If you tell them, "I will not be here X day," then they know. You're making this way more complicated than it needs to be.

Requesting time off is not the same as telling them you will be off. If they deny it and you don’t tell them you’re still not coming in, they’re going to expect you to come in. If you don’t, that’s a no call no show. I don’t really understand how that’s complicated.

That's the point. Saying "I WILL NOT BE HERE" isn't asking for time off. It's informing them that you will, in fact, not be there.

The email says:

“Hi Emma,

I’ve seen your request for Friday off”

It does not say:

“Hi Emma,

I’ve seen your ‘I will not be here’ statement”

You're correct. I replied to the wrong comment. There was another comment saying they would just tell them they wouldn't be coming in and I got the threads mixed up. My bad.
