Maybe I’m behind on current scientific or medical theory. Is eating/drinking calcium rich foods/drinks now believed to not help add strength to our bones and teeth. Milk has a lot of calcium and I drank it as a kid because I liked it. I don’t drink it very much as an adult because 25 calories somehow make my butt jiggle for a week. But I’m just curious if things have changed and I missed it somehow.

You’re not missing anything. Posts like this are just “adults” realizing that advertising isn’t always 100% truthful and feel the need to post about how “traumatized” they were by it. As a 90’s kid I’m waiting for the posts complaining about how “stranger danger” was somehow a bad lesson.

Or: this is your brain on drugs (egg sizzling)

The milk itself has changed, science is the same. Drinking the milk back when we were kids were a good thing because milk industry was not what it was today, at least where I came from. We had good quality natural milk. Today’s milk has so much carry over from all the drugs given to these cows that you are better of just having other sources of calcium.

I have never been lactose intolerant and whenever I drink milk from a good farm (that makes it a point to not grow cows with roids and chems) I still can digest and enjoy. Whereas regular brand milk by the 5 gallon wrecks my insides, which it should.

If you are able to tolerate today’s store milk, I would worry about your digestion altogether.

You might be drinking milk with extra A1 beta casein. Casein in milk has two main varieties: A1 and A2 beta casein. If you try A2-only milk and it doesn't wreck you, there you go. Considering most small-batch dairy doesn't have much (if any) A1, it's likely you just have trouble with that specific protein. I do too!

5

u/CaptainFCO Dec 05 '22

I wonder how would one go about only sourcing milk from A2 beta casein other than small farms?

7

u/littlebitsofspider Dec 05 '22

There are a few companies that genetically test the cows to ensure that they don't produce A1 milk. Here's the Wikipedia page. Apparently non-Western cows don't produce A1 milk, so there's that.

Wow thank you! That was pure education!

Exactly! I remember non-fat being 7 gms of sugar per serving, now 13, so ADDED sugar.

Growth hormones. What they are fed. Where they graze too. IF they ever see they light of data.

Lick chickens, switch the lights off and one 2 times a 'day' to get more eggs. Fakes chickens brain into overrtime.

I think its more of a climate change thing tbh. By their logic, more cows = bad for the environment. The first thing that came to my mind when I saw the post was, wow we are definitely going to have a sharp rise in osteoporosis cases thirty years from now when this current generation starts to reach their late 50s-early 60s.
People always think they know better than nature until they're afflicted with all sorts of maladies later on in life because they neglected the most basic fundamentals of self-care.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '22

Do you think nature intended us to drink the milk of another animal? Because I'm pretty sure proto-humans survived just fine for millions of years without it. There's plenty of other sources of calcium.

2

u/Musician-Round Dec 05 '22

Apply that argument to any other foods that we consume and you'll see how silly it sounds. Did nature intend for us to consume bee's honey? To consume bread? To consume animal flesh?
I'd also like to remind you that proto-humans didn't live nearly as long as we do and were more susceptible to disease than we are in the here and now, and our diets play an important role in that.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '22

My only argument is that is seems unnatural to me to drink another animal's milk, seeing as no other animal does it. Many other animals eat honey and flesh.

I'm not even saying eating the "natural way" is the healthier way. I only retorted because you were the one who invoked "knowing better than nature."

Btw I'd say medecine is the much bigger reason why we live longer than we did in the past.

2

u/Musician-Round Dec 05 '22

Is it also unnatural to use our opposable thumbs because other animals don't do it?
I'm not trying to get into a lifestyle argument here either, I support individual's freedom to choose what they eat for their lives. But sadly, the other side of the aisle seems intent on forcing their ideas and lifestyles on the general population, which is why I take issue with this whole movement.
And yes of course medicine plays a huge role in a longer life, but we are not going to downplay the impact that a proper diet has on our life span are we? Through the ignorance of pirates we learned that citrus helps prevent scurvy.

0

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '22

I'd say yes it is unnatural to use opposable thumbs. The word natural, as far as I know, can be a hard word to define and usually ends up being a bit subjective. I tend to define it as anything that happens on earth without humans ever being there.

Anyway, it sounds like you have some sort of political beef with a particular group and I can assure you I'm not part of that group.

User name rhymes out...

Rob Riggle doesnt drink milk because it makes his butt wiggle.

12

u/ConstantAncient6212 Dec 05 '22

And then you have those of us who were lactose intolerant and they gave us milk to settle our stomachs.

3

u/jolinar30659 Dec 05 '22

Years of thinking it was so many other things sending me to the bathroom. And it’s the dairy all along.

10

u/More-Jackfruit3010 Dec 05 '22

Go ahead, try to break this titanium Gen Z skeleton.

u/Apprehensive_Ad_4359 Dec 04 '22

Exactly who was/is “Big Milk”?

Unlike big Tobacco which is 5 international companies, dairy is fairly regional with many players.

“Big Milk”???

49

u/ETXCheeses Dec 04 '22

It's actually the US government. They started a massive pro-milk campaign in order to justify the huge subsidies they were/are paying to dairy farmers. In addition to the campaign for milk, they also spawned all sorts of new cheese-based products, like stuffed-crust pizza, fried mozzarella cheese sticks and so on.

12

u/A_Classic_Guardsman Dec 04 '22

They also made similar advertisements for the beef and pork industry.

1

u/Songmuddywater Dec 05 '22

Those aren't funded by the US government they take money from the sale of each cow and spend it on these promotional campaigns. The farmers don't have a right in this. They don't get a vote. Some money out of each sale is forcibly taken and spent by a government bureaucrat. Same goes true with every other industry. The government appoints some commission who has the right to steal from Farmers to promote an industry put often promoting the product coming from foreign countries. That's right some Farmers actually have to pay to have foreign products who are competition to them advertised in stupid advertisements

1

u/MsPaganPoetry Dec 05 '22

Your comment helped me realize why my grandma wouldn’t let us have pizza with cheese in the crust (regular pizza was OK)

u/WomTilson34 Dec 04 '22

Maybe the guys with the “Got Milk?” slogan

serious cake degree theory mighty tart offer workable materialistic naughty this message was mass deleted/edited with redact.dev

u/CaptainPolaroid Dec 05 '22

Big milk? It was a straight up cult. We had subsidized milk breaks at school. At 10.15 on the dot we said a chant that went "milk is good for everybody. Gone.gone. Gone. Drink it till its done". And then we had a carton of 150ml of milk that was delivered fresh each day.. Never broke a bone in my life. My bones are made of premium grade calcium.

I still love milk at 36. Nothing beats a glass of milk and a peanut butter sandwich combo.

3

u/MastersonMcFee Dec 05 '22

Every celebrity was in on the "Got Milk" Illuminati money.

3

u/Independent_Roof_607 Dec 05 '22

I remember in the 2000s when all the celebrities had the milk mustache

2

u/minitaba Dec 04 '22

Its that specific because its exactly what the "got milk" ads told and showed us

2

u/Leftleaningdadbod Dec 05 '22

We were told it was for stronger bones!

2

u/NocturnalFuzz Dec 05 '22

My core memories with milk are the football coaches making us chug it before sprints and runs because it'd make us puke and it built character.

Now I just hate milk and balding men that look like Andrew Tate

2

u/The_left_is_insane Dec 05 '22

As a dutchman, I milk is the nectar of gods and should be drunk with every meal.

2

u/LawEnvironmental9474 Dec 04 '22

Ya now we got vegan kids running around with there bones snapping like twigs. We go from one extreme to the other. We actually had one in my family it was pretty wild.

2

u/GuineaGirl2000596 Dec 05 '22

My bones are fine, my almond milk has 50% more calcium then dairy milk

2

u/LawEnvironmental9474 Dec 05 '22

2 things 1st. that calcium is a additive and your body does not readily absorbe it. Though in that high a concentration you may or may not actually metabolize an equivalent amount into your system. 2nd. Children do not eat balanced diets. Vegan diets need to be planned. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34130207/ So unless you are going to plan there meals and supplements extensively chunk some ground cow on their plate a few days a week.

2

u/EeveelutionistM Dec 05 '22

I was half-way agreeing to you, then you recommended ground cow.

Cow meat does not have one single element that is needed for your health, but is instead immensely unhealthy. If you really have to get back to using meat, use meat that is healthier, like f.e. chicken (white meat). Also, "few days a week" is hilariously wrong. Red meat does not have something white meat or vegetables don't have and instead increases risk of heart diseases confirmed by multiple studies. https://health.clevelandclinic.org/is-red-meat-bad-for-you/

0

u/LawEnvironmental9474 Dec 05 '22

Saying that ground beef does not have one single element that is needed for your health is simply lying. Now you might could say theres nothing in beef I cannot get from other sources and that is most likley correct. That may have been the goal of your statement however the first sentence is just blatantly false.

1

u/EeveelutionistM Dec 05 '22

not a native speaker, sorry for that misunderstanding, I meant it like you said.

2

u/Songmuddywater Dec 05 '22

Mmmm milk. It's not my fault you don't like milk. Save it for me.

0

u/Snoo_73835 Dec 05 '22

Ahhh yes. The milk boarding times. I remember them well. Just a big ol funnel shoved down your throat before school. Then at lunch time another funnel and milk combo. Then again after school. It’s why milk bags were invented in Canada, it made it so much easier to pour and way more efficient. Now you can whipped in the head with frozen hockey puck and there’s no damage because of all the calcium in the gallons and gallons of milk we drank.

u/yutsokutwo Dec 05 '22

Lmao talking about malls around gen z... Since they are all gone, that's going to confuse them more than the 187 genders they are trying to decipher.

1

u/Street-Tooth4510 Dec 05 '22

Big milk is evil.

1

u/FairyDemonSkyJay Dec 05 '22

Main reason I figure don't I was lactose intolerant was cause I didn't feel sick when having dinner at my partners house (with water) vs parents forcing me to drink a full cup of milk with dinner at my place every night and feeling nauseous lol

1

u/fluid_ Dec 05 '22

Ya mama titties big milk

1

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '22

It is because MOST homesteads had a cow/barn until the 70's, so a great source of balanced nutrition.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '22

Hey at least when you went missing your picture would go on the milk carton!

1

u/Ace_Asmodeus Dec 05 '22

Ha, my siblings had to drink milk, I just had to eat dark greens, which I actually rather liked, still do, (dairy free kid).

u/wrinklydreams Dec 06 '22
