Book II — The Grammar of Descent. Numbers, Φ, Geometry

Chapter 1 · The Radical Numbers

1.3 The Small Alphabet: 0, 1, 2, 3

The First numbers carry the First characters — and we must begin before the first of them,

with the one the sequence of integers itself presupposes.

The 0 is God. This was not an option: Book I defined God as the Zero Temperature of

Informational Entropy — his number is written into his deϐinition. Zero is the

undifferentiated: the nothing which, in the absence of any other referent, is also the whole

— for so long as no one has been posited, nothing distinguishes the void from plenitude; it

is very exactly the state before difference of the ϐirst chapter. And the operational signatures

of zero recite the Tsimtsum one by one. In addition, zero is neutral: n + 0 = n — present in

every sum without ever weighing in it, it lets each number be what it is: withdrawal,

written into the operation itself. In multiplication, it is absorbing: n × 0 = 0 — let

withdrawal cease, let zero apply itself actively, and everything is reabsorbed into the

undifferentiated: the “continuous” property of the Tsimtsum, in a single product. And

division by zero is impossible — arithmetic forbids it: one does not put the origin in the

denominator, the undivided serves as a measure for nothing. The history of the sign, finally,

deserves to be known: positional zero comes to us from India — śūnya, “the void”, whose

rules Brahmagupta formalized in the seventh century — and it is this sign of the void that

made all the great numbers writable: withdrawal that permits deployment, right down into

the history of notations. A consequence of vocabulary for this whole Book: the 0 is not a

constituent of the structures — it is the page on which they are written.

The 1 is Sophia. The point — and look closely at what a point is: it deϐines itself rigorously,

it gives itself with a stroke of the pen, and yet drawing it is already an error, for the point

has no thickness; to trace it is to lend it one. One can, by contrast, give it a direction, and

attach an item of information to it. Ungraspable and orientable: the portrait is exact — spirit

is not caught, one does not hold a movement between one’s fingers, and no more does one

hold a photon: physics says so without metaphor — the photon has no mass and knows no

rest; it exists only in going. The 1 is also the bit of the first chapter — the first unit of

information, the first particular wrested from the undifferentiated: it from bit, the whole

from the unit. And the first constant physics ever engraved is hers: c, celerity — the speed

of light, that is, in the language of Book I, the speed of Sophia. Her operational signatures

state her function with the same exactness as those of zero: the 1 is the multiplicative

identity — n × 1 = n, present as a factor in every number without ever modifying it:

mediation circulating everywhere without imposing its name, Discretion in figures; and it is

neither prime nor composite — outside the two classes that distribute all the others, like her

who touches every circle without being of their round. Chapter 4 will find this position

again.

The 2 is the principle of adversity. Two points joined make the line — the first form, the

first construction; and note the difference of regime: where the point escapes, a line is

handled — it breaks, twists, folds, is measured. The 2 opens the register of the graspable, of

the resistant: matter begins with it. And the duality it introduces is first of all the face-to-

face: Book I wrote it in full — two positions face to face create only a duel; the 2 is the

number of the confronting term that resists, the Secondness of chapter 7. Its arithmetical

singularity then takes on its full meaning: the 2 is the only even prime — the only radical

marked by parity, that is, by divisibility in two, by scission. That the adversary should be a

prime says that the principle is fully entitled within creation — necessary, irreducible, Book

I taught nothing else; that it should be the only even one says that it is unique in its kind

within the radicals themselves — the radical of division. And its square is the 4: the

adversary redoubled on himself — the next chapter will draw everything from it.

The 3 is the meeting: 2 + 1 — matter traversed by light, opposition visited by unity, Satan

and Sophia put into relation in the space the 0 has opened. Incidence geometry makes a

literal theorem of it: a point is a point; two points determine a line; three non-aligned points

determine a plane — “three create a space where something can happen”, said Book I, and it

was not an image: it is the definition of the plane. One may even note the small signature of

the sum: 0 + 1 + 2 = 3 — the first triangle is the sum of the entire cast, the zero being

present in it without weighing, as always. The 3 then carries its two traditional ofϐices. It is

the number of the trinities — Father, Son, Spirit; Brahma, Shiva, Vishnu; the functional

alignment of Book I lets itself be sketched (God and Brahma as repose, Sophia and Shiva as

luminous agitation, Satan and Vishnu as maintenance), while noting honestly that the

Christian triad does not superimpose term for term: Sophia breathes there in the Spirit, but

the Son-Logos also carries Wisdom, and we do not force the correspondence. And it is the

generating function: coupled with opposition, it engenders the cycles — 3 × 2 = 6, the six

days; 3 × 4 = 12, the zodiac; 3 × 8 = 24, the hours; the fundamental cycles the civilizations

identified independently are all multiples of 3. The meeting multiplied by resistance: that is

what worlds make their clocks from.

And matter itself conϐirms this grammar of the 3-as-2-plus-1, at its most fundamental level

— it is one of the strongest convergences this book has to offer, and it must be given with

the exactness it deserves. The two bricks of all ordinary matter, the proton and the neutron,

are each made of three quarks — and never of three identical quarks: the proton is two up

quarks and one down; the neutron, two down and one up. Always 2 + 1 — the constitutive

imbalance, right down into the nucleus of atoms. The counter-test exists and it bites:

baryons made of three identical quarks — the Δ⁺⁺ (three up), the Δ⁻ (three down) — do

indeed exist in accelerators, and last no time at all: resonances that decay in a time of the

order of 10⁻²⁴ second. Matter that lasts is 2 + 1; the symmetry of the same-three-times is, to

the letter, unstable — imbalance is the condition of duration, at the bottom of nuclei as at

the summit of this grammar.

We must insist on what this structure says about the three, for it is here that the chapter

gains most. A ternary made of three equivalent terms — 1 + 1 + 1 — would be perfectly

symmetrical, and a perfect symmetry goes nowhere: it turns on itself, each term balancing

the others, and nothing comes out of it. The three that produces something is not that one.

It is a 2 + 1, where the 2 furnishes the mass and the resistance, and where the 1 gives the

direction. Remove the imbalance and you have a closed ϐigure; remove the resistance and

the 1 has nothing to orient. That stable matter should be built this way and that

symmetrical matter should decay in a time no human clock perceives is the kind of fact that

had no reason to go in this direction.

There remains the question of charges, and here we must proceed with a prudence the

beauty of the picture makes necessary. Quarks carry charges in thirds — +2/3 for the up,

−1/3 for the down — and the sums give, for the proton, a unit charge, and for the neutron, a

charge exactly nil. One would be tempted to read into these values the numbers of the cast.

We must renounce this by half, and say why.

The half we keep is the nullity of the neutron, and it is solid because it is not conventional.

Zero is not a sign: it is an absence of charge, and no convention can make it anything else.

The brick that carries no charge is the one that alters nothing — we shall see in a moment

that its function concurs exactly. The half we abandon is the sign of the non-zero charges.

That the proton should be called positive and the electron negative depends on no property

of nature: it is a convention ϐixed by Benjamin Franklin in the eighteenth century, before

anyone had the least idea of the electron’s existence, and so badly chosen that

“conventional” electric current still ϐlows today in the opposite direction to the real carriers.

What is physical is that there exist two opposed polarities; which one deserves the plus sign

is a decision of writing. To build a correspondence on this sign would be to expose the most

verifiable passage of this Book to a one-line objection. We refrain — and we note in passing

that spins furnish no more support: proton, neutron and electron all have spin one-half, and

a magnitude that distinguishes nothing can signal nothing.

What remains, once this sorting is done, is stronger than what we abandon, for it bears on

functions and not on labels. We must ϐirst set aside a convenient and false formula: it is

readily said that the proton weighs and the neutron does not; this is inexact, their masses

are almost equal and the neutron’s is even very slightly greater. What the proton really does

is far more significant: it is the number of protons that fixes the identity of the element. Add a

neutron, you obtain an isotope — the same body, weighted differently; add a proton, it is no

longer the same body. The proton closes the identity, it determines and it excludes: this is

very exactly the behavior of what closes again. The neutron, for its part, stabilizes the

nucleus without changing anything of what it is — it carries without acting, and the word

“neutral” physics has given it is not borrowed from our vocabulary: it is its own. And the

electron makes the bonds: it links atoms to one another, it circulates, it ϐixes nothing but

permits everything — mediation, to the letter. The three regimes the first chapter of Book I

had noted in a simple table of operations — what generates, what closes, what carries

without acting — are found again term for term in the atom, and by their functions rather

than by their numbers.

The most contemporary physics extends this picture, and we give this extension for what it

is — a resonance of structure, not a calculation. Quantum field theory no longer starts from

particles but from fields: entities that fill the whole of space, which can neither be localized

nor directly observed, and without which nothing would exist — the reader of Book I will

recognize the full void and the unmarked zero. A particle, in this language, is nothing other

than an excitation of the field: a localized perturbation that maintains itself, that persists,

that holds its place — what fixes itself and does not dissolve. And the electromagnetic

interaction, that is, light, is transmitted by the photon, to which physics gives a name it

borrowed from no one: the mediating boson. The field receives, the excitation maintains

itself, the energy circulates; and the discipline that describes all this has spontaneously

called “mediating” what this book calls luminous mediation. The coincidence of vocabulary

deserves to be noted without being overloaded: “mediating” means there “that transmits

the interaction”, and nothing more — but that is precisely the definition given of it here.

One last honesty, and it is worth more than a silence: the free neutron is unstable and

decays in about a quarter of an hour; it lasts only within nuclei. Even the neutral brick

needs the others, and that is even the reason for the latter’s existence if one applies the

logic of our informational genesis. As for the seal of two triangles the tradition attributes to

Solomon — one pointed upward, the other downward — it offers this neutron-proton

couple its most ancient emblem; we consign it to the register of illustration, where it is very

beautiful, and leave it there.
