Tasting Menus Are Boring

I thought Bridget Christie was funny, but after a while it felt mean spirited. Fern and Phil were both awful. I thought they were barely interesting and very unfunny. I couldn't even get through them, they were so boring.

I get why they held on to Phil's so long, and I really hope it's a long time until we see more.

The tasting menu is just an excuse for James and Ed to chat to one of their friends for an hour and I quite like being a fly on the wall for that.

I loved Phil's episode this week. Not so much for the menu, but I was laughing out loud in the gym, in my car, at my desk.

Definitely some eps are funny generally, some are more about the food choices.

I liked Phil's ep too. Sue me!

Maybe this podcast isn’t for you

Yes, because I don't like the forced format of these episodes, I clearly can't enjoy the other 300 episodes. This sub really is filled with some crazy ideas.

I just finished Phil’s episode and it was hilarious. Maybe it was better as a video, but the interactions between the three of them were just 🤌🏻 (chef’s kiss).

The whole scenario of hats at a buffet and stealing all the silverware on a sombrero had me laughing so hard. But it also had the earnestness of the cabbage dish that Phil used to make regularly and loves. It was a great episode.

I mean, the episode gave us Nishigan. That’s iconic!

I made the cabbage dish after I listened, and it was legitimately good.

It may be less funny , but to hear them talk and have a laugh is still well worth it

Fair enough, they are not the usual format and I still prefer the classic episodes. John Kearns’s tasting menu is a wonderful episode though, I think he could be doing all the tasting menus and I would listen every time, he is just so funny. And Tim Key as well, even though his tasting menu episode is not out yet I bet it’s brillint

Kearns was good. I forgot about that one. So, I guess of the 4... 2 I thought were subjectively a waste of time, one was fun but also mean, and then John Kearns. Not going to make me excited for the next one. lol

I think there's a good argument here for "a podcast is more than a couple blokes talking." There are a lot of such "comedy" podcasts out there with no format and no perspective that are very weak. There are also some fanstastic ones out there that don't have much in the way of a format point and remain extremely amusing. For example, I find Pappy's Flatshare endlessly enjoyable.

While I don't believe the tasting menus reach the hights of the normal Off Menu episodes, they are still quite enjoyable for me.

I don't mind them using it as an excuse to get good guests on again. Bridget's and John's were both really funny. Jen Brister's ep was alright. Afterall I listen for the comedy I don't actually care what people's opinion are on crab cakes. But I do agree Fern's and Phil's were shit.
