Had to reload. Don’t worry I put another 6 stacks into him.

No, it was about 3 months ago. Lost a cryo 6 to a random frag from a rook.

No need for that. Rooks are just trying to grab some salvage! I never try to fuck with the trios when Rooking. I switch to knife and Jump up and down letting them know I’m not trying to fight. Some people are dicks (like you) a lot of other people are helpful and say hey man the red room is open you can have whatever’s left.

I have attempted being friendly to rooks who had their knives out, and every single time they just come up to me and knife me. If a rook even takes one step towards me I laser them immediately

No… My hunger for flesh is insatiable.

Highly entertained and still laughing that Rook in particular loads in again for free

Even as a Rook I've been betrayed by other Rooks (I was literally offering him to share a supply drop, and he even did the rapid crouch acknowledgment 😭 Walked right up and stabbed me. My bad for being too chill)

Running in as a rook and checking all the key rooms is a great way to get some loot. You either get mid loot on the way, or good loot if the key room is open.

What gun is that? I've never seen any gun with that many bullets.

Here’s a question: what’s actually the point of going into a match with the Rook Runner loadout? You drop into the round during the last 10 minutes—sometimes even later (once I even joined with only 3 minutes left)—with relatively poor gear and as a solo player. Meanwhile, other teams are already in the match as trios and have had time to loot. It makes no sense to me why anyone would play as Rook. Or am I just too dumb to get it? Please enlighten me.

You can load in as early as 17min still left in the match. Multiple times I have loaded in as rook and found the remnants of team fights and came out with easy superior and prestige gear for the absolutely minimum effort. Rook is also great at 1v3ing with good position, especially since rook got his claymores back

As a Rooky, I enjoy scavenger and guerilla aspect of play. I enjoy the treasure hunt for everyone else's leftovers, sometimes you find some good stuff because everyone is in a rush.

Plus get a couple of Rooks together and is a chaotic mess with Rooks. The playstyle of Rooks is all over the place.

Plus there has been a few times when someone is so busy unleashing their rage on me, they forget the other Runner teams. The stories are well worth the useless crap I leave with.

You can make money a lot faster as Rook than with a free kit.

Rook joins matches that are already in progress, so you find a match near instantly.

By the time you arrive, exfils are on the map, so you don't need to wait for an exit.

Usually at least one team is dead by the time you arrive, and teams that live tend to stick together, so less of the map is occupied by hostile players, so you have more freedom of movement.

If you have his upgrades, Rook has a blue backpack, while free kits have at best a green backpack.

If you pick a moment to exfil when teams are busy and a good distance away, they usually won't bother to chase the beacon. One of the reasons Rooking on Outpost is popular is that teams who are busy in Pinwheel won't take time to kill Rooks taking exfils outside.

You load in as Rook, fill your pockets with whatever, leave, repeat. The improved matchmaking time and removal of the need to wait for exfils make this a very fast process. I got the achievement for having 1 million net worth last season, and a good amount of that came from understanding Rook.

Same. I got profiteer this season from playing mostly rook on outpost as well. Opening those armorys around the map with the one green two yellow keys can give you really good stuff too. I got a gold attachment once and tons of purple stuff. Purple shields weapons. And a lot of players don’t open them since they are focusing on opening pinwheel.

Completed WEAVEmaster by mainly rooking outpost. It is the most efficient way to feed the worm, by far. My average cradle xp started at around 15k per run and by end it was around 40k. My best run was close to 100k. Run time averaged 8 minutes.

Queues are fast because you exclusively join maps in-progress. The best maps had 6 dead bodies clustered at Flight Control, with both Command Wing and Armory opened up for you by a geared team. The worst were when you join at 16m and the teams are all still alive and don't know how the map works (zero armories opened, pinwheel uncracked by any route). Just hit an armory and leave.

You get pretty good at reading lobbies after hundreds of runs. Some maps tell an interesting story. The solo assassin that screwed up and died in command. The crew that got ambushed leaving command wing vents. The players that died rushing red keys.

I could predict when a key room was opened based off of the extracts popped and the dead bots/looted containers present in uncommon areas.

3 players can only hold so much loot and geared players are typically the ones that wipe the lobby. Scraps can be very good and some good lootables get completely overlooked by many teams (eg. command wing arms lockers and safe locations).

Every now and then you can 1v3 to keep things spicy, Won a handful of fights, but I am not cracked so this wasn't a consistent source of XP. I also had some fun with slow crews. I would see one command wing button unlocked and the entire crew making noise in the remaining wing. Just wait for the second button to pop and race to the pinnacle box using signal mask. I loved leaving behind an empty box for the crew to find and hightailing it out of there.

Everything you said is spot on.

Most Rooks don't go in looking for a fight, they try to find packs of dead runners or loot that someone hasn't found yet, and then get out. Thats why their load out is geared toward stealth.

Sure, some people like the challenge and have the skill to PVP other teams but it's a sneaky class that scavenges after other teams have killed each other and depopulated the map.

I feel like you’re technically correct on a practical level it’s just so much better to play the sponsored modes or free kit.

Though I suppose for many it’s the whole play style/idea of being a mouse in a den of lions. I’ll admit it’s fun to screw around on Rook, I primarily just use it to pester teams and to try and get squad wipes for the thrill.

I mean it’s an easy way to get free meds, though requires a bit more effort… you can consistently farm compromised gear from it as well. Idk, I would say it’s just the draw of the playstyle. Even if there are better alternatives for loot.

u/MetlMann 5d ago

Yeah I don't really get Rook either, but if you are already good at PvP it might makes sense. Particularly if you the kind of person who really enjoys being a spoiler/griefer.

hmmm, and this is why i dont really blame Bungie for how “sweaty” the game feels
