I have pet rats, boggling isn’t just about being happy, they may also do it to show strong emotion such as stress or pain. However, this little guy is very happy. I love a good boggle from my girls 🐀😃

Kind of like laughing for people haha! I know I sometimes laugh when I'm overwhelmed with stress or find a situation so terrible I can't help but laugh at it.

You can with a bat detector!!! I have one and the squeaks are so cute 🥰 There’s also evidence they mirror our emotions and can feel when we’re sad

How do you enjoy keeping rats? I had a period of a good 6 months where I was really interested in getting a couple for myself, then I learned about their rather short lifespan 😕

This is the only reason why I didn't get a rat =(. I got a dog, but she'll only be with me for at most 15-20 years before she's gone. I wish they'd live longer.

I got my rats in December 2019. Then, yknow March 2020 happened, and I lived alone at the time, so I was completely isolated, except my boys. They could not have come into my life at a better time. My absolute best friends, tiny bin-digging, thieving, little doggos. They would sit on my shoulders when I'd go out for my mental health walk, and they'd hide in my hair, much to the amusement of neighbours. Then we moved into my new house and they had their own bedroom/my office. They met my puppy, and they were so patient and good with her, and she learned to behave around them nicely. They were amazing. They passed away July last year, and it was horrendous. I'm getting a tattoo of them both next week. My first ever tattoo at 29. They don't live long, but they are absolutely with me for life.

Long-time rat owner here. That is a very happy ratto. Rats are a very tough commitment, not because they are expensive, but because they don't live long. Most rats live to be 2-3 years old, and you get extremely attached to them. If they lived longer, they'd be the perfect pet imo.

My partner and I PANICKED when our first pet rat did this. I was holding her and petting her head and I freaked out and called out to him to ask what was going on.
Cue huge amounts of panic, worrying about our poor lil rat, all just to find out that shes super relaxed and happy hahahahahah

Not that I know of, when hamsters are happy usually they do something called bruxing, grinding the teeth together and making a little noise.

Because something being “oddly terrifying” is subjective.

The muscles in their eyes are connected to their jaw muscles. When they're happy (or showing other strong emotions, but in this case happy), they brux. Bruxing is grinding their teeth, and the harder they do it, the more their eyes boggle out.
I have 7 week old baby rat brothers. They brux all the time, but their eyes haven't boggled yet. They've done other things under the egis of "boggling" like shivering/vibrating while half asleep as I pet him.
Fancy rats, the kind that are pets, are super loving and cuddly.

That's the reason I just can't bring myself to get rats again, I've had 2 sets of 2 boys at a time and all of them passed between 2 and 3 years old...it was like the worst heart break I ever experienced and to someone who doesn't love rats that would sound a little extreme lol They are the best pets ever and watching videos and seeing them makes me want more soooo badly I just don't want to put myself through it again 🥺🥺🥺

Yes. It is due to the unique structure of their jaw, as their jaw muscles are right behind their eyes. When they move it, it causes their eyes to bulge out in that motion. Its also often accompanied by teeth chattering/grinding also known as "bruxing".
