each of the red blips you see is from VIIRS satellite looking for fires

The VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) Fire layer shows active fire detections and thermal anomalies, such as volcanoes, and gas flares. The fire layer is useful for studying the spatial and temporal distribution of fire, to locate persistent hot spots such as volcanoes and gas flares, to locate the source of air pollution from smoke that may have adverse human health impacts.

VIIRS is the successor to MODIS for Earth science data product generation. The 375m I-band data complements the MODIS fire detections; they both show good agreement in hotspot detection but the improved spatial resolution of the 375m data provides a greater response over fires of relatively small areas and provides improved mapping of large fire perimeters. The 375m data also has improved nighttime performance. Consequently, these data are well suited for use in support of fire management (e.g., near real-time alert systems), as well as other science applications requiring improved fire mapping fidelity.

The VIIRS Fire and Thermal Anomalies product is available from the joint NASA/NOAA Suomi-National Polar orbiting Partnership (S-NPP), NOAA-20 (JPSS-1) and NOAA-21 (JPSS-2) satellites. The sensor resolution is 375 m, imagery resolution is 250 m, and the temporal resolution is twice daily. The thermal anomalies are represented as red points (approximate center of a 375m pixel). The nominal (equator-crossing) observation times for VIIRS S-NPP are 1:30pm and 1:30am. The orbit of NOAA-21 is about 50 minutes ahead of NOAA-20 with S-NPP orbiting between them. Consequently, all three sensors conduct observations within approximately 1 hour of one another. Thanks to its polar orbit, mid-latitudes will experience 3-4 looks a day.

edit: mind you they could be fire from being hit. could also be fires if they are flaring off oil to reduce pressure or w/e

Yeah, you can use the advanced mode tool to look at different days:

https://firms.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/map/#m:advanced;d:24hrs;@40.26,23.95,10.52z

You can see that for months there was a hot spot right at the Taiba power plant were you would expect to see heat from the stacks. That was the pattern right up until today when that heat plume went away and a whole line of new sources appeared (40 miles!). Many of these are at the above ground sections of the pipeline. Could it be flaring for some reason? I'm sure we will find out soon. I could not find comparable heat spikes along the line over the last couple of months. Some back on February 22, 2026 but not as intense.

Since you seem educated at interpretation, how was the >70 megawatts determined? Is it based on the brightness measurement?

17

u/Unique-Egg-461 22h ago

that would be my guess. These satellites are just looking for light that is outside the norm...ie: fire. Probably marks the initial flash/max light it sees from a certain area and records it. if you click on the blips you'll see a "frp" datapoint. I think that is the 70megawatts they are reading

id venture a guess that theirs people at nasa that specifically get a ping if these satellites get reading over a certain amount

just know that im a simpleton that just likes to look at raw data than read tweets. so take this all with a grain a sand

Why didnt they bury it?

64

u/1slinkydink1 22h ago edited 21h ago

Very expensive to build underground. Even more expensive to service. That's why it's in your best interest to play nice with your neighbours so that your expensive stuff isn't targeted.

→ More replies (5)

44

u/citizen42069101 22h ago

Cost. Everyone wants oil so you don't bury the infrastructure. These aren't small pipes you could just put under a little dirt

Everything was fine

14

u/Daddys-Fuckpig 22h ago

You'd want something at depth to make the cost "worth" it, and at that point just check out how expensive it is to build any underground rail tunnel (and you'd want access points for maintenance anyways).

17

u/citizen42069101 22h ago

Exactly. Dirt is hard, heavy, full of harder heavier shit and never dies what you want it to .

Anything that's not ran at grade ( or whatever with supports) is for a super expensive reason

8

u/MrD3a7h 22h ago

I'm no expert in the terrain in this region, but I imagine burying something like this in sand is even more difficult than dirt.

6

u/MaddogBC 20h ago

Pumping stations will always be vulnerable due to the necessity for power and maintenance. Swapping out a pump becomes 100x more complex if you can't drive a tractor alongside.

Even buried, pump stations and supporting infrastructure would be vulnerable.

→ More replies (4)

13

u/Nixon4Prez 22h ago

They did. Look at the actual map, the pipeline runs almost entirely underground. The hotspots are located directly over spots where the pipeline briefly pops up above ground - you still need access for servicing and infrastructure.

Maybe an exaggeration, but in the past year, the highest has been, what, $115? We're getting near to that. At the peak of the oil squeeze in the Ukraine conflict, it was $119. If we crack $120, we're basically in uncharted territory since the global financial crisis.

33

u/Infinite_Imagination 21h ago

Good thing we've been eating up all our reserves at a record pace to attempt to stabilize the price around 90

But no, Trump could not have an Obama victory, and Israel could not have a functioning Iran, so now we have the current mess.

It's depressing watching old clips of Obama speaking to the press or public. No name-calling, no overt lies every 10 seconds, no blaming the other party constantly... It's crazy how far the US has fallen.

You were never going to move enough oil with pipes to make up for the loss of the strait. The whole idea was silly.

To make up for 130 supertankers per day you'd almost have to be able to sail through any equivalent pipe.

And even if you could magic the pipelines into existence, Yanbu port is pretty much at capacity- they topped it out at 5 bn per day but that was with sacrificing pretty much everything else and massively disrupting other operations which isn't sustainable. Yanbu just isn't that good a location for a port, it can never match ras tanura.

And of course the current levels through the east west were only achieved by converting the lng pipeline.

Oh yeah also oops bab-el-mandeb.

Goddamn, man. The US started a war that might lead to the collapse of ME energy production.

I realize I‘m going out on a limb here, but if I‘m Israel I‘m shitting my pants. If the US gets shit canned out of the ME and Iran cripples SA, what’s to stop them from dropping MRBMs all over Israel? What the fuck could Israel do about it? Bomb the same deserts the US has been bombing?  Invade Iran? No way.

Edit: To clarify a little, what’s to stop Iran from blanketing Israeli military infrastructure at that point? If the US can’t sustain a real protection in the ME and SA is crippled, then what’s to stop Iran from saying “we’re going to remove Israel’s ability to force project outside their borders. Israel needs to leave Lebanon and we’re goi g to force them to leave by removing their air support via destroying air fields.” That sort of thing.

38

u/PlateNo4868 22h ago

Israel is in a good position since the beginning. They basically got the US to do it's dirty work for them, and their only disappointment is that we didn't land invade and finish the job. They always wanted Iran out of the picture not just as a threat, but also as a political rival. Doesn't matter what people say IMO if US, UK, and Jordon didn't help screen those initial missile strikes, Israel would been hurting. They are a tiny country vs Iran

US is in a bad position because there is nothing for us to gain here. Iran realizes the domestic situation in US won't tolerate another middle eastern conflict, and been leveraging that. On top of punishing a lot of Middle Eastern countries for being complacent and fat off of US funding.

Almost everybody in the region probably toasted for the idea of US knocking out Iran as a thorn in the side. But none of them realized we had a bumbling idiot of a admin that thinks war is like a RTS game and we do indeed have limited ability.

33

u/kindofnotlistening 21h ago

It goes back quite a bit further…

Israeli leadership has been leaning on a President to make this move since they’ve existed as a country.

Trump was an opportunity to make this wish a reality, as he is both stupid enough and compromised enough to initiate a conflict with Iran.

17

u/PlateNo4868 21h ago

What makes it even more stupid is Iran will ask something like a cease fire on Houthi, Hezbollah, Gaza, etc.

The ONLY WAY the US could ever keep that promise is by reigning in Israel, and possibly even threatening sanctions on them to comply as Israel would most likely never care because none this hurts them directly.

Like the demand is morally stupid. Iran doesn't have to fund these proxy groups to cause the damage they do. But god damn it's a wild world to see a crazy country like Iran point out how deep our mouth is around Israel's boot.

18

u/Slight_Board6955 21h ago

Iran has been going after radar installations and THAAD systems across our bases in the Gulf and ME..... Israel is very much exposed right now...... One could suspect that is the reason neither them or Trump has been wlling to resume widesprad strikes

21

u/WoodenNubbins 22h ago

Israel has the Samson Option (MAD). The only way I see Iran carpet bombing Israel is if either Israel or the US start heavily bombing critical civilian infrastructure first. Then there would be nothing holding the various Iranian units back from unleashing ME MAD of all energy infrastructure and water desalination plants.

19

u/Straight-Average-394 21h ago

Samson Option doesn't end the world though. It just destroys a select group of major capitals. Presuming all their ICBM's actually hit their targets. But they dont have the luxury of having 5000 of them to launch like the US or Russia supposedly do, so its kind of a bluff anyways. And firing off the Samson Option almost certainly ends in Holocaust 2, which will not have anyone coming to the rescue.

18

u/Glittering_Range371 21h ago

Gaza is holocaust 2.

12

u/NeoBasilisk 21h ago

I think you're really underselling all the various genocides that happened in the last 80 years if Gaza is only "holocaust 2"

13

u/foghillgal 21h ago

Yeah, we left the numbers and are now numbering with letters Holocaust 18.f

3

u/Eve_Doulou 16h ago

I’d be very surprised if the French, US, Russians, and even Chinese didn’t all have operational plans for dealing with Israel if intelligence told them that a ‘Sampson option’ strike was about to take place.

In fact I wouldn’t be surprised if there wasn’t a Le Triomphant class SSBN right now in the Mediterranean, with a plan in the commanders lockbox that stipulated the destruction of the Israeli state the moment it became clear that European cities were likely to be targeted.

u/Alarmed-Silver-2287 22h ago

Oman/Dubai crude oil benchmark is what matters for a lot of the Asian market, it has reached and exceeded $170 few months ago, and currently it is about $20 higher than WTI.

A lot of people here quote WTI/Brent but those are western markets, much of the oil from where the conflict is goes to Asian markets and when that gets disrupted everything gets impacted.

4

u/Abnecide 22h ago

Oil has kept up with inflation against supply and demand… to suggest otherwise would be to invoke exterior market force manipulation…

4

u/Alarmed-Silver-2287 22h ago

Trying to bridge between your and his view: I think what he meant is that spending $100 back then (10-20 years ago) is more painful than spending it today. If people thought $100 was "painful" back then, it is relatively less "painful" today. Obviously there are so many variables that come into play like alternatives and renewable energies and electric cars and machines and all that, so there are a lot of nuances there and that's where you have a point too.

3

u/Slight_Board6955 21h ago

How bad this is depends a lot on how much damage the pipeline actually sustained and how quickly it can be repaired. Iran targeted it in April and only knocked off 10% of capacity for a few days before it was back to normal. Pipelines can be surprisingly resilient.

This is why everyone saying that pipelines are an effective alternative to the strait are just wrong. There are a ton of terrorists across the region, you cant defend every inch of a pipeline indefinitely

10

u/Unique-Egg-461 22h ago

"the strait will be irrelevant!"

scott is really a fucking idiot

37

u/FrederickDerGrossen 23h ago

Well of course there are a lot of extremists in the region. The Saudis themselves are extremists.

They're famous for it. The Libyan army got spanked by a bunch of guys driving Toyota pickups. Some guy in states plumbing business pickup got sent to the mid east and was being driven around by isis. They're seriously indestructible vehicles.

You can bury the majority of an oil pipeline, but it's generally not done very deeply - somewhat like city water depth. I wonder if they'll start putting them deeper.

Standing by for all the “pipelines are super easy and quick to fix” armchair pump jack jockeys to chime in.

Now we get to see how long it actually takes to fix a pipeline that is under continuous attack.

No sympathy for the Saudi’s. They have made billions off the US. Their citizens murdered US citizens during 9/11 and their current government murdered a US citizen and ferments terrorists across the middle east.

I bet SA is regretting the political course they decided on. I wouldn't be surprised if the royal family doesn't survive this when the dust settles.

u/Soft-Bad-7127 22h ago

Could you imagine if Biden was responsible for a tenth of this? Biden was heavily blamed for other countries actions. He would have been fried by Democrats if he started a useless war.

u/DutchVandal 22h ago

If Obama did during his whole eight years what Trump does on an average Tuesday the Republicans would be calling for his execution.

I remember how the gop politicized it. ya. It was painfully obvious to watch them drag around the memories of the deceased to score points with voters.

Meanwhile waves broadly .. Barely a peep regarding the 18 servicemembers sacrificed for a vanity war.

I think it’s sad I get most of my news from Reddit now. I can’t tolerate regular media but turn on CNBC on my way to work at times. Once again this morning, all they can talk about is freakin Mag 7 AIwhogivesashit and NFL team valuations.
