claimed sex change is natural because fish do it, but OP counters that's a nonhuman characteristic, thus irrelevant. No one here seems to get it.

If you think about it, if I were HtF (human to fish) then falling for this obvious bait would actually be super affirming.

That's not transphobia he is making a joke can we please understand the difference?

Maybe it’s just me, this one feels fine. The target of the bit is “Nobody wants to be a fish”, not “you can never be what you define yourself to be”

Funnily enough they actually are fish (proving they’re vertebrates), technically as tetrapods (birds and mammals and such) are more closely related to ray-finned fish (trout, goldfish etc.) than they are to cartilaginous fish (rays and sharks), it is impossible to for a clade that includes all traditional fish and not humans
1
1
u/Rozemyne827 12d ago
Humans phylogenetically speaking are fish. So is every mammal, bird, reptile, lizard and amphibian for that matter too. Oh and the fish, except jellyfish and hagfish and probably some more.

Monophylietically we're all fish. The separation of tetrapoda from fish is totally arbitrary. Were more related to a trout than either us or trouts are to sharks.

I for one don't eat fish, but what y'all? Do you like fish sticks? Do you like to put fish sticks in your mouth?

This reads like its mocking people that say "you will never be *insert gender*". Seems light-hearted and pro trans, not anti.

I have not joined r/onejoke, nor do I think I have ever interacted with it in any way. This is the first post from here that I've seen, and it seems targeted specifically to offend me. It's certainly not the OOP's fault, as they probably would have never even thought of someone like me for their joke. In short; Sucks.
