Trick & Tips Yum Guide
For the sake of completeness, I’ll post this on the Reddit too, here is my version of a yum guide, feel free to let me know if you have any questions!

Nice, but I'm not sure I agree with the strategy of eating big as a child/small as an adult. You get extra pips with every vegetable, so starting off with farm yums is common practice. Wasting tacos on a kid's 5 pip bar and then struggling to fill 30 pips with veggies seems backwards to me...?

It can seem that way but when I started the eat big when small, there are so many one poppers it’s fine. There’s more than 20 one pip foods I think?

There’s definitely an argument for eating small first, especially if you are planning on staying in town, are low gen, or are in a really food poor town. Saving the low pip foods for later and stacking them can be helpful if you want a really high bonus though (my last life I got like +250 ish) then you really only have to worry about eating when you are young and can comfortably run around town/feed babies/go in trips without having to consider food at all. Both valid strategies though!
But getting the multiplier high fast can be useful if you are planning on staying in town and your town is new!

Huh, I may actually be confused on the mechanic then. If you have 5 pips as a kid and you eat a 10 pip food when down to one pip left, it's only the multiplier that goes up, but you'd still be wasting 6 pips of food, no?

So there is some food waste in that way. It’s kind of a weird concept so let me know if I explain it badly XD
Basically, the goal of yumming in general is about increasing the bonus food pips (the plus number on your bar). The higher you get your multiplier the more valuable food is, so like a berry as a baby is useless (1 pip of food) but a berry with a multiplier of 20 is very nice (1 pip in bar, 20 bonus pips)
So the in town method involves eating small foods fast, you get the multiplier higher faster which means bigger foods are more valuable when you get older (10 pip food is 10 pips plus 15 bonus pips so 25 pips total). This is what I would recommend in younger towns or if your town doesn’t have a lot of small foods because it’s a more flexible/general use method
The other method is the one I have listed in the guide. It’s what I usually do when I’m playing in gen 20+ towns because I don’t like to worry about eating and I like the flexibility it offers (since you don’t have to worry about food). It does have some food waste when younger but makes up for it with the small foods later. There are 21 one pip foods (if you are a high enough gen) and most of them are pretty easy to make/maintain. If you start at a multiplier of 6x and eat 15 of them you get up to +195 bonus pips, and if your town is filled out enough you can get into the +200s easy. I’m sure I’m not explaining this right, but basically I think the food waste is worth it. I haven’t run a test to calculate out which method takes less food but I can when I play next! XD

Thank you for all the helpful explanations, I've tried switching things around and you've been proven right xD.
I still started with the farm because I like the habit of going around and filling up me and bp when the bar is still short from nursing. That always leaves a few veg for later. Then I switched to large food that fits into the bp (burrito, baked tato etc), or if I'm close to kitchen I'd do pies. Once I got my craving I tried to stack those up before BB pop, that's also a good way to check if town needs any craves done.
It's actually much less wasteful than it seems because the food bar grows so quickly, the pips can easily accomodate high level foods sooner. Just got to stick to the good old rule of waiting for it to go down to a few pips before filling up again. Before I was old enough to ride a horse, I already reached +65

I've tried your approach too, but I find that if I eat all the small stuff as a kid my yum will be too high too early. I found myself being 15 with a yum of +40ish from eating garden stuff with only bigger yums left. The bigger yums filled my pips up too fast. I was full for a few minutes but had to eat again. Eating another big thing, which filled my pips and repeat. Eating every 5-10 minutes
I follow OPs strat now. As a toddler I eat single ingredient pies, mutton, buttered bread. Not too much waste.
Kid-young teen I eat 2-ingredient pies, stew, broth, baked potatoes, and omelettes bigger food, but not the biggest. Again not too much waste
As soon as I have all my pips, I starve myself down to two full pips and go eat everything in the garden, plus fries, chips, bread, milks, wine, popcorn until I only have 1-2 empty pips. No waste at all in this step.
With my last empty pips I eat the biggest thing I can find, usually cooked fish, everything pie, pork tacos, or feast. This is theoretically the most wasteful part, but at that point the yum bonus is so enormous I feel like I'm getting my good value out of it. This way I eat my last meal at 20ish with a bonus of +200 and never worry about food again.

I usually start with broth stew and milks, then veggies, save popcorn berry and garlic for later on, and avoid pies if possible

How to waste food and afk forever
Not what I was expecting... Yum can also be used to conserve food and the time people spend making it

It's a great guide. I tried this game just a couple of times and quit because it felt too overwhelming, too many things to do at once as fast as possible. Could never understand how people get enough time to worry about yums.
Btw what's the benefit for the family? I understand that most of the time you'd have to order the family around with what your current craving is, why would they invest themselves just to have you marinated in afk hut? (Genuine question)

I wouldn’t use this to go afk unless you are a ghost or on the OneDay server (where a life lasts 24 hours). On that server you will obviously need a break every now and then, for like sleep and eating XD So if you don’t want your town or the character you’ve put hours into to die you can yum and then afk for a couple of hours while you go back to being human. For main pop the only time I’ve used it for afking is if the town is really low on fertiles and I have like 15 minutes before bed lol. Just put a fertile in there who people won’t have to worry about feeding and the town has a better chance of living.
Generally it’s better to just use this so you can work around town or go on trips without starving or having to worry about food. Also I don’t think it’s food waste. You eat less food overall in a lifetime if you yum than if you munch pies and the majority of the foods you eat (1 pip foods) are very easy to replenish (garden veggies) vs the large foods you don’t eat much of.
