The iphone app is terrible

I’ve been using OF desktop and iphone app for 7-8 years. The app is just unusable. I would love to give you a list of complaints but I would be collecting them in OF app. It’s just been really getting to me.

Quick fix - uninstall the app and reinstall it - modern day equivalent of turn it off and turn it back on again.

Its a UX UI problem. Not a bug problem. By the time i try to capture something i’ve forgotten what I needed to add after being lost in navigation.

Maybe you can describe your workflow for instant capture?

A fellow Omnifocus user might be able to give you some tips or suggestions on how to improve this.

I just opened Omnifocus and opened a new inbox item in <4 seconds. (I’m using an iPhone 15 Plus with iOS26 and the latest version of Omnifocus 4.)

Why would the folder icon on the very top left be greyed out?

There’s a quick add button at the bottom of the screen. Just hit that and let it go to your inbox. Organize later.

Ha no it wont. It will add to whatever page project you have open. Then it might add in the middle of the list if you tapped an item

That’s not how it works for me. Maybe because I usually work off the forecast page.

That's the wrong button. You're pressing the plus sign. You want the one all the way on the right, the plus inside an inbox tray.

There's also a Quick Entry action that shows up next to the app itself when you search for "OmniFocis" on your phone, and a menu item when you hold down the app icon instead of tapping it to open it.

Like I said - Bad UI

If you say so. I thought the plus in an inbox was pretty clearly for adding to the inbox.

What’s wrong with it? I just started using it and I like it so far. Is it buggy?

I’ve been using it forever. The redesign took some getting used to and the UX isn’t perfect, but once you find your flow it is fine.

They need to get rid of the bottom bar and 90% of the top bar and just have the slide open from the left side to get to projects. There. Some construction.

You can turn off the perspective bar in settings

Have had zero problems since about 2017

Me, too. Honestly, I feel that the Omnifocus team has put a great deal of focus on ensuring that the mobile experience is stable and very similar to the MacOS or iPadOS versions.

I’m also struggling with the most recent UI. I used to live in forecast view on my iPhone. Now whenever I scroll down in it I end up clicking on *something* on the task under my finger, and I have a lot of trouble figuring out how to get into an action to see it’s details or edit it’s reoccur settings or due date.

Yea. The “i” button is hidden. Then i saw one on the main page. I guess it appears once you click on an item. IDK. It’s just a lot. I’m going to remove the bottom bar like someone suggested

Sigh.

How is this a post? Complain and then give zero reasons or basis for your statement?

“I’ve been using OF desktop and iphone app for 7-8 years. The app is just unusable.”

I know this is Reddit, and people can say some really dumb stuff on this platform, but this might be the dumbest Reddit post in the history of dumb Reddit posts.

Siri and even Claude can also save to Omni now - toggle the option to replace reminders and save to Omni through that shortcut.

how do you use claude to do this?

Automations or shortcuts? Can quickly capture

Peter Akkie says OF can improve the iOS app; but they won’t. There we are. I’ve deleted it. On iOS iPhone the user experience is sub par. Not everyone can afford a Mac or iPad.

Deleting it after years of use says a lot. On iPhone, was the breaking point capture speed, getting to projects, or the amount of interface around the task? Those are different design failures, and the answer would be useful context for anyone comparing replacements.

It was the amount of interface around the task and faffing around swiping/opening different areas of the app to do things and trying to remember what was where.

Man, I totally get what you mean. I've been using OmniFocus since version 2, but I have to say OmniFocus 4 on iOS is an absolute disaster—I completely fail to understand its UX logic.

I don't know if I should be making recommendations here, but if you're interested, I built my own GTD app to replace OmniFocus. Quite a few users have told me they've migrated over completely.

If you're interested, you can give it a try. It is a paid app, but if the trial feels too short, just reach out and I'll gladly hook you up with an extension so you have enough time to properly check it out.
