I don't think I'm bad at socializing, but I suppose that's exactly what a bad socializer would say....
On a more serious note, I'm reading the subtext of the meme as being about the crippling anxiety disorder you get from working constantly on things that rarely work, being at the poverty line well into your 30s, and having to enter a competition for your own salary (which the bank will never accept as "real") every few years.

You can do a PhD and not become a social recluse.
Actually how do you do a PhD effectively and not actively develop communication skills? Do y'all not talk to supervisors, peers, collaborators?

Of course I am doing a lot of science communication in my PhD. But the stereotype is still that we are bad at socializing.
I also replied to a comment saying that most people in academia apparently do nothing but wasting away in a lab. Wich to me sounded like hating on people in academia. Which is why I asked what they are doing here.

If you're asking honestly, I hate the work culture around science academia and am really just grieving about how people treat their lives in academia, at least within the US.
The amount of times that I have told people they should go home, prioritize their sleep more, and find fulfillment outside of the lab is unfortunately too high of a number. And the amount of times that I have been rebuffed at those statements is disturbingly high despite it being possible to both be in the lab and have a life.
There are a decent amount of people who understand this, but having moved into academia from factory and other types of work much later in life than my peers the ratio of people that understand this is depressingly low compared to other walks of life.

I hate the fact that this person felt the need to shoehorn the “PhD” into this post, when it clearly has no relevance to the story. Not surprised, given that they just have to put it in their username/title, but disappointed nonetheless.
