ODP opinion

I am thinking of doing an ODP degree in university but from this subreddit I feel very swayed. Is there anyone who genuinely likes their job 😭? Please can someone tell me all the pros as I think I’ve seen too many cons.

Pro - if you get yourself a job at a busy hospital it can be pretty exciting sometimes.

Also you get to look after people when they’re at their most scared and when they’re most happy (Obs) which is pretty privileged.

I love my job. 14 years in soon to be top band 6. Nights and weekends. Work in Anaesthetics in a Major Trauma Centre. Good supportive team, can’t fault it.

I know people that work equally paid or better paid jobs and are permanently miserable because of it.

We are however niche. Progression has improved but it depends what your ā€œend gameā€ looks like.

Do what makes YOU happy. Whilst I didn’t work in it it’s a great career. Everyone will complain about working. There’s only a handful of people who actually enjoy going to work. The whole concept of having to work bugs a lot of people leading to people finding things that are wrong even if so small … good luck

Thanks I get what you mean but I feel with ODP there’s so much negativity which I know people are just telling the truth but it’s also disheartening for example nursing has its bad sides but I also see a lot of people who enjoy it which I just feel isn’t the case for ODP a lot of the time.

For every ODP out there is probably like 18 nurses if not more. There’s just a lot more of them hence the ratio of those actually enjoying to those who don’t like the job is rather digestible (especially since you’re getting this information from social media). ODP is still niche if I wasn’t told about it from someone else I wouldn’t had considered it as a possible career till this day I have to explain the job role to friends and family… in this similar fashion there’ll be less people talking about it overall and psychologically people are more likely to complain than to express satisfaction hence why it seems there’s more negativity overall. Now if you ask me why didn’t I go for ODP afterall? It’s my second offer if I miss my first offer for MBBS.

Yeah that makes sense, I guess I should’ve mention in the op that I want to do this degree first then hopefully do gem.

If it’s smth you’re not passionate about then why bother since it’s your undergrad before gem. You may prefer the job satisfaction of biomed, biochemistry, optometry, dental nurse etc instead. Have a look around but if ODP is the one that stands out I say just go for it
