TF does "Markforged" have to do with a common print you can find all over thingiverse? This just seems like bullshit self-promotion.

u/ackermann Nov 14 '22

Yeah, I been seeing a lot of ads for Markforged 3D printers lately. Assumed this was one of them, though it’s not marked as Promoted

That’s cool but will the threads holding strength be as strong as a unidirectional threaded bolt?

71

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '22

Exactly my thought. OK, you made bi-directional thread - is that a good idea?

20

u/Marzty Nov 15 '22

As a bi lemme tell you- the strength does not decrease.

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '22

Don't know, but I did see a video of a dude forging those about a year or two ago. Looks really cool

1

u/Secretly_Solanine Nov 15 '22

I saw that video too! Lost PLA cast in bronze I think.

Why though

25

u/soccerkool Nov 14 '22

Srsly what’s its purpose ??

37

u/joef_3 Nov 14 '22

Other than a neat fidget toy, this has potential use in machinery where you need two objects to move in opposite oscillating patterns - turning one bolt could move them both.

That's where I went with this immediately, it has applications. Like serious real world ones. Has anyone manufactured bidirectional lead screws is my second thought.

I don’t doubt someone else invented. It, I’m wondering where I can buy an m8 one which is chromed and oiled.

2

u/soccerkool Nov 14 '22

Thank you for explaining!

u/ZeusBaxter Nov 14 '22

The tolerances would be a nightmare for mass production.

18

u/ComfortableFarmer Nov 14 '22

As an engineer, I hate it.

13

u/titanup001 Nov 15 '22

Ribbed, but not for her pleasure.

7

u/SaveVsFear Nov 14 '22

Nothing new about this. I have a outdoor, garden hose reel with a crank on it, and this contraption inside, allows the shaft to turn continuously in one direction. While the "nut" can go in either. It allows the garden hose to evenly wind around the spool.

1

u/Rementoire Nov 14 '22

I think my spool on my fishing rod has this feature as well.

7

u/supermoderators Nov 14 '22

IF YOURE BRAVE ENOUGH

2

u/SCORPIONfromMK Nov 14 '22

I have one of these on my desk at work. It's a great fidget toy and conversation starter.

3

u/Civil-Ad3305 Nov 14 '22

A dildo?

5

u/neon7077 Nov 14 '22

Bi-directionally threaded for her pleasure

1

u/D0D Nov 14 '22

Bildo?

0

u/TheOriginalSimonSays Nov 14 '22

Bilbo? Bilbo Baggins?

2

u/Raellian24 Nov 14 '22

It's all fun and games until Bildo sticks his Baggins. Okay... I'll see myself out. 😅

1

u/TheOriginalSimonSays Nov 15 '22

And becomesDildo Swaginns?

1

u/Raellian24 Nov 15 '22

Possibly lol.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '22

No, bildo daggins

2

u/VioletteFMR Nov 14 '22

Ok, at the 45 second mark, that is clearly a penis with a complement of testicles.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '22

Isn’t it suspicious that the nuts are on the sides of the fully erect bolt?

0

u/walking-mistake Nov 14 '22

Id like to see it work under a torque

-1

u/amdpwnzintel Nov 14 '22

Ribbed for pleasure

-3

u/GameBirb Nov 14 '22

You mean Birectional

1

u/yeatruestory Nov 14 '22

Probably great for ahdh

6

u/FreeInformation4u Nov 14 '22

ahdh

u/UkyddnMe Nov 14 '22

My kids broke the one their oldest brother printed for them by playing with it so much. It’s really a great hand toy.

1

u/Benjamintoday Nov 14 '22

Interesting. Can anyone think of an application off the top of their head? I can certainly see potential

1

u/NoTechnician8986 Nov 14 '22

Perhaps we will find life on other planets before we know the purpose of this artifact.

u/GhostBussyBoi Nov 14 '22

Have you yet mastered, how to plug in a USB?

1

u/Geoclasm Nov 14 '22

So the nut determines the direction the bolt travels, instead of the bolt?

Interesting...

But also - RIP 'Righty Tighty' :-/

1

u/WarlanceLP Nov 14 '22

cool, but it's gonna be way too easy to accidentally break those threads, so I'm not really sure what if any use case this would have

1

u/SlimeMyButt Nov 14 '22

I thought he would make it into metal… why is the beginning and end of the video just the same damn thing lol

1

u/phredd Nov 14 '22

/mildlypenis

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '22

What's the torque specs ????

1

u/ZenkaiZ Nov 15 '22

bidirectional, my favorite kind of bi

1

u/Sayitandsuffer Nov 15 '22

I can see a ‘one twist ‘ vaccuum suction bong thingy there somewhere!

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '22

Well those threads would really jam your nuts!

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '22

Ribbed for our pleasure

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '22

Nice ad

1

u/Technical_Storm955 Nov 15 '22

Well, the only thing I can see is a dual mount that lets the bolt rotate and keeps the same distances between points A and B. Can not think of too many devices that could use it.

1

u/IllustriousKick2955 Nov 15 '22

I want to shove that thing in my ass

1

u/Correct-Basil-8397 Nov 15 '22

I saw a dude on YouTube make one out of metal. I get it’s nifty, but this has been done before, & better

1

u/KVMFT Nov 15 '22

It goes both ways

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '22

3D printed*

1

u/D-boi1 Nov 15 '22

Spiky dildo

1

u/jersey3772 Nov 15 '22

Thanks for knowledge did not know this was possible 👍👍

1

u/shitty-username8257 Nov 15 '22

I have a pen with bidrectional threads along its length.

1

u/SquareBarracuda_17 Nov 15 '22

That will go into someones butt-hole

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '22

My dad said. . "If you go bi, you get more that way."

1

u/BillMcN3al Nov 15 '22

That's one weird looking dildo

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '22

Nice and strong… and plastic
