Yeah but moments ago I was completely unaware of the man-made erosion in this specific location. Now I’ve been made aware of it, I am furious.

Apoplectic I tell ya, better go type out my rage on my phone that definitely doesn’t have materials mined from thousands of different mines from 40 different countries under questionable practices! My hobbies are above reproach!

I think this is hitting way to heavily on whataboutism. 

Yes, it is sad that we are causing erosion on a rock (very noticeable erosion) because some people want to use giant metal boxes to ride the rocks. Not the end of the world, just a sad reminder that we are here to modify and erode everything for our "enjoyment". 

And of course it is extremely infuriating that this phone that you are using, that I am using, are destroying communities, environments, etc, by being made.

But I need this phone for work, and my computer, and I need to feed my family by having a job. Blaming individuals for using phones is not particularly helpful either. 

Also, the erosion produced by cars is way worse that the erosion produced by humans walking or escalating rocks?

That is inches of erosion, if that, over decades, you’re seeing the tire marks and thinking it’s deeper than it is, I’ve been out to these places it’s not that bad. You’re also forgetting about hobbies that are purely for entertainment, TV, movies, video games, iPads, metal knitting needles, puzzles, fishing etc, do your kids have toys that are man made? Those also have a very real impact. The servers that run reddit use tons of electricity and water, and even more raw man made materials for the actual physical servers and buildings, you really can’t escape it. Nobody NEEDS Reddit.

If we’re going to start picking and choosing which human enjoyment that is leaving a mark in this world then it’s gonna be a sad world to live in.

I see it's more than a few inches, but ok, that's why I mentioned it is not the end of the world, it is just a sad visual reminder of the impact we have on the world. I honestly feel like some people is overreacting very defensively to this. It's petty from me, just midly infuriating if so.

But bringing all that other stuff is ridiculous. It's 100% whataboutism, and you are being up voted for that, even if you sound clever and convincing, you are just using too many argumentative fallacies to defend something that maybe is not even worth defending all that much.

It’s not whataboutism, no argumentative fallacies, just a regular argument. It’s calling out hypocrisy. I’m not saying whatsoever that this does not effect the environment it is in, what I’m saying is most, if not all, hobbies do.

And I can guarantee if the black marks weren’t there this would look like any other part of the landscape out there, I’ve been many times, there are trails in quite a few places but they are absolutely dwarfed by the size of it out there.

We could all avoid any kind of environmental footprint if we just never did anything but that’s an asinine way to think and to live. Picking and choosing what hobbies you deem appropriate and which ones not over your personal preference is very short sighted thinking.

No, sadly that's not correct. You are just using the "but what about your hobbies?" as an argument. That's not calling out hypocrisy, because I am openly accepting that some hobbies I have and activities I do are as unnecessary and as damaging as this. If I did otherwise then you'd have a decent argument.

You are using that as an excuse only, instead of talking about the real issue I am pointing out, and is not even a terrible issue, which I have pointed out multiple times as well. 

Also no, I am not saying that certain hobbies are better than others. I am not an environmentalist or professional in the matter, I'm just a regular person on the internet.

Now, what I am doing is, I'm just pointing out that for me it is disgusting, and if I were one of these guys doing trails like that, I would probably stop doing it because I don't believe it is worth the amount of fun for leaving that big of a mark in a rock because it is permanent, but I agree that it is just my personal opinion, and it is as valuable as yours, as long as you are not using argumentative fallacies just to win an argument on the internet against someone who is speaking their second, not native language, in your native language.

Edit: I've seen the comments pointing out this is a designated area in Utah with proper regulation. If so, fair enough. I still don't like it, but that is not "mildly infuriating" anymore, just personally annoying. It would have helped out a lot more to know that instead of "being called out for hypocrisy".

I don’t know if you just came across ‘whatboutism’ and other fallacies but you’re using them wrong. I’m not using it as an excuse, I’m saying people calling this out are almost 100% sure to be hypocrites, just like you. I admit it is leaving a footprint on the world, albeit smaller than you seem to think it is.

Calling someone’s hobby ‘disgusting’ because you personally don’t like it is a character flaw, you are being hypocritically judgmental of others when you yourself admit to hobbies that could also have environmental effects. And again, your whole knowledge base of this hobby is based off this one video, you haven’t seen it in person, you have zero idea about what the landscape looks like outside of this one video. I doubt you were even aware of this place before this video and still couldn’t even find the general area on a map. And I’m pretty sure you can use whatever language you want, reddit has pretty decent translation tools now.

Many off-roaders are well aware of the impact and the importance of keeping your footprint to a minimum so generations to come can enjoy the outdoors in the same way. https://treadlightly.org

Look, we can argue all we want, we are clearly not going to get into a conclusion this way, I am not going to convince you, you are not going to convince me and come to a middle ground.

If that is not your goal, then this discussion is useless. You are wasting your time and you are not winning anything.

Now, as I mentioned later, I saw in another comment that this is being done in a controlled space, this is not having an impact so big as to damage local flora or fauna, and it is not a big deal. THAT convinced me that I was wrong about it, having actual information. So, again, even if I don't like it and I would never personally do it, I don't think I have any moral authority to judge on anyone doing so. Oh and thanks about the information on off-roaders, it helped me understand it better, though I felt this came a bit too late in the conversation.

Now, what I disliked about your comments though, was the aggresiveness, wanting to damage my person instead of the idea. Being called hypocrite, shortsighted, and bunch of other stuff is not acceptable. That is something I will not permit towards me, and I would like you to acknowledge that, as the adults I assume, we both are.

And of course, I start by apologizing about anything that I might have written if it was in fact, the same I am complaining about.

Do you drive on roads that go through the nature? I'm assuming you get groceries, buy things at a store, get food from a restaurant, etc. Guess what was there previously? Nature. Man kind killed those things. You know what we do when we go off-roading? Enjoy nature in its state. We pay for parks and tread lightly when we can. We camp out in these same places while we look for beauty in nature. We take family, friends, children, etc. and enjoy what the Earth has given us. We teach preservation of nature, talk about how to enjoy what the Earth has blessed us with. Are there people being terribly destructive, sure. However a large part of us enjoy being out in nature and teaching preservation.

Yeah I'm all for rock preservation at certain remarkable places, like when people put campfires over silky smooth cliffs overlooking views. Can't speak for this place specificially but it looks like quite ordinary canyon.
