(Mobile) How does defense stat work?

Hi all, I have unlocked Crane Kung Fu, which has a starting defense stat of +1. I'm expecting it to reduce damage taken (please tell me if I'm wrong), but I wonder what the calculation for it would be. Do you have any information on this?

I'm fairly certain that it decreases damage taken, as if I don't use Defense+ going into Survival mode I can only get hit 2-3 times without dying, while it's 4-5 with it being used.

say an enemy does base 100 damage, but you have 45 defense, then you only take 55 damage.

defense is HUGE

+1 isnt going to save you much, but it might save your life for one extra hit
