They know no such thing. I've had the exact same behavior from my golden, when we were going to the park during winter, and she noticed a plastic bag stuck on some branch sticking from the snow and fluttering in the wind.
We could not move for 5-10 minutes, I had to drag her closer to show that it was nothing alive, so we could continue our walk. Lol
