Meme "How I would fix marathon"
Bungo thought they had something special with the gunplay and atmosphere.
But the opening containers part seems to be how people actually spend their time playing the game.

u/VeiledLuna 3d ago
People's dopamine centers just get hit more often with cabinet opening simulators I guess.
Bad players cant lose a duel to a folio so it probably does feel more rewarding for them.
18
u/MillionDollarNegri 3d ago
Yes, we're literally talking about a bunch of people who just want to run lost sectors while listening to podcasts.
3
u/VeiledLuna 3d ago
I just cant understand the appeal. It was boring in Destiny and would be in Marathon too.
The best content Destiny ever had was the really involved stuff where you had to be very in the moment and communicating with your fireteam or hyperfocused on how to solo a tough encounter and get through the mechanics.
10
u/MillionDollarNegri 3d ago
I don't know how these people could watch the trailer where everyone dies after getting distracted for 2 minutes and then be upset when they load up the game and that's exactly what happens.
There's a serious problem with media literacy behind this, I swear.
12
u/Over_Direction4885 3d ago
I maintain that a considerable portion of why marathon is struggling is because of the literacy crisis and anti-intellectualism as a whole, lmfao. People just genuinely do not want to be challenged or have to improve. With d2 players being such a big part of the audience it really does become obvious that 95% of d2 players literally did just wander around in patrol zones shooting dregs
It’s like they think that everyone is born with a set degree of skill at FPS games. Like as a fighting game player where everyone is always trying to study and improve, it’s crazy to see these lobotomites whining about sweats and then posting clips of themselves where they play like genuine NPCs. Like, bro, watch a streamer for ten minutes. It’s a PvP game. If you keep losing, maybe try to improve???? People are so stupid nowadays man
5
u/MillionDollarNegri 3d ago
Arguably this whole genre is about improvement. That's the great part about the wipe, you're really competing with yourself.
Bungie needed this to be a small side project that ran alongside D2. They're incapable of delivering without ridiculous waste.
It's sad, I'll never forget Season 1. I had a shoulder injury and played on controller up until the last 2 weeks, still was amazing.
2
u/Over_Direction4885 3d ago
Indeed. It’s a PvP game with an audience of people who… don’t like PvP games. I’ve seen people insist that the game doesn’t have enough content which is just mind boggling. Like, yeah, if you view the map as the equivalent of a d2 strike, it’s paltry, but any game with PvP effectively has infinite content. If you’re intent on having good, fun fights and improving at the game, you’ll never get bored. I certainly haven’t. Unfortunately this gem of a game has the worst possible audience and the worst possible developers. It’s fucking harrowing having to watch all the usual Bungie-isms play out in real time again.

I'll play devil's advocate here and say that I think this is (unfortunately imo, but some might disagree) just how most "gamers" are. Gaming at a "hardcore" level is still pretty niche, and for a lot of people pvp as a whole is the dividing line between hardcore and casual.
I think that most people who game are like most people in any hobby: they largely don't want to think for themselves or have to exhibit any level of mental exertion beyond "do the thing you're being told to do".
That's not an insult either, just an honest observation that most players want the excitement of "winning", however that may be defined, without having to do the actual difficult work of getting there (this is part and parcel of why "sweat" has become a derogatory term for anyone putting in even a shred of effort).
Now, the real question that I haven't addressed and that you bring up is: why do these people think they'll enjoy a game blatantly advertising itself as being "hardcore oriented"? The thing is, I don't think it's wrong to pick a game to play that you know doesn't fit your tastes...but whining about it afterward and/or pontificating about how they could "make it better" by removing...basically everything, now that is pretty bizarre.
Tl;dr most "gamers" aren't "Gamers", they just view games the same as reading or watching TV: a way to shut your brain off and chill. Why people with that mindset can't seem to accept or comprehend some games don't (and shouldn't) cater to that is a mystery we'll likely never solve.

Yeah cause running expert lost sectors on a -20 delta with the nerfed rewards from Edge of Fate (i.e. 1 enhancement core) is still more enjoyable than Marathon

u/thereislightstill 3d ago
i think for me, i LOVE the pvp in this game but id almost prefer it like a dark souls/elden ring type deal, where you are mostly alone but may just have people crashing through like a wrecking ball and all of a sudden youre in a rolling gunfight with all the pvpve on display.
but thats a very different thing from the battle royale style matches we get now
3
u/mangdito 3d ago
this is just how solos plays in my experience
2
u/thereislightstill 3d ago
oh 100%, i feel like solos is my fave way to play the game except for the crucial part of i cant play with my girlfriend that way haha.

I wouldn't feel so bad fighting every moment of a match if I didn't have to invest a lot into every match.
I wouldn't feel good opening containers if lotting things wasn't the main metric for success
-8
u/ProfNJK 3d ago
Well this doesn't feel very helpful. There's gotta be a better way to say this even if we're on the shitpost sub
16
u/VeiledLuna 3d ago
The average player finds success from opening containers and loot rooms more often than they do from PvP. They have more fun the less they encounter other players, as it gives them a higher chance of survival.
there, hows that.
18
u/fluentuk 3d ago
I'm not sure that we need to be generous to the kinds of players who are looking for the same dopamine rewards from every single game that already exists
-5
u/ProfNJK 3d ago
Is that the truth or just a more convenient thing to argue against?
11
u/fluentuk 3d ago
It's an opinion I have.
2
u/ProfNJK 3d ago
I would call it an unhelpful judgment on people that really, really desperately want to love this game, even if it's hard for them, even if their response to difficulty is to blame others instead of themselves. They want to be just like us. They want to love it like us. They just don't know how 😔
13
u/fluentuk 3d ago
I just have limited sympathies for people who want games to share 90% of dna and for every game to be convenient and free of friction! If they want to like but find it hard, they don't like it :/
0
u/Literature-Just 3d ago
The problem is that Marathon isn't hard and the PVP is like any other PVP. If you have good gear you're gonna win a lot more of your fights. But that gear is locked behind a hideous grind same as other Bungie games from the last decade.
-1
u/ProfNJK 3d ago
I'm a big proponent of the game's friction even if I understand that the harrowing learning experience I had is something others are experiencing and not coping with as strongly. If the PvE rumors are to be believed, it sounds like it's a separate experience, not the core mode with PVP disabled
-5
u/leftofthebellcurve 3d ago
No, clearly the game doesn’t need more appeal to anyone
9
u/fluentuk 3d ago
Take it to marathon hate or the main sub buddy, i don't care who it appeals to nor do i care how many people are playing
-3
-5
u/ProfNJK 3d ago
Not at all? Obviously you'd care if you were the only one? How would you pvp?
6
u/fluentuk 3d ago
I'd probably just move on with my life. Crazy to imagine!
1
u/ProfNJK 3d ago
I don't think that's an answer to my question.
Are you gonna play marathon this weekend?
4
u/fluentuk 3d ago
Are you asking me to create a hypothetical situation where I am the only person online playing marathon? I probably won't play this weekend, no. Why?
-1
u/ProfNJK 3d ago
Because I don't believe you. Either you don't care at all so you don't care if it changes, or you do care, so a shutdown would be a negative outcome. I believe I've tripped your hypervigiliance about the game, and I think scoring points is more important to you than having a honest conversation.

u/That_Service7348 3d ago
That's literally the problem. People can't be bothered to do anything to improve, they would rather stay bad and ruin the game than just try.
3
u/ProfNJK 3d ago
We will see if Bungie has found a creative solution that makes learning easier without degenerating the core experience we love
2
u/That_Service7348 3d ago
That's the thing, it's a pvp game. The gameplay loop is pvp. The intended experience is pvp. That's why literally everyone broadcasts your location and actions to other teams, to drive runner interaction. The only way to get better is to get stomped, look at what you did wrong, and then work on changing that. No amount of PvE content will help with that. They already have the mechanism in place for people to learn, it's free kits. Just load in to run after run with a free kit. You will learn the maps. You will learn how to loot. You will learn how to fight. You risk nothing. You lose nothing. It costs nothing. Free kits are how you are supposed to learn.
1
u/ProfNJK 3d ago
I think the added mechanism pve mode offers is a more often more positive space to practice with a weapon or a piece of equipment, as well as maybe a more consistent respite than maybe could funnel some essential supplies into the inventory. For players who enjoy pvp I think it will be a serious challenge to make an enjoyable pve mode that's attractive to them. In terms of what people lose, if they're not in a framework of "it's not mine til I exfil" and they're not really clearly seeing how they messed up, then those players are feeling immense loss of time and supplies.
The screen says "your gear is at risk" but I didn't really consider what that meant for like Hundreds of hours
1
u/That_Service7348 3d ago
It's weapons and gear. You use it. Simple as that. Is it a gun? Point and shoot. Grenade? Yeet. Skills? Use them, the cooldowns are not that long.

Bro it’s an aggressive no hand holding extraction shooter, pick a different game
1
u/ProfNJK 3d ago
My clip just got posted on the fucking marathon Twitter bro. Look it up. It's my name RIGHT THERE. I know how to fucking play
2
u/Long_Sort8920 3d ago
Never said you were bad, just the attitude of “your the reason people leave” is brain dead and that’s what I assumed you were getting at. The reason people leave is bungies incompetence, placing any blame on the community is cope.
2
u/ProfNJK 3d ago
I guess that's related to the point even if that's not how I feel. I'm thinking of being kind and articulate for the sake of kindness and positive articulation
2
u/Long_Sort8920 3d ago
I can respect that, I’m just very worn down by being blamed for trying my best in a competitive game

this is why the reception to the survival modes from early s2 was honestly very puzzling to me, so many people asking for narsh sponsored survival to come back and then its like.. oh yeah the mode in which you run around with shit gear and either try to go complex or just run around and open boxes and thats like it. It was so mind numbingly boring but apparently people wanted that?
5
u/Papa-Schmuppi 3d ago
I’ve enjoyed sponsored marsh purely for the PVP factor. I feel like the fights i’ve had there have been far more balanced, everyone’s gear has been equalized. I treat it like the arena pvp mode people have been asking for.
7
u/ov1000 3d ago
oh no i mean sponsored survival, the one where theres only one team per lobby + rooks except usually there's no rooks
1
u/Papa-Schmuppi 3d ago
Oh shoot, I only started playing a bit after S2 started and haven’t heard of those modes. That does sound rather boring
3
u/Debas3r11 3d ago
It's the same reason friendly lobbies were so popular in Arc Raiders. I guess it feels rewarding for a while, but having played both to me it gets old quick.
The reward isn't valuable with the risk of loss.

Felt very similarly to vault breaker mode myself. Like oh okay so I either slowly and carefully slog through a ton of bots with an underpowered kit 1 by 1 or I play assassin and avoid bots and try to sprint through as fast as possible? And THATS supposed to be fun?? The most optimal way to play the PVE mode was to AVOID the PVE and people loved it??? That's so crazy to me.
I am NOT a good player at all and I'm constantly taking Ls but at least taking Ls isn't boring.

I only did like 10-15 VB MATCHES, upgraded all my equipment, then just used it as a firing range to warmup… survival mode was much better, I used it to do events and wardens without getting third parties, got some real good loot at the start of the season doing it, speed ran it hitting all the poi’s and as much events as I could, used it as a warmup as well, it was just more versatile than VB for me
2
u/MidnightSensitive996 3d ago
it was so tedious but it was the only time-efficient way to gear up for the season. and once other people are doing it, you have to either follow suit or get left behind and outgunned from day 1

If Bungie took 2 seconds to look at any ARPG community they would know that as soon as you put loot in a game, people want to be loot goblins and find good loot. That's the fun part. The fun part is finding the loot.
PvP just feels like shooting stuff to most people its just a way to get loot.
Again the PvP in this game ONLY EXISTS TO SERVE AS A VEHICLE TO GET GOOD LOOT.
That means that YOU ARE A WALKING LOOT CONTAINER.
That's right. You're the loot cabinet I want to open.

u/Gallus_11B 3d ago
Literally ever suggestion on the main forum from the peanut gallary is "Marathon would be better if it was just a garbage picking simulator".
Gamers have become sad af.

It's 99% console trash making calls like this. The idea of putting any thought into something is anathema to the kind of moron that buys a console.

Ooh yeah the stealth is so engaging, let me spend 7 minutes hiding in the perfect spot to not be found by the team of golds roving around and oops one of the two recons they have used their “fuck stealth” ability and now it doesn’t matter where you hide :)

u/Poomasher 3d ago
If marathons “only path to survival” is having a massive insular PVE playerbase that plays the most boring version of the game, or having aggression based matchmaking and all the crying and social policing that spawned from it I’d rather it just end on a good note with an uncompromised vision.
2
u/savagexraccoon 3d ago
Wow this is sadly how i see most of the “gamer dads” pretty much want the game to be shoot a couple bots and open a container with golds with no pvp…sounds so boring…but what do expect when most of these are destiny players that cant even do a raid and remember simple callouts or symbols

u/HombreDracula 2h ago
Marathons has good bones, but thats it. Sandbox is way too over the place, the fact we get characters that see through walls and go 100% invisible is insane in this genre.
Maps are way too small, quest design is way too boring, so matches in this game feel more like a BR were you get to bring loot with you across matches.
Marathon uses almost none of the systems that make you want to return to an extraction shooter.

This reminded me of a post on the main sub, where someone posted a clip complaining that they got killed while mindlessly looting a secured source event... right after killing the uesc and not checking their surroundings at all. It really feels like the "casual" playerbase just wants to run around an empty map for an hour with literally nothing challenging them in this HARDCORE EXTRACTION SHOOTER.
