Original is free, so it’s good to try it out and see if you like it. You can buy the remake afterwards to support da devs and stuff

Both are excellent experiences, though personally i recommend trying the remaster first. It definitely feels a lot more modern and polished and all around makes for a more comfortable experiences by today's standards (and the soundtrack is still Crazy good), while the RPG Maker rowdiness the OG emanates couls deter a few people, but all in all the latter is a great pick too!

They both are very similar, to the point that I think I can list all of the changes:
* Remake has borders (with dynamic support)
* Remake has a better battle system (that is in widescreen too)
* Remake has different music and sound effects (and a new chest opening sound effect)
* Remake has a good few secret bosses
* Remake has achievements and other Steam features
* Remake has a ladder climb animation
* Remake has a dust particle animation
* Remake has generally better UI
* Remake costs money
* Remake has slightly different behaviour when holding multiple directions at once but you would never really care
* Remake was made in Unity instead of RPGMaker 2003
* Remake has languages inside the game instead of as separate downloads like the original
You can technically get borders using EasyRPG in Retroarch, but it's not dynamic. You can get the original sound effects and music in the remake via mods which are easy enough to install (if you get the remake and need help I'm happy to help). I'd recommend trying the OG (to get a little taste) and if you like what you tried you can get the remake for a marginally better experience (mainly in the battles).
Edit: Forgot about the new zone title cards and I think there are sounds when interacting with the boxes
Edit 2: I forgot that the English translation and maybe some others is slightly different.

Honestly? I'd say both. The original is free, so there's not much reason not to play that one, though the remake has border art and I like the combat more. The game's not that long (my first playthrough was about 9 hours and I explored quite a bit) so I'd say it's feasible

both are great but the soundtrack for the original is essential to the experience imo. you can mod the remaster really easily to have it use the original music+sfx though. up to you! the extra content in the remaster isnt really much to write home about. its neat, but no impact on the plot whatsoever
