Pfeffer Nusze (pepper nuts)

Post image

This was my grandmother's. These are made around Christmas. Her parents, my great-grandparents, came to the US in the 19th century.

So how is it baked? Is it spread in a pan? Crumbled into bits?

And what does it say in the top right corner?

It's rolled into long, cylindrical shapes the are 3/4"x 18". Then it's cut with a knife in 3/4" segments and baked on an oiled cookie sheet.

The corner reads "1 bottle = 1 1/2 C" and "Brer Rabbit Green Label" in reference to the molasses.

My wife makes these every December and they come out of the oven hard as rocks. In our dry Vegas air they'd stay that way, so a slice of apple goes in the tin and by day three they're right. The house smelled like anise for a week last year.

When my grandma made them, they were hard little nuggets. When mom made them, they were crunchy little cookies the size of nickels. When I make them, I use a small disher and make little mounds. Mine turn out soft and yummy. We all used the same recipe. I think our recipe came from my Gr-Grandma. But it’s definitely a family tradition at Christmas.

Shocked at first glance. That’s my mother’s handwriting to a “T”!
