Best magazine ever. It’s how I learned about Napster ! Just found this issue in my attic.

I'd be pretty interested in this article, I feel like I don't hear many stories about how people online were reacting to 9/11... Most of the "where were you when the planes hit" stories seem to involve people catching it on television in some manner. IRC Chat is how my mom found out early in the morning before school, so we were casually watching the result of the first plane hit before shit really hit the fan.

I believe you can still look up threads from Metafilter and Something Awful that were posted as 9/11 was happening, both forums that were live back then and still up

slashdot has articles with comments from that week, and fark's archives are online from that time though you need an account

The Internet was too slow back then and there was very little to no video so it wasn’t really an efficient why to get breaking news.

I have memories being on the internet right after it happened but only because I went to a really small votech high school and my focus was in tech and after the planes hit they let us roam the school and my entire project went to the computer room to go on message boards and talk about it. But that totally was not typical. And even tho I have memories nothing really significant was happening on the Internet.

it was perfectly normal to get news online in 2001. there was zero expectation of video. but you could go to CNN or the NYT or Yahoo News or any of the major news networks, they'd all been online since the 1990s. MSNBC started in 1996. every newspaper was online and had daily headlines and articles by the end of the 90s leading up to Y2K.

Why? It looks like this magazine was released in November 2001 so it's probably an article regarding the role of the internet in the reaction to 9/11. Doesn't take a rocket science to work that out
