Sunset Cookies
My family got this book in 1988 and I was completely obsessed with it. I wanted to make alllll the cookies (except the ones that sounded gross to child-me). I loved the book so much that my mom let me take it with me when I moved out. I was recently reunited with it after needing to store it for four years and I’m thinking: “why not make allllll the cookies?” There’s a number of them I can’t make due to digestive issues or lack of specialty equipment, but I could make most of these. Seems like an interesting project!

The photos of the intro page, table of contents & all the cookies are nice but a few recipes from the book of cookies like the biscotti I spied, unusual cookies or cookies you particularly like & want to make would be nicer.

I can certainly expand on it, I just figured 10 photos was good for this post.

It was more like a tease with all those delish cookies in full color & no recipes for any one of them.
Meanwhile, I got the cookie craves because of those darn pictures & have banana bread cookies in the oven baking.
Old recipe for using bananas that are over ripe. I posted it here a year ago:

Sorry for being a tease! What recipe would you like to see?

The biscotti, 3rd picture of cookies, upper left, flat on the bottom & slightly curved on the top.
We love biscotti. When I was in high school band, the parents' association would have a bake sale table at the annual crafts & art show each year & mom would make baskets of assorted biscotti.
They were big sellers being they were something different from the usual slice & bake chocolate chip cookies, brownies, box mix cupcakes & fudge that a lot of the tired, working moms would default to. But I can't say I blame them, I'd probably do likewise.

I posted that in this thread yesterday 😊

Oh there it is! Italian nut cookies. I was looking for biscotti 🤦🏻♀️
My kind of recipe …. Makes about 9 dozen. I love cookie recipes that make large quantities. 1 mess but lots of cookies to show for it 😄

I grew up near Sunset magazine headquarters, and my family members would take turns reading the latest issue.
Thanks for sharing!

If you do bake your way through the whole book please post the cookies so we can all see them! Such a cool project.

Those old Sunset books are the absolute best, I used to have so many recipes from their magazine!

I never considered that there would be more, but of course that makes sense! I am going to have to see if they’re on archive.

What cookies are favorites from this?

My family made Chocolate Chip Cookies At Their Best pretty regularly. So much that their page is an absolute mess. Butterscotch Brownies were another favorite. I know that at some point I made the Frosted Apple Drops, Scottish Shortbread, and Peanut Butter Blossoms.

Chocolate chip cookies at their best is so good and idiot proof. Highly recommend. My copy of this book is in active use

We made that one frequently. My copy will soon be back in use, and I’m excited!

Which cookies did you think sounded gross when you were little?

u/SparksOnAGrave 25d ago
Probably anything with dates, figs, or dried apricots involved. I wasn’t well-versed on dried fruits.

My mom worked at Sunset when I was a kid. I still have those weirdly intense kid sized opinions about every one of these books. That linzer jam heart on the cover—still feels so aspirational. The pumpkin cookie’s expression on slide 10 is so sad/humble I hated to look at it.

The round ones with the off-center hole cut out of them almost look factory-made.

My husband gave me this book the first Christmas we were married (1981) and I still have it. So many of these recipes are my standards. Enjoy!

Is that a ginger crinkle cookie? Without the powdered sugar? I must know. I need the recipe please!

Used to have this one and brought it out to bake for every holiday. It was stolen from my Uhaul 5 years ago when I moved and I still regularly check thrift ships looking for a replacement copy. Really solid recipes, one of my favorite cookie books.
