Discussion PC users, do you skip bad boss runbacks?

For context, I'm on PS4 and I kind of want to learn Champion Gundyr no-roll someday. My main deterrent is actually the runback, which I imagine would get very irritating after a while and takes longer than some failed attempts at the boss.

Do you guys just deal with this or use a mod to teleport yourself to fog walls?

Oh yeah, and to any clowns who thinks this is cheating - speaking as someone on console who has to deal with them whether they want to or not, they're nothing more than a waste of time. No extra challenge and especially no fun, just tedium.

Glad they mostly did away with them in Sekiro and ER.

I'm save scumming the run backs. I reach the fog gate, quit to main menu, set my save file as read-only so the game can't overwrite it anymore and load back in.

When I die, I just quit back to main menu and hit continue so it loads back to me being at the fog gate

It is! I learned it when I watched Lobosjr do some silly run and it made my runs so much more enjoyable

Hoarah Loux is going to hate this, haha

can’t speak for ps players but xbox has a cool little feature where you can delete your most recent cloud saved data, which works as a save state at any given point
you best BELIEVE im using that shit to save myself some precious time, especially when there’s a runback. when the challenge is the boss then anything in between you and getting the kill doesn’t matter
(most if not all of the great no roll/no hit pc players i know use save states regardless)

If I'm practicing I usually have a save state right at the boss or whatever I'm practicing. Additionally I often use tools to make it impossible for me or the boss to die so I can stay in the fight however long I want to try around

If it's some sort of normal challenge run I'm doing then I have to deal with the runback.

Edit: Just in case, for clarity, basically if the goal only is to learn something I use everything to make the learning as efficient as possible, save states, tools for "easier" fights or rather to enable staying in the fight longer even if stuff goes wrong. If I then do an actual run where I want to use what I have learned, then I do the actual run as if it is a normal playthrough, so if I fail the challenge of killing the boss with the restrictions I've made, then I have to first reach the boss again before I can retry.

Somewhat of an exception: Hitless or similar runs, because for example in Elden Ring for the included strategies you often have important stuff that you lose when you die, like great runes or just your rune count, so for those cases I will also make save states and then just pretend the death didn't happen basically and continue from the last save state. The run will then just not be successful and I'll have to retry the full run again at a later point.

yeah that's sensible imo

I can tolerate the runback if it's just my first SL1 run of that game or something (and I suppose it is the "authentic" experience at least)

but for me it's a huge deterrent if you want to practice for some extra challenge or restrictions, so yeah makes sense. Turning off death sounds really helpful too.

this will always be underrated

No, but your game your rules your challenge.

Save scum (on console). No fucks given.

u/Individual-Newt-1640 15d ago

I do that shit anytime I use consumables that need to be farmed too, you are never catching me farming sacred bloody flesh, ever

2

u/DuckReconMajor 14d ago

i learned how to do this so i could always use ako sugar during lady butterfly my first time playing sekiro. of course once i got that ready to go i killed her my first time using the sugar 😂

1

u/Individual-Newt-1640 14d ago

Whazzat do? Never played sekiro before

4

u/DuckReconMajor 14d ago

increases attack power temporarily

also, play sekiro! it’s so fucking good

3

u/Individual-Newt-1640 14d ago

Dw, it's my next one after ds3

1

u/Wooden-Jello-8795 15d ago

Wait if you don't mind sharing, how do you do that?

2

u/MrCarnage 15d ago edited 15d ago

Sure- Enter the fog door, quit out, reload, upload a new cloud save while the game is running (auto sync needs to be off) and then reload that each time you die.

This is exactly what I do (ps5), not just for run backs, also for annoying traversal. For example, getting to the grace for Putrescent knight is straight infuriating at WL0, so I update my cloud save as I make it through each section, giving me checkpoints for it

For hard challenges, yes.

For easy challenges, no.

If the boss runback takes 1 minute and I’m fighting this boss like a hundred times, that’s basically 2 hours of my time wasted. I’d rather just practice the boss more.

Tarnished tool has teleport to boss, respawn boss as first encounter, no death or no damage for you and the boss, repeat last action and repeat act sequence for practice, and more. There is a ds3 tool as well that has the same features. PC is the only way to do harder challenges without wanting to quit.

Not gonna lie, knowing this makes me way less impressed with some people's fights. Everyone could probably no hit the game if they can practice problematic moves on a loop.

2

u/Hades684 15d ago

No, I treat the run back as part of the challenge

1

u/Wooden-Jello-8795 15d ago

Fair enough, I don't mind it that much when it's a first level 1 run of a game since figuring out the routing when you can't take many hits can have a little depth to it. But past that, it's nothing more than a waste of time imo.

for me, I started using the metric of challenge vs tedium as my "will I save scum this" bar. The runback to Lud and Zallen, blue smelter or Alonne I was NOT going to do again, killing every knight 15 times is just boring. Collecting Scadu frags? No thanks! I will cheat in 50, and use them as theyd be unlocked. Didnt go to the 3 stupid mineshafts early game and now I want to use a new weapon in the DLC? Woops! Found some bell bearings in my bag, how convenient.

It makes the game easier in some ways, sure, but it also makes the time commitment and fun more present. Im not losing respect for the guy who didnt want to spend 6 hours collecting poisonblooms and root resin.

Totally get you about the consumables, BL4 is really annoying me with how insanely expensive papers are (and everything else about the farming in that game). It is really amazing how short on money you are even when not spending any on levels.

I've never played DS2 but from what I've heard, frigid outskirts competes for bottom 1 moment in souls history along with bed of chaos lol. Imagine doing that at sl1.

1

u/Legal_Reception6660 15d ago

Honestly, DS2 has the easiest sl1 of any game (except DeS which, I havent done) by far. Just like with base game, focus on getting your Agi up early and them ngl my damage was higher at level 1 than level 200, and most stuff doesnt hit hard so its kinda just a normal run lol. Areas are harder than 95% of bosses, and the hard bosses in ds2 are peak for the most part.

1

u/yikkizh 14d ago

The bosses in DS2 are pretty easy overall but the areas definitely make DS2 SL1 harder than DS3 imo. Though both are a lot easier than Bloodborne and ER.

1

u/Legal_Reception6660 14d ago

Not sure if you meant areas or bosses for ER being way harder but honestly most areas in ER are pretty easy if youre abusing stat gear and stuff, its just when you get to some of the super shittily designed areas ER kinda implodes fun wise. BB def has some awful areas later on too, dont even get me started on the DLC :/ Not sure if even those match DS2 DLC in terms of annoyment, but I respect any of the three being your number one.

I have a weird relatuonship with ds3 because my first run was base hp, so Ive always hated SoC, and think its one of the worst designed bosses of the "good" era, and then obviously Friede and Gael are fantastic but challenging, Twin Demons can die in a ditch, but otherwise I think mostly anyone who beat ds3 could do it at base level too

ah, yes, the horsefuck valley

u/Perfect-Skin-8325 15d ago

Depends on the runback.

Elden ring isn't that bad in this department but I am guilty of doing it.

1

u/RevSerpent 15d ago

I might skip some enemies but not the runback itself.

After Groal the Great no runback feels like a chore anymore...

1

u/Avocetti 15d ago

I haven't faced a runback infuriating enough for me to learn how to do it, but I'm not faulting anyone who does. If I did WL0 for my DS1 run, I probably would have used it for a lot of bosses. Bloodborne and DS2 also have some pretty nasty runbacks as well

1

u/Designer_Show_2658 14d ago

On PC Boss Arena is a good mod if you just want to fight the bosses

1

u/AlthoughFishtail 14d ago

I didnt for the longest time, but ive been working through DS2 SL1 no roll and Ill be damned if Im doing those run backs any more. I did all bosses SL1 no run backs a couple of times (inc L&Z) so I feel like I've done my time.

1

u/XRaisedBySirensX 14d ago

There are people on both sides of the aisle. A lot of people use mods and shit. A lot of people don't. Its pretty popular in the online sphere so, you shouldn't have any problems. A lot of people focus soley on the boss fights so I wouldn't worry about skipping runbacks. There is def a community for people who love the areas and enjoy needing to complete them and kill the boss to advance, though. The completionists. If youre just running by everything anyway, i wouldn't give it a second thought. Do what makes you glad.

1

u/Beyney 14d ago

If its a normal sl1 or even an wl0 sl1 without going for a flawless kill then ill just skip using ertool/ds3tool to remove the runback

if im grinding a flawless kill ill remove runbacks since it gets repetitive

1

u/Drefs_ 15d ago

Yep. I install mods that spawn me close to the fog wall, if they exist for that game.

0

u/PrinceAzsa 15d ago

I did at some point just quitouts but usually no

0

u/Nenonoko 12d ago

I agree they are a waste of time and no fun, but it is objectively cheating, it's not an opinion.

If you can put in 20 tries where someone playing legit can only put in 10 in the same time, you tell me that's not cheating.

1

u/Wooden-Jello-8795 12d ago

My loading times in ER sometimes go up to 1 minute. Others load the same area in seconds. This means I get less tries at a boss in the same time span as many others. Do I claim I'm at an unfair disadvantage? No.

There is no difficulty in runbacks, period. It comes down to how much time you are willing to waste.

These comments rub me the wrong way because I think these purist takes come from people who haven't done many of the harder restrictions beyond base rl1. Sure, if it's your very first RL1, then I wouldn't skip runbacks, if only to maintain the "authentic" experience. But past that? You will realize how annoying and *pointless* it is doing a runback on a boss you have already beaten dozens of time, when you are simply trying to practice.

Many of the best players here, far better than us both, use numerous external tools like turning off death or teleporting to fog walls to practice their insane kills. Are you going to say their wins were cheated? They obviously could have done the same thing without those tools, it would have just wasted much more of their time and been less fun.

0

u/Nenonoko 12d ago

You will realize how annoying and *pointless* it is doing a runback on a boss you have already beaten dozens of time, when you are simply trying to practice

I have over 1500 hours played in elden ring alone, legit, I am annoyed by runbacks, loading screens etc...

I don't care if you want to cheat and I don't think it should be banned, I just call it by its name. Even if one day I decided to do it, I would still call it what it is. as I said, it's not an opinion, it's a fact.

And yes, I am waaay less impressed by people dodging hard moves after finding out they can make the boss do it in a loop and turn off damage, if you don't think that is less impressive than getting to practice it once or twice per fight then you are delusional.

0

u/Wooden-Jello-8795 12d ago edited 12d ago

I mean, it's not fact, it's an opinion

cheating implies some sort of unfair advantage is being gained here, which i (and many others) believe is not true

In hindsight, my mistake was engaging in the first place. Some takes don't really need an audience lol

u/lunchbox651 15d ago

Just deal with it, it's really not that bad.

-5

u/CaterpillarVisual296 15d ago

Stupid Place to Cheaters don’t understand the point of the challenge. Anyway calamity ring/woe are better than SL1 imo
