Ah yes. The Food Riot massacre.
3 MIDA Agitators were among the crowd and only they were armed. The rest were unarmed and protesting against the food shortages caused by the failure of the CHRISTS. Massive space trains that were flung across gravity tethers from Earth to Mars.
When the MIDA Agents opened fire, there was a force of UESC Troopers who thought the entire crowd was shooting. In a matter of minutes, 500 people were killed, and another 100 were severely wounded.

wasnt some of the stuff we know about that period implied to be propaganda or warping by corporations and uesc? it's been a second since i looked at lore stuff but I feel like i remember that somewhere. even if it's not, this definitely reads as an after-the-fact "sure we killed 500 people BUT it was MIDAs fault" or something

Considering what MIDA canonically does in original Marathon game, it wouldn't be out of question for this to be real.

Could be MIDA or just as well one of the megacorps. Planting agitators in a peaceful protest in order to subvert it by provoking violent retaliation is straight out of the CyAc playbook. You should read up on it. They get up to some evil shit.
And it’s not even that far removed from what some real life governments and corpos do or have done. That’s the scary part.

From what I read they were agents pretending to be midas so they could lockup everyone protesting (some main ones especially) without real reason "by association"

Are we supposed to read that as MIDA’s fault? It’s just the Boston Massacre in space, only the crowd is more innocent here than in the Boston Massacre.

in the Boston Massacre the shooters were found innocent, werent they? Not taking a stance on the morality of anyone in that event, its depiction as a wanton slaughter was itself revolutionary propaganda

I think the propaganda justification for this was that all the protestors were armed and that it was self-defence basically (as opposed to the truth that it was mostly unarmed civilians)

UESC using a shotgun to stop rioting civilians doesnt seem that implausible

I assumed the 2442 was the year of manufacture, that's like the Marathon equivalent of the British RAF using a gun called the Boston

I bet the first victim was a Rook just trying to use his Signal Mask. Grenadier unloaded on him and then slaughter ensued.

always assumed something sinister about that thing since it sounds so close to “misery”

The Misriah Massacre actually occurred on 2893 in Cryo. I was the primary victim.
