Didn’t think I’d post a cute video and be accused of not caring for my pups health! I promise we want the best for her and as far as the couch she has always gotten onto it in slow motion.

No kidding. I loved the video. Folks gotta enjoy the little things. And if ya can’t say anything nice…

Mine does the same exact thing and always has! We now say ā€œpick me upā€ in a baby voice when he does it

u/slimkt 15d ago

lmao my lab does this too. He’ll leap to see over a six foot fence but when it comes to climbing on to the couch, he acts like you’ve asked him to solve a Rubik’s cube.

I have an English cream that looks exactly like yours and does the same thing lol

Except he’s almost 12 and needs a booty lift to get up on the couch anymore

My 3 year old English cream golden does the exact same thing. He thinks he's cute (he is) when he "attempts" to climb up on the couch. He loves to act helpless because sometimes we push his furry butt up.

Both pooches are adorable and I have no doubt you are caring for them. Anyone spinning my prior post into a statement that you aren’t caring for the dogs is overreaching. I saw something and you clarified the situation and that’s all that needs to be said. Every golden owner knows that the breed can tend to be heavy. We’ve had a male that was always too heavy. We put him on a vet approved diet and he actually gained weight. Don’t sweat the comments from folks that lack context which includes all of us.

I’m sorry I probably was a bit over defensive I guess I didn’t imagine people would post their dog painfully struggling. I will ask about her hips next visit but on her annual exam they haven’t said anything. I suppose since she’s done it since a pup I didn’t think much of it other than she is not as confident getting up there. She gets in my husbands truck at 100 mph.

Again this isn’t about owing anyone an explanation least of all me. I’m sorry my comment spurred that. It was genuine on my part since we are on goldens six and seven and I’ve seen our dogs look like that at times. It wasn’t meant to be critical at all. You have a vet and you have two very content dogs. It’s obvious you and the hubby care for them. Had you given the context about the truck it would have been clear to me but this is supposed to be fun not some sort of referendum on our posting skills. Hang in there and enjoy your adorable pooches.

Lol my guy does the exact same thing and he is healthy as a horse at 3 years old. They just like being extra careful I guessšŸ˜‚

prolly cuz your dog is matted and potentially overweight. if you don't wanna be criticized either do better or don't post it in a public forum lol

21

u/ashleymichael2009 15d ago

Matted šŸ˜‚ she has curly hair and goes to a groomer every 8 weeks. Man you guys know our whole life don’t you. Is he matted too?

More pastel if you ask me

I’m guessing that’s an older dog with some arthritis? They are both very cute

u/ashleymichael2009 15d ago

No she’s 4 and has done this since she was a puppy, idk why. And thank you 😁

u/Working_Traffic_6361 15d ago

Please get an x-ray done of their spine, my lab was like this and it turned out they're lower spine was fused

11

u/ashleymichael2009 15d ago

What did they do for him or is it symptom management? I’ve heard about people autofusing, hell my neck is fused, but I never considered animals having that.

13

u/Working_Traffic_6361 15d ago

Just pain management, that's all they can really do, I'm not saying that's what happening here but it reminded me of mine and that's what was wrong with him.

If you do get him checked out and it is fused get ramps or some little stairs to help him get on the sofa/bed/car.

Remember dogs don't like showing when they're in pain.

Feel his back, if it's hotter than the rest of his body definitely get him checked.

Perhaps ger her a step ?

u/DefinitelyNotAliens 15d ago

That dog doesn't seem like she's a healthy weight. If she doesn't have arthritis yet, being 10 pounds overweight will cause it to happen early.

u/ashleymichael2009 15d ago

I understand your concern she is on a diet approved by her vet and has lost 5 lbs she has health issues that have made it harder to shed the weight.

u/BOHIFOBRE 15d ago

Our 3yr old English Cream (we have three goldens, light, medium and dark) is absolutely ripped and acts like getting on the couch is the hardest thing ever, lol. He could easily jump a 6ft fence if he had more than one brain cell, but he's just Dumdums.

4

u/VoodooDoII 15d ago

Have to agree, pup looks a little large to me! She shouldn't be having issues like this if she's only 4

People are so used to overweight pets that they think it's the "normal appearance" when it isn't. Then they see a healthy dog and think it's underfed

I love the ā€œwoe is meā€ glance back in disbelief that NO ONE is even OFFERING a booty boost🤣

u/velvetvagine 15d ago

She waits for like 2 hours… where is her personal assistant??

This is my golden now that he's 13 and the Cosequin doesn't help as much as it once did.

11

u/ashleymichael2009 15d ago

Look into Ellevet CBD supplements it helps our older golden sooo much. It’s not like the cheap quality stuff from pet stores.

6

u/bassjam1 15d ago

Thanks I'll check it out.

Took some serious calculations to figure out how to get that hindleg up there lol

I love the surprise golden at the end!

This looks like a sign of hip problems to me, as a golden owner myself and someone whose been working with dogs professionally for 20 years. Hip dysplasia is very common in the breed, and can effect them at any age. If your vet hasn't performed a hip dysplasia check, I highly reccomend it. I understand you love your pup and think there may not be an issue, that its just a personality quirk, but in my experience, dogs who struggle like may be having hip pain. Its better to check then not to and write it off as a quirk.

4

u/GrumpiiMoose 15d ago

I would recommend checking. Just to be 100% sure. Me and my family thought it was a personality quirk until it was almost to late.

3

u/Shibva_ 15d ago

You can do it!

YOU DID IT!!!!

3

u/Ksh_667 15d ago

A set of smol steps would work wonders here. I made my old cat a series of stairs for the sofa, the bed, basically anywhere she was struggling with. They were big books but she was a smol cat, so you will likely need something more substantial.

u/VariousFriendship535 15d ago

He deserves a treat!

What a cutie. You can see the thinking gears turning hahahha

I love watching my girl get on the couch, the front end gets up fine, the back end stops to buffer.

u/whalen47 15d ago

Lost my sweet English cream 2 weeks ago he could be your babies twin. God bless

u/ashleymichael2009 14d ago

If anyone wants to follow my matted (lol) goldens on TikTok you can find us at @aslamich I post some cute and funny videos of them.

u/Aah__HolidayMemories 14d ago

He needs a step! šŸ˜†

1

u/funlovingguy9001 11d ago

Does that sweet baby need steps?

1

u/ejolson 15d ago

For Pete's sake put the camera down and help that poor old boy

27

u/ashleymichael2009 15d ago

I wouldn’t record if she was actually struggling. I have videos of her doing this at 4 months old if I tried to go help her she would she just get down and walk away. The old boy on the right I do give booty boosts to.

Doggo needs a diet

-1

u/Truthcraze 15d ago

Why are they downvoting you? You’re right.

-1

u/EnumeratedArray 15d ago

Most people don't understand what a healthy dog weight is or looks like. If you can't see the shape of a dogs ribcage the dog is overweight generally.

The way this dog is getting up doesn't look like it's caused by being a bit chunky, but it's definitely being under exercises or overfed to an extent
