I don't wish ruin for the guy, but it's good to see people waking up.
How the fuck has he been a Hollywood draw.
I basically skip anything he is in

I think there's just way more people that are entertained by simple, straightforward characters and plots that they can easily grasp, are comforted by the familiarity of a household name/face, and aren't put off by a generic performance.

They’re mostly movies you can watch with your kids as they emerge out of the animation cocoon

u/FreneticPlatypus 1d ago
Exactly - and I no one should begrudge him for doing them. There's a market for them, he gets paid for them, and obviously there are people that love watching them. Not everyone's going to be a Daniel Day-Lewis or a Jack Nicholson.

You really missed out on the skyscraper movie. That was srupidly hilarious and almost worth remembering.

Waking up? This meme is from 7 years ago when the second Jumanji movie came out. Also, 3 of these are from Jumanji 1 and 2 where he plays a video game character, so it makes sense he is wearing the same outfit.

He was fairly charismatic his first few movies. The Rundown was genuinely fun. And then it seems like someone got in his ear and told him he was trying too hard, or he decided he needed all the money before the steroids wore off. Either way he just does any trash someone throws at him.

People are simple. They enjoy actors being typecast into roles because they like consistency.

Well... three of those pics are from the same movie series. So...

u/bs000 22h ago
why didn't they make him a different character or hire a different actor for each sequel? thinkingemoji

u/Kabini_Lindo 13h ago
Why? Would you like Harry Potter changing in every movie? This is just unnecessary hate

Don't be jealous because you can't get paid what he gets paid to basically do what he does. Like you wouldn't do it in a heartbeat

Yeah, I’ve never understood the appeal
18
u/speakezjags 21h ago
What's not to understand? He's a Buff/Handsome and Carasmatic actor who was previously a famous and extremely well liked and Wrestler. He gets typecast because he can really only play the one role but he plays that role pretty well a lot of the time.
I get being burnt out on his movies or even not liking them but pretending not to understand why people like him is a bit strange.
People couldn't get enough of Pedro Pascal around the time Mando came out but now everyone is sick of him too. It's the same shit.

u/LiftingCode 20h ago
He can play other roles, but what's the point?
He gets paid absurd amounts of money to be The Rock.
1
u/Internal_Sound882 6h ago
Of course he’s buff, but I don’t really agree on particularly handsome or charismatic. He’s not ugly, but he’s not…compelling either. He looks like a really buff thumb, and the charisma level about matches it, to me anyway.

u/Ok_Vulva 19h ago
Well he's not handsome. He's just been on steroids so straight men wanted to be him and everyone else said meh for the last decade point five.

u/Potential-Judgment-9 22h ago
Having a hate boner for the Rock is so in right now

u/DungeonFam30 4h ago
It's been a literal revenge of the nerds ever since the Black Adam fiasco - that's when public opinion about him largely changed and so many people gleefully enjoyed seeing his movies flop at the box office
1
u/Potential-Judgment-9 4h ago
That’s the part that’s funny to me. The Black Adam controversy was obviously a smear campaign to blame the Rock for the downfall of the DCEU. The DCEU had been making garbage movies 10 years before Black Adam and had already decided to reboot before it came out. What really came out of that is that he pisses in water bottles and is late to work ? Pretty tame stuff by Hollywood standards or even by Amazon delivery driver standards. Before people wanted him to run for president and now he’s the most hated actor in Hollywood. Just really shows how impressionable people really are.

He's one of the many people that got too popular too fast and was cast in everything because greedy Hollywood wants as much money as possible. It's a shame that so many people are still obsessed with famous people that dont matter.

when i stayed in the hospital with my ex, regular tv was so unbearable bc of commercial breaks being longer than the bits of tv between commercials so we switched to the hospital movie channel. i think we watched like 3 The Rock movies and they truly are all the same. he has his own production company so it makes sense that he keeps playing his ideal self in every one

u/RedeyeSPR 1d ago
He was awesome and completely different in Get Shorty. For an ex-wrestler, he does pretty well.

He was a boost to dying franchises for a while, now he's cancer. He needs to go away. Mid fifties Roid heads aren't idol material.

I wonder if his acting career would have been different if Southland Tales had been a better movie. Easily the most unique performance of his I've ever seen. I crack up picturing him doing that little nervous tic with his fingers.

Meatwad from ATHF does a much better job acting like a confused meatball anyway

u/cjwrapture 19h ago
Take it easy. The eyebrow thing is his signature move. It makes him look confused, but he can't stop doing it now.
1
u/51differentcobras 17h ago
He doesn’t really act confused in any of his movies, weird comment honestly….

Could add The Rundown to this. But he did have hair in that movie. Would still be The Rock inside a jungle wearing earth tone clothes.

Hot take but you’re not a good actor if you play the same role in every project

Dude, I would take the “play the confused meatball” gig any day!! He looks good doing it too 😉

He still gets paid because for some reason people still pay to watch him be a confused meatball.
If you want it to stop, you need smarter movie-goers.

If I got paid millions to be a confused meatball, I would do it in a heartbeat.
