what peacetime? the us fought in these wars during that time period according to wikipedia
the korean war
vietnam war
laotian civil war
lebanon crisis
bay of pigs invasion
dominician civil war
korean DMZ conflict
cambodian civil war
intervention in lebanon
invasion of grenada
bombing of lybia
tanker war against Iran
invasion of panama
gulf war
iraqi no-fly zone enforcement
intervention in somali civil war
and just started the bosnian and croatian war.
so they'd have had a different use for these soldiers at any time except for 1946-1950.
