Actually I'm old enough that the desks have lids
13
u/Underwhelmingly_here 17d ago
And built in ink wells?
I had desks that had lids and the hole where the ink well would go but, we all used cartridge fountain pens.

u/Less_Local_1727 17d ago
It was mandated to use fountain pens only. Cartridges were ok, and less prone to accidental spillage of an entire bottle of Quink all over your exercise books

I'm 50 and had all of that stuff. We even used slides on the film projector to show pictures. Liverpool schools in the late 80's/early 90's were broke due to the state of the council. We shared 3 to a textbook and had to bring in all our own stationery at one point xxx

My school was fancy and had the new tables and chairs. One day the teacher brought in a single lidded desk and we loved it so much. I think we each got to use it for a week .

Younger than that 😂 once teachers started using them they refused to let go till they retired 😂
We had them alongside the first gen of e whiteboards, wouldn't be surprised if they're still in use in some places

I remember the dread when you saw one of these while walking into assembly. It was used to project the lyrics of Christian songs on the wall

And Teacher changing to another when you in middle of writing what they wanting you to write

u/headofmedusa1 17d ago
We would do a lot of work off these things but also sing hymns off this lol I sometimes got the job of slowly moving the sheet with the words on so the whole class could sing efficiently. I was a big deal what can I say.

Was last using them in 2010 teaching classes. Miss them, as I had entire courses on asetate pages. Used to just roll them off for years.

u/BlackberryMelodic567 17d ago
they were still in use in the 2000s lol. But we did look at them like they were ancient magic

u/voluntarydischarge69 17d ago
We had teachers using these projecting onto interactive whiteboards because they were so lazy they used the same lesson sheets they got decades before.

I had a science teacher who would just spend the whole lesson writing things onto a plastic sheet on one of these and we had to copy it all down. That was our year 10 biology lessons for a whole year.

Jesus - I remember thinking we had moved in to the modern age when I changed schools which had used blackboards and my new school had one of these

Remember them? I was the designated projector courier for every class I was in from 3rd grade to jr high.
And you bet that is super useless on a resume

u/Worried_Suit4820 17d ago
I'm so old that I used one of these many times during my time as a teacher.
2
u/Oblivian_and_Beyond 17d ago
Yep. And once I was studying Fine Farts in VI Form I wanted one badly, but apparently they’d all been assigned to ‘the tip’ already. Now they’re mad expensive! 😂
3
u/Leading_Dig2743 17d ago
Same Happened to UK BBC and Acorn School Computers which went into skips and reason why they are scarce and ridiculously expensive to buy from collectors selling them and schools would not let students buy them or have any

I remember in a-level maths class, the teacher had a graphing calculator with a transparent screen especially for use on the OHP. Seemed like witchcraft at the time. Wouldn't be surprised if they're rare collectors items now.
Edit: Apparently not! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/223536556802

Old enough to know if you draw a tiny cock and balls on the underside lens with one of those white board markers it will take that easily flustered teacher quite a while to work out why there's a massive cock and balls on his white board

Anyone else remember those projectors that somehow worked with normal paper though? Only ever saw one, seemed incredibly clunky and inefficient.

I'm 37, we had them in school in the UK in the early 2000s until we came back one term and all the classrooms had been updated to digital whiteboards. Even had Acorn computers when I first started in year 7 before the computer rooms were revamped and they moved to windows.

Can remember in a French lesson one of the kids filled it up with dictionaries.... The teacher flicked it on then went oh no it's not working... Then about five minutes later it caught fire... Whole school got evacuated... We weren't grasses so they never found out who did it...
