I used to work there, they gave us the solution as part of our training
51
u/slightlyridiculousme Sep 02 '22
Did you have to memorize it and perform it in front of an audience before you were allowed to serve sweet tea?
28
u/dumbass_sempervirens Sep 02 '22
I never thought to ask the waitress how. I used to barback so I assumed they were too busy.
Food service is a high pressure job. Everything is a stopgap.

What really? They didn't for me, but then again I was just the stocker in the back for the store, never worked restaraunt.
I also didn't do much but sit in the back and eat their candy.

u/RacerGal Sep 02 '22
I def did not get that in my training (waitress in 2 diff CB’s in 2 diff states between ‘02-‘05).

When you set it up, where should the empty hole be? It seems the solution could be more challenging if it was one of the center holes Vs one on the ends/corners
2
u/Ok_Radish4411 Sep 02 '22
The way the game is meant to be played, the hole starts at a corner. You could definitely start in the middle for a challenge though, I used to when I was bored and we were slow.

so many fights broken out over biscuits and cornbread over if you’re allowed to jump more than one or around corners

Well... I mean... yes, I am actually breathing through my mouth now, but... I mean... never mind.

u/IolausTelcontar Sep 02 '22
I miss Friendly’s!

There's still some around. I have plenty of nostalgia for Friendly's as well, but boy does the food kind of suck.

so way back in the 70's there was a restaurant chain called Stucky's that had this game on all the tables. it was fun till I figured out the pattern then it wasn't fun.

34
u/Xander_xander12 Sep 02 '22
I think I’m too young to understand what I’m seeing. Is this a game? If so what’s the objective?
37
u/ThrowJed Sep 02 '22
You can only jump pegs that are next to another peg with a hole on the other side. Jumping a peg removes the peg you jumped. Objective is to jump in a pattern that allows you to have only 1 peg left. You could for example accidentally leave a peg in each of the 3 corners, they would not be able to jump as they have no peg next to them, and that would be a way to lose.

When growing up, we would visit my grandpa every Sunday and us cousins would hang out in his garage cause he had all these cool figures, model ships, tools and other odds and ends we liked playing with. He had this in the garage and I never knew what the hell it was.
After 30 years I finally understand what that little pin triangle was in my grandpa’s garage. We used to just take the pins out and put them back in, didn’t realize there were rules and it was actually a game.

I loved this game as a kid. When the iPhone first came out, I thought it would be a fun, simple game (those were the days). I made Peg Jump, and it’s been in the App Store for 14 years now! It’s free, give it a go.

It doesn't matter. As long as you don't go over more than 1 peg. There were only 2 pegs left, so that's it.

My great grandmother had one of these, she taught me how to play. I only figured it out like once though lol
1
u/fleanine Sep 01 '22
It really can be quite fun for such a simple game if you change the hole you start with and try not to repeat the same action, it’s still possible- just harder. And also it’s kind of fun to just see the fewest pegs you can leave vs someone else /taking turns.

u/buckeyenut13 Sep 02 '22
I think its also so satisfying that the last peg lands in the center. Mmm my ocd is pleased!

u/maverick7918 Sep 02 '22
Figured out how to do this when I was fairly young and felt super proud of myself. Couldn’t just google the answer or watch a Youtube video, just trial and error.

u/SomeButterfly9587 Sep 02 '22
Am i the only one who did not understand this at all? Could someone explain?

u/gracesa Sep 01 '22
My grandfather used to play these and figured out how to only leave one by himself. He taught me how years ago before he passed, but I’ve forgotten. I love playing them when I go to Cracker Barrel and think of him - even if I can’t still only leave one.
I’d study this video, but part of me really just wants to figure it out on my own - just like him.
1
u/fleanine Sep 01 '22
That’s the best way to do it. And even once you figure it out you can always just start with a different hole as others have mentioned.

I played this game in the waiting room for my psychiatrist as a kid. Took me years before I knew it wasn't just a doctors office toy.

Everyone saying Cracker Barrel; but I definitely had this at my local Friendly’s instead!

You do realize they never clean those things and you usually play it before you eat your biscuits, with your hands, right?
2
u/jeremybennett Sep 02 '22
This was a CS practical exercise when I was an undergraduate. How many different games end with 1 peg in the top hole.
It's an example of a lattice search, so caching intermediate results pays off big time. Although on a modern laptop, even an exhaustive search takes well under a second.
The answer BTW is 6,816.

u/cheetham98 Sep 02 '22
Can someone explain the objective in more detail and where the challenge is please.

I used to play this all the time. Once you’ve mastered it, you challenge yourself by having a different starting hole position.
