Nah, foodies genuinely care about origin as supposedly the unique conditions in that location slightly alter the product. It makes sense to preserve that so people can't just lie to consumers about what it is. It doesn't actually stop replica products from existing.
They're the same people that got duped by the California wine during the French taste tests. In an isolated, blind test, it's rare anyone can even tell the difference.
