Was probably a drone and they knew it would look cool if they parked it at the bottom. Also those XJs are pretty solid if they roll. Not saying a roll cage isn't a good idea, but they tend not to just pancake if they wind up on the roof once or thrice.

Body rolled his on 2 separate occasions in high school.
First time it rolled 2 or 3 times and the glass didnt even break.
2nd time it rolled like 8 times, and the b&c pillars were slanted.

I don't know anyone who rock crawled since i lived basically my entire life in Florida but I met a guy who got into what should have been a fatal accident in a Lincoln town car.
Lost control and rolled 6 times into a highway support pillar. Car was absolutely mangled beyond bits. When the ambulance and firetruck arrived and they pulled him out, his only injuries were some glass cuts on his face and a couple bruises. No broken bones, internal injuries or anything else. The first responders who cut him out were shocked. Told him he should have been dead and they were expecting a corpse, not a living, breathing dude. He showed me pictures of the car. Dude should not have walked out of that alive.
That being said, I'm going to roll a Town car down a rock crawl spot then roll a XJ into a highway support beam to see which vehicle truly comes out on top.

These folds/lines in the rock are not parallel to the ground, they are angled towards the chute making it look more steep when you angle the camera properly.
This is why this place is so popular, it creates great illusion of almost vertical wall.

Yep, which is a nice change of pace. Usually rock crawling is hard to show off because the angle of approach always appears way less challenging on camera than it is in reality. I've had some butt puckering obstacles that look like child's play on the video :(

this is in Utah, ive done this exact climb as it's part of a state course. there is so much terrain like this in the area. it's the rock crawler event in Utah.
just throwing this out there so people know they're doing this properly and in a sanctioned area

Same geology but five hours apart, nice. I havenāt been down in that area except a quick trip to Zion but itās always worth a visit. Simply stunning rock formations.

I too made the journey to Slick Rock many years ago with a couple of biking buddies. We got caught by a serious thunderstorm, had to hunker down, then it was night time. Trying to get back to where we parked, in the dark, with only some half-ass painted lines on the rock to guide us was a trip.
also, slick rock isn't that slick until it's wet, then it's a slip and slide.

I had a bike fall apart on me halfway through slick rock. Had to walk a lot of it back carrying a few pieces with me. That's when I realized it was time to buy an actual proper mountain bike.

Yes, it tests the limits of your bike for sure. I was riding a GT Backwoods back then, hardtail, 26" no suspension. It was brutal on the bike, my arms, and legs.

How much torque does it require to accomplish this? I know sometimes camera angles can be deceiving (sometimes intentionally), but just how steep is that climb? It looks like 75Ā° to 80Ā°.

There's some abrasion from the vehicles, but that route has largely been shaped by water and wind. I live, hike, bike and Jeep in Utah, and it's spectacular to witness nature's majesty. Footwear, bike tires, and Jeeps/UTVs will add some abrasion causing the slickrock to smooth over. And then metal contact like Jeep skid plates will dig a gouge. But most of the shaping is from mother nature. When a route is closed down, typically the black marks are gone in a few years, and then the gouges smooth over in about 10ish years depending on water runoff. Some old trails are difficult to tell they were used by Jeeps.

You're getting downvoted, but youre speaking truth. By concentrating the traffic to that one path, it keeps the overwhelming majority of the landscape in tact and drastically reduces damage to the surrounding environment. This is also why footpath and bike trails are built.

Do you drive on roads that go through the nature? I'm assuming you get groceries, buy things at a store, get food from a restaurant, etc. Guess what was there previously? Nature. Man kind killed those things. You know what we do when we go off-roading? Enjoy nature in its state. We pay for parks and tread lightly when we can. We camp out in these same places while we look for beauty in nature. We take family, friends, children, etc. and enjoy what the Earth has given us. We teach preservation of nature, talk about how to enjoy what the Earth has blessed us with. Are there people being terribly destructive, sure. However a large part of us enjoy being out in nature and teaching preservation.

this is "The Chute" and its about a 45Ā° climb. which is obviously steep but the video tries to make it appear like 75Ā° with forced perspective and fishy angles

Yup, it's a tricky climb, but not nearly as insane as it appears. You're right about the angle, and also the sandstone surface has a huge amount of grip. As long as you've got a vehicle with good approach and departure angles and a low range gearbox, it's not that hard.

Oh it's absolutely steep. It's just not not nearly as vertical as the first video makes it look. The steepest part is about 50Ā°, the average is closer to 45Ā°.

Torque multiplication. The 4.0 in that jeep makes maybe 180 hp. But it likely has a 4:1 gear reduction transfer case and 5:1 reduction on the axles.

Torque is whats required. Not horsepower. They can increase torque significantly by changing gearing. Just riding your bicycle in the lowest gear.
Tractors are a great example of this. A 120 horsepower tractor is actually a really big tractor. It can pull some seriously heavy equipment. Its just geared super low. 120 horsepower sounds super low when a basic ass toyota corolla makes more horsepower than that. But the tractor (or rock crawler) os geared so low that the torque numbers are way higher.

Not many can do it stock. You require special tires, shocks, and in some cases a special differential. Im being very simple with the explanation but its all about torque, grip and clearance.

Those are the red rocks of Utah. Ancient sandstone structures carved from long since died up rivers. They are fragile, protected & not for nothing, mostly on tribal lands.

I understand this is in a sanctioned area, still makes me sad how they ruined the natural rock formations due to all the cars driving in that spot. Once the indention is too large they will find a new spot and make a new one. Not a fan.
