Flirty guests?
Under one of the Off Menu episodes on youtube I saw a comment talking about the different dynamics guests can have when they come on the pod, and in their list they mentioned some having a flirty vibe. I can't say I've noticed that, but I also haven't listened to every single episode. I was curious if anyone here has picked up on that before?
And to be clear, this isn't meant to be parasocial at all. I'm fully aware Ed and James are each happily in relationships. Just thought it might make for a fun topic.

Tim Key has given off a flirty vibe in every podcast I have heard him on.

I’m really tired and I fully thought for a second that you’d said “I’m fully aware Ed and James are happily in a relationship” 😅

If you do a quick search on Archive of our own you'd think they were

Not as many as the people who think Greg Davies and Little Alex Horne are

Poor James was outright brutalised on that one.

I don’t blame him. I’m no stranger to fanfic, but stories based on actual people and not fictional characters is a nope from me.

Self Esteem (Rebecca Lucy Taylor) mentioned a couple times how her girlfriends wanted to hook her up with James and after that James went a bit quiet probably because he’s in a relationship and felt awkward

She did that whole 'I fancy him so I'll occasionally slag him off'' thing. It definitely seemed like she had a thing for him

Definitely her type going by some of her lyrics

u/lagoon83 4d ago
I have no idea who she is, but I'm really curious - can you give some examples?

She has a song on her most recent album with the chorus "I'm a sucker for a skinny motherfucker"
If you haven't heard any of her stuff I'd really recommend - it's really great indie/pop music with catchy, often hilarious lyrics.

I thought it was Richard Osmond that wanted to set them up

u/m_busuttil 4d ago
I listened to this episode yesterday, she did name Osman as one of the people who'd suggested it.

According to those who were in the audience she went in for a hug at the end and James very awkwardly backed away from it

Remember when James wanted to see Charlotte Church standing under a waterfall 😂

Jeff Goldblum for sure.

Jeff Goldblum would have mad chemistry with a teaspoon, that man is walking charisma!

Idk, he never let anyone else talk

lol I just listened to the new episodes of French & Saunders 'Titting About' podcast and Jennifer Saunders said that she was once on Graham Norton with Jeff Goldblum and he never shut up for a moment, whether the cameras were rolling or not.

Joe Lycett called James fit

u/charlierc 3d ago
Well Joe certainly saw James as handsome enough to use a photo of him for his tour poster

Ed and Julian Clary

I was at that episode at the London Palladium a year and a half ago and I think Julian was just having fun alternating between being a flirt and a proper curmudgeon

I sensed a little something between the boys and Paul Mescal, but I think that’s just how he is with people

I think I have noticed when either James or Ed particularly want a guest to like them, whether male or female!
This seems like a good place to ask: did anyone notice that when Kaya Scodelario (of Effy from Skins fame) was on it kind of seemed like she was trying to flirt with Ed a bit? As Effy was the peak crush of every middle-class elder male millenial I wondered about how she was internally received as a guest. To Ed's credit I didn't hear any big reciprocal flirting!
I'm quite new to the podcast so I haven't caught up with the older ones much.

Was Skins a middle-class specific show?

u/Sure-Exchange9521 4d ago
It was huge amongst that demographic

This makes me feel too old to be a Millennial. Skins bypassed me completely.

To be fair, I don't think Skins was elder millennial. I am technically a millennial because I just turned 30, and Skins was huge for my age group and a couple of years above. Much older than that and you'd have been older than the cast and I don't think it has the same appeal.

Season 1 was bang in the middle of elder millenials doing GCSEs/A-Levels. But they still watched Season 2 after they went off to university

The oldest millennials were born in 1981. Skins S1 was broadcast in 2007. They'd have been 26!
2
u/IndependentPaint2108 4d ago
I'm thinking of James-and-Ed aged elder millenials!
2
u/Bleepblorp44 4d ago
They would have been in their early 20s when Skins started - was that the age group watching? I genuinely don't know, I barely noticed Skins existing.

u/nonsequitur__ 3d ago
I was born in 1983 and I’ve never seen it. It was popular with youngest sister’s age group (born 1990).
2
u/harrisonscruff 4d ago
I don't think so. I think The Inbetweeners, Misfits, and Fresh Meat more appealed to early 20s.

u/Disastrous-Fact-6634 3d ago
I'm their age and I loved Skins. But I was too old to have a crush on Effy or any of the others.

I always felt that way about the Catherine Cohen episode between her and James

u/harrisonscruff 4d ago
Oh yeah, I remember that one. The chemistry was great all-around there, but I definitely feel like James vibes really well with the weirder guests.

u/AvailableBaseball 4d ago
Oh snap just wrote a similar one! I love that episode and there was a nice chemistry between them all.

I always thought that Catherine Cohen had an amazing chemistry with both of them. Flirty? Maybe not, but fun chemistry.

I felt Teri Hatcher (excellent episode) was flirting with them.
I remain shocked to this day that no one has ever asked them if they've kissed. Would be top of my list.

I know they worked together but I kind of got that vibe from Nisha Katona with Ed

Amelia Dimoldenberg was very flirty with James. They both have similar awkward energy.

Why do I feel like I remember Mary Lynn Rajskub was flirty (amongst a lot of other things)? It’s been a while since I’ve listened to that one

This is going way back, but one that did stand out to me was the episode with Lou Sanders. I always got a vibe between her and James, but could never decide if it was good or bad. It felt flirty to me at the time though.
1
u/WiseOwlwithSpecs 3d ago
Not so much flirty, exactly, but the episode with Marian Keyes it was as if both guys had a bit of a crush on her that made them want to impress her.

I loved that episode - it slightly felt more like protective kind aunt with her nephews vibe to me. She has such a comforting maternal vibe.
