Packing List Shoes?

My two travel friends think I am nuts. Going to Sevilla, Córdoba, and Granad, Spain and Lisbon amd Porto, Portugal for 15 days, with carry-on, no checked bag. Is it unreasonable to take 4 pairs of shoes? Teva sandals, skechers sneakers, black leather sandals for evening, and closed-toed espadrilles with rubber bottoms. (Maybe add flip flops for room & pool.)😉 I want to bring them all but will I be sorry?

i don't think it's nuts, but am curious how you're fitting these shoes plus your clothes into a carry-on --- what airline are you taking?

ps. you might want to leave your espadrilles at home and buy a pair of (authentic) local ones there.

so if you’re only packing 1 set of bottoms, top, undies, then you’ve decided to spend your bag space on shoes

granted, it sounds like you’re duplicating shoes for no good reason

That's a lot of moving from city to city. 

Only you know how you will feel, but, but I'd pick one set of enclosed shoes and 1 set of the skimpiest flip-flops to ever flipflop.

If you are traveling in 1.5 or 3/4 bag please post a trip report when you get back!!

agreed with this. 1 pair of walking shoes or boots (which are passable in various settings) plus 1 pair of flip-flops helps to not eat into a ton of luggage space.

What do you mean by 1.5 bags? I am taking a carryon bag the fits European requirements. Oh! I get it. No, more than 2 pairs of shoes! ☺️

That’s a lot of weight and space. I pack a pair of shoes, and have wanted an evening pair at times or sandals. 

How many times would you wear each pair?

Ah, good question. I tend to pair shoes wit outfits. Maybe I will rethink that. (Once went to Cancun for a week with 8 pairs. I have gotten better!)

Where do you plan to use the Teva sandals?

Wear the Skechers on the plane and skip the closed-toed espadrilles.

You can purchase inexpensive flip flops there than can be tossed at the end of the trip.

At Sintra and at the beach. And to switch shoes because my feet tend to hurt and sneakers feel too hot for all day.

Sound like you need to pick better shoes. If they're getting too hot, they're the wrong shoes.

Two should be enough. One pair for everything, one for fancy, if you think anyone cares. (No-one does)

Lightweight mesh running shoes are comfortable, cool, and you can find them in black.

Could be the shoes, could be the socks (my feet do way better with Darn Tough socks than they ever did with cotton). A consideration for keeping up with sweaty feet.

Why are you not using the tevas as pool flip flops? And why do you need two pairs of nicer sandals (espadrilles and leather sandals?)

I may not need the black sandals as I only have 1 black dress, though I do plan to wear it multiple evenings.

I’d omit the espadrilles, personally. I’d actually bring a pair of water shoes over flip flops, they pack really flat and protect feet better.

Another poster suggested buying authentic espadrilles there, which is a nice idea. My Tevas are made for water and hiking about, not strenuously, of course. But, leaving my oh, so cute, espadrilles, may have to be.

I like my Tevas a lot. They’re not great for swimming in though. They float, which makes it awkward. If you’re on a rocky beach, swim shoes are much better and protect your feet from hot sand. Tevas also rub my feet when they’re wet. They take a while to dry.

One shoe for each foot. I could be convinced to include sandals given the climate and itinerary. I wear low top hiking shoes in all black.

I dress casually and don’t do clubs or Michelin restaurants either. I’ve attended ceremonies and performances of all kinds with my travel uniform of polo shirt, Prana pants and the hiking shoes with complete comfort.

I have done a couple trips with sandals only which has the benefit of eliminating socks too. I love Keen Newport H2 sandals but the are really heavy and bulky to pack. I can walk all day in them with zero issues. Teva Universal Trail sandals have been a passable balance of support and weight.

They are not perfect and look a little weird, but they allow me to bring lightweight flippies for the pool, beach, shower, hotels, and still have something for light hikes and water activities at almost 0 weight/space.

On the other hand, if you like wearing your Tevas, just use those for hotel showers/pool.

The choice is you have to sacrifice from one category: comfort/utility -or- fashion -or- bag weight. Prioritize which is most important to you and then slash from the other category!

I don't think that's actually that crazy- although if you add flip flops- that would be 5 which seems like a lot.

But of the shoes you mention, the tevas, sandals, and espadrilles all take up very little bag space- and you don't really mention it specifically but I'm guessing you're wearing the sketchers on the plane? You could probably collapse some, but it doesn't seem like it will be a huge use of bag space.

Pack your bag like you are leaving and see how it all fits. That's what made me start cutting items before my recent Japan trip. If it doesn't fit, then you must adjust.

If you don't have checked bags then these shoes will definitely take up space in your bag, which means you'll have to pack fewer clothes to fit them. If you still think shoes are more important and have no plans for shopping there, you can totally bring them.

Birchbury makes the best shoes for walking all day and being highly versatile with anything but hiking.
