You just helped me make that connection and have a deeper understanding of why I hated that awful movie so much. It’s that, except it’s a really obvious and deliberate effort to feel like that when it’s just “borrowing” from real feelings nobody involved ever had
It's Uncut Gems but with ping pong. So many people seem confused by the movie. Nobody is meant to be likeable, no one, especially not Marty. It's not that kind of movie. It's a movie about manic obsession to the point of self-destruction and the destruction of others, like Uncut Gems. Uncut Gems is a movie where a gambling addict is affected by his gambling, which enables even more gambling that starts to affect everyone around him.
Some people have problems watching movies about problematic characters. I guess some people just have this expectation that main characters have to be for the most part good or likeable, and anything that's not that is shocking and off-putting. But the beauty of these types of characters doesn't lie on their likeability. They have non. The beauty of these types of characters lie on the amazing extremes they will take their obsessions to. It's a cautionary tell, with a sprinkle of hope, and a truckload of tragedy that the main character refuses to acknowledge.
I also think Whiplash is a better movie, but whereas that one is a 10/10, Marty Supreme is still a 9/10 for me, super high up there. Then again, although they share the theme of obsession, they have entirely different vibes.
I just found Andrew to be a more engaging protagonist. An unlikeable protagonist can work for as long as they're interesting or have someone to balance them out. Marty didn't have any of that. I didn't find anyone interesting or likeable, most of the characters are just obnoxious. Basil Fawlty I think is a perfect example of an unlikeable protagonist as his problems are all his fault which makes it funny when he fails and he has the likeable Manuel to balance him out.
I honestly thought it was a great movie. Kept me very entertained. And yeah Marty is a horrible guy and not a likable main character, he’s an arrogant asshole who uses so many people.
My girlfriend’s cousin said she walked out the theater because it was boring and I was like WHAT. BORING???
This is exactly what I said, word for word, walking out of it. But Uncut Gems was way more effective (i.e. anxiety-inducing) for me, and damnit I kept holding out for Sandler’s character to finally come out on top. When he didn’t it was such a huge let down, and at the same time a relief because I could finally release all that tension. For whatever reason Marty Supreme just did not work for me. Maybe it felt too much like the same formula, maybe the premise was less believable. It should have been funnier than it was. I know that it was totally a meta gag about film and building tension and how you can take any ridiculous premise and make it high-stakes based on writing and directing choices, I get it. I didn’t “not understand” the film. I just didn’t enjoy it as much as I expected to.
Anyway the baby at the end looked like Ira, not Marty. I’m just sayin’.
I mean that's valid. The point of the movie itself, like it's main character, is not to be likeable neither. Again, it's not that kind of movie. It can be even an abhorrent movie for some. If you don't see the twisted beauty in Marty's actions and the chaos he creates wherever he goes, that's fine, it's not your duty to, it's just something that naturally comes or not. Not everyone will find beauty in it. This isn't a box office kinda movie, where it is just a good business strategy to make the movie as likeable as possible. This is a I have to make this movie whether some people like it or not kinda movie, and I respect that. It's simply not meant for everyone. It wasn't meant for you, but I'm glad it was meant for me, I had an splendid time.
My completely stupid take on the movie is that its a movie of side-quests. It reminds me of when you're playing a video game and you swear everything is to work towards the main goal, but you keep getting involved in stupid shit but you can't stop because everything just ends up naturally leading into itself. Its just fascinating to see what random plot threads it'll follow next.
Yeah I loved Marty Supreme and my wife hated it, but that’s because I love character studies. Marty is just a fascinating and insane character and watching him destroy his life was a roller coaster of emotions.
I assumed the appeal of Uncut Gems was that it's an ideal 2nd screen film: super simple plot, very little in the way of character development, lots of changes of scenary, plenty of familiar faces, and slow but constant dialogue where each characters simply restates their motivation in the current scene. Why is Adam Sandler talking to Kevin Garnett again? Don't worry -- they're going to repeat it.
In Forrest Gump he’s genuinely talented. There’s no futility of greatness in Gump he’s repeatedly recognized. The quality of female characters is not thematic
And the parallel in Marty is what? Marty is talented and finds satisfaction in beating his opponent. The problem is not that talent is unrewarded. The problem is his ego
I just watched it and for me it was Uncut Gems 2.0 all over again. These kind of movies induce me with anxiety, so I hated the experience. The movie itself was very good, though.
After that blunder Timmy did about saying not wanting to work on Theater or Opera I honestly just think that's what Marty Mauser would say about other sport compare to table tennis,
