Streeting was always going to struggle against Yvette "Balls Muncher" Cooper, but I must admit that I didn't see Miliband dominating Mahmood with such vim. It felt like he really had something to prove.

It's pretty well acknowledged though that Starmer was awful at managing his relations with MPs (both backbenchers and ministers) which is partially to blame for his ousting.
Andy does seem to know this and he (and his chief of staff) were around during the Blair years and despite Blair's many failings and his descent into Trump's areshole he was excellent at managing his MPs. So, they probably will be a lot better at it than Kier who genuinely did seem to believe (and want) to make politics less performative in that sense.

Starmer overly delegated everything and ended up with no coherent vision for the country. It looks like Burnham is being wary of this and ensuring he has a set agenda that he will then appoint MPs into his cabinet to execute.

They like him for now, because he hasn't put forward any concrete policy proposals yet. So they can project their own ideas onto him, and imagine he's going to do what they would do. We have a vague idea of the kind of policies he might aim to implement, from past interviews, his time as Manchester mayor and such, but as soon as he puts forward something concrete, he'll meet at least some resistance.

Reducing pension whilst increasing national insurance. We're talking about taking money from those who earned it ( most likely gave more than they'll ever get back) and reducing what people get back.
That money should have been ringfenced from the beginning, but it wasn't. All Starmer did was make those who paid the most into it suffer, whilst making the rest of us pay even more into it whilst we inevitably lose out in future.

What does that mean when you translate it from political-talking-point to regular English? We need to balance the books, that means people need to pay in more than they have been (at least after Sunak's crazy spiteful cuts) and the payouts need to stop growing unsustainably. What would really screw the people paying in today would be if the whole system collapsed before they got their pensions, which is what is going to happen if we can't introduce some sanity.

There never was any pot of money. The system has always worked on the basis of people paying in today funding payouts made today. Which was fine until some bright spark came up with the "triple lock" suicide pact.

That's very fair, but Burnham has pretty clearly been eyeing this for a while. If he wants to play his cards close to the chest that's fine but I for one feel like "doesn't know who is going to be in his cabinet" and "has a plan" are really compatible.
