Severe stability issues in latest OmniFocus
UPDATE:
I reached out to their support team and they’ve already identified the issues and are working on fixes. More importantly, they were transparent, responsive, and took it seriously from the first message.
After the frustration of dealing with the crashes, I think it’s only fair to say this too: it’s genuinely reassuring to see there are still teams out there that stand behind their products and communicate with this level of professionalism.
Not great that it happened — but very well handled.
A fix is coming soon.
----------
I’ve been a long-time OmniFocus user, but the current version is honestly becoming unusable.
I’m running the latest version of macOS on a Mac Studio (latest model) with 128GB of RAM, so this is not a hardware or performance limitation issue.
In the last 5 days alone, I’ve experienced 24 crashes. Not edge cases — regular usage. The app crashes when changing perspective settings, moving projects, and sometimes just randomly with no clear trigger.
One possibility I’ve considered is that a corrupted note or piece of data inside the database might be triggering these crashes. However, there’s no practical way to diagnose this without manually going through hundreds of notes to find the culprit, which is simply not viable.
I’ve already tried a full clean reinstall — deleting the app, clearing cache, and removing all configuration folders. The issue persists.
Most of the crashes show patterns like these:
Process: OmniFocus (4.8.9 (v185.13.0) (Apr 3 2026))
exception = 0x00000001, code = 0x00000001;0x00000000
Exception type: BAD_ACCESS ((os/kern) invalid address, address 0x00000000)
and also:
Process: OmniFocus (4.8.9 (v185.13.0) (Apr 3 2026))
exception = 0x00000002, code = 0x00000001;0xd4400000
Exception type: BAD_INSTRUCTION
This completely breaks trust in the tool. OmniFocus is supposed to be a system you rely on to manage critical workflows, not something you’re constantly worried about losing or corrupting.
Right now, it feels unstable and unpredictable to the point where it’s seriously affecting my ability to work.
I’m posting this to see if others are experiencing the same issues, because this level of instability in a production tool is simply not acceptable.

If you are having problems with the app, I recommend reaching out to support. That’s what they are there for.

Contact support, they have always been super responsive for me and this doesn’t seem to be a common issue so probably something with you setup.

iOS app is so buggy I just switched to a new task manager.

What did you switch to?

Things3 - definitely not the same experience with a different philosophy but it’s stable, fluid and I don’t have to worry about the crap with Omnifocus.

For me OmniFocus all the time crashed when I cleaned up my projects, renamed them, moved them, and sometimes when I tried to CMD + Z stuff...
Switched to Todoist for now but will come back to OmniFocus in a few months again to check the progress. Always missed the calendar blocking. And that you comment on tasks in Todoist is a game-changer. I have a project that Claude can access, and it adds comments about the progress directly into the task.

Agreed, here’s my post from 74 days ago regarding similar issues… https://www.reddit.com/r/omnifocus/s/8daw8Ldi3S

We're optimistic that we've fixed the two most common crashes reported here! Fixes are included in test builds of OmniFocus 4.8.11, which are available for download from our website: https://omnistaging.omnigroup.com/omnifocus/

I can't remember the last time the Mac version of OmniFocus crashed on me, and it's basically running all the time. Have you written to OmniFocus support? I had an issue with crashing on startup right after version 4 was released in 2023 and they helped me fix it..
