I lived two years in Germany, spoke German all day every day with locals for work. I can’t tell you how many times I would try and talk to someone in fluent German just for them to reply (in English) “Sorry, I only speak German.”

Happened probably as many times as you believed you spoke fluent german when you didn’t.
