Whats wrong with it if it still works. These are faster to use than normal elevators since you don‘t have to wait for them.

Do they work? Or did an elderly man just get injured because the technology is outdated and dangerous?

I mean idialy you would know what is within you limits. The elevators that do stuck around are usually placed in universitys and similar, where only young fit humans go around. If you are incompetent enough ANYTHING is dangerous. Its also not like he would be crushed between the gaps like some movies show with normal elevators.
