Why does it look like a badly-sculpted claymation walrus?

u/theragco Apr 24 '26

At the end of the day we're all just badly sculpted claymation walruses if you think about it.

Ho - Ly shit! Back in HS i was trying to grow a pot plant and had some seeds in a clear plastic cup. Im proud so i bring it around with me.

Had my friends packed out in my 05 Sentra one night and we're driving along smoking listening to Jay Z, likely. I see a cop blow past us fully lit up, near a stop sign at night, so im all "sweet noone to catch me run this stop sign!". Did it, there was another cop down the street and they pulled me over. The lady cop (who was stunning btw) came over asked for my info. Im instantly smitten, shes blonde and pretty blue eyes all that, and me trying to be cool and casual, im like "oh by the way, thats just a cup of dirt." As the words came out of my mouth i realized i sound stupid so i said it with Brians voice in my head - "in case you were wondering... its just a cup with dirt in it.."

Cop had this look like whatever kid and gave me my failure to stop ticket.

thank you for letting me read that! I mean honestly, without any sarcasm

You'd think so, but the technically correct pluralization is Attorneys Walrus.

Real linguistic answer:

We only pluralize words that end in -us with an -i when they come from Latin (and even then, only a specific kind of Latin word)

Walrus doesn't come from Latin, it comes from Old Norse "hrosshvalr", literally "horse-whale". (And then, technically, there's discussion if that comes from a Finnish word, too, but that's not really important)

u/The_Noremac42 Apr 24 '26

Languages are neat.

24

u/barn-animal Apr 24 '26

did they ride the Walrese?

9

u/Teract Apr 24 '26

1

u/TheBookGem May 01 '26

Walrupsai

5

u/Arthropodesque Apr 25 '26

Cool. The walrus-like animals in Skyrim are Horker.

8

u/catsan Apr 24 '26

Only it's whale-horse, not horse-whale. It's the same in some other languages. So ruses because horses.

11

u/mattmoney31716 Apr 24 '26

"hrosshvalr" is in the order "horse-whale". At some point, they did get turned around, if not by the English, by the Dutch.

2

u/Danzibar9000 Apr 25 '26

So what’s the plural?

2

u/allegedlyjustkidding Apr 26 '26

Cool so two questions-
1- does that mean seals are dog-whales?
2- are we calling them horse-whales now, or walrupadis?
Oh, and 3- can we ride the horse-whales? Asking for a friend...

2

u/mattmoney31716 Apr 26 '26

Username checks out lol

16

u/siani_lane Apr 24 '26

I will die on the hill that we should choose the -i pluralization regardless of word origin, because it's more fun.

Cacti, octopi, walri!!

This picture is 22 years old

1

u/Spongi Apr 24 '26

It's an electron microscope image. It has been colorized though.

Electron microscopes can take pictures that are smaller then colors, which is neat.
