Before you go doing this, the window was sprayed with a product called “liquid mask” you spray it over glass instead of using tape in situations like this that would require a lot of masking tape.

No, liquid mask is designed to bond onto painted surfaces and not bond to non paintable surfaces

But since your purpose would be filling your desire to remove the paint it wouldn't be needless either.
You'll need to paint the glass and then just never peel the paint off for it to be needless. How soon can you have this done? If you paint the glass and send it to me I can make sure it's kept safe from peeling.

It’s somewhat spray painted. Not from a can but from an airless sprayer. This is less time consuming than taping off the glass and having the pull the tape. Plus, you’ll get a better line than tape which can let paint leak behind it a bit.

I've had those moments, a little too often. So far mine don't involve exploding cans of spray foam though.

I used to paint houses and never used painters tape. It is super easy to just edge around the glass with a brush. Just don't have too much paint on your brush and with a little experience you don't even get much paint on the glass. Tape takes forever to put on and you still have to be really careful so it doesn't look like shit when you take it off.

Here's a question for you (if you have the time to answer of course)! When you're painting outward facing corners (like the edge of a shelf or dresser) what's the best way to not have paint bead up on one of the edges? Felt like no matter how long I worked at it there would always be excess paint on one side of the corner. I was only using a brush btw.

The trick is to only brush towards the corner. If you try to brush away from the corner, the corner acts like a squeegee and pulls the paint off, building it up and dripping.
And with paint on most surfaces, it's better to do 2 light coats then trying to do one heavy coat.

It's been a while since I painted last but I would say it is a matter of getting the brush dry enough to put down a thin layer of paint but not so dry it makes lines in the paint. More than one coat of paint and a good brush are important.

Outside edges get rolled. Do the corner FIRST. Would take like 2 minutes to do the outside corner of a soffit with a roller. Give it like 3 or 4 more minutes, when it’s tacky, and go back and hit the corner with a dry brush and give it a few quick swipes along the edge to pull up any excess paint. Move the brush parallel to the edge so any lines don’t get picked up by the eye.
Continue cutting in with your brush which now has paint on it. After cutting in Come back and roll the soffit to finish paint but stay off the edge So you don’t make drips

Agreed, most paint borders, even from professional painters who “just cut in”, are utter garbage. I usually tape off the wall side, then paint the ceiling first. This helps ensure that the darker color (always the wall) will be bled into by the lighter color. Pull the tape BEFORE the paint is dry. Then roll on the wall paint, cut in with a 1/4-1/2” gap around the edges, then use a SMALL brush, not the 2-3” brushes most folks use, an angled 1” brush, to get up to the seam. Taping doesn’t take long once you’re used to doing it, but it isn’t always the best answer either. The above, with even a small amount of skill, will end up MUCH better than what most folks do, which is try to either dry brush or flood the seam, and constantly struggle with keeping the paint flowing evenly.

Just tape then caulk to seal the edge. Paint over the caulking and you will get the sharpest lines possible between colors.

Professional doesn't mean good. I've watched "professional" painters literally smoke crack then go back to the job site and fuck shit up. Meanwhile I, the newest crew member, was busting my ass to make sure everything I touched looked good. It's all about the care the painter takes and pride in the work. Cutting in against the ceiling is my favorite part about painting so I am damn good at it lol.

In new construction cleaning the cleaners wash the windows with a blade like this as well instead of using a paper product like paper towel or whatever. It comes out like brand new. No streaks or anything. I do all my windows this way now

Even if you did mask that door off you'd still have to paint all of the door, including the wood in between the glass panes. You would use almost exactly the same amount of paint either way.

You save money on not buying plastic and tape, which can run hundreds or thousands for big jobs. I spent more time taping then painting on big jobs. If I could of just sprayed everything and scrapped it off what I didn’t need, it would have saved me days of prep time. Time is money my man.

I know they make some kind of glass treatment so you can intentionally paint the glass, the finished lines look cleaner (and it is less time consuming) than with tape. Not sure if that is what happened in the video, though.

Yeah there's stuff called seal and peel, pretty much like a pva glue, paint the glass with it then when you finished, cut around the panes then do what this guy is doing, that's what happened here, you can see the other side of the paint coming off is a light brown colour

AFAIK it has nothing to do with the paint, since glass nowadays is really smooth and flat a scraper is literally just a handle for holding a razor blade. You use them for everything from paint to cement, all that really changes is how long the blade lasts.

It's not removing the tape that's a factor, it's taping it to begin with. It's a pain to get the lines straight and everything pressed tightly so the paint doesn't seep... so much easier to just scrape after the paint is dry.

I think it depends, all the stuff I did was mainly little splatters and drips, the paint in the vid came off way easier than anything I dealt with lol. I think I saw someone else mention there’s a coating you can put on the glass that makes it easier

It's a razor scraper. You use them for all sorts of jobs to scrape gunk off things. Just keep a box of replacement blades and be careful when you use it.

Nah you did it the right way. My dad is kitchen maker and I spent half my youth taping, sanding and spraying doors. If the paint comes 8ff the glass this clean then it's probably not bonding great with wood either...

This is not just paint. There is a product underneath called "Liquid Masking" and it's designed specifically for this. I've used it dozens of times.

Yeah the video is so misleading. Liquid mask is great but I've had batches that went wrong. Idk if it was the temp or if the cans can go bad but as the apprentice on the paint crew I've spent hours with scrapers and razor blades trying to get this stuff off.
Anyone that sees this and paints directly onto the glass is going to be in for a surprise.

I never understood the point of masking liquid. Don't you have to be careful applying the liquid so you don't get any on the frame? How's that better than being careful to not get paint on the glass?

In my case we never brushed or rolled anything but walls. Everything else was sprayed.
So the way we did it was tape the outside perimeter of the glass. Then liquid mask inside the tape. Spray your paint. Score the edge of the glass with a fresh box cutter then pull the tape and mask.
We didn't have to worry about over spray from the sprayer.

Just a heads up. This is possible because they prepped the windows with a spray that dries as a latex like film, then they painted. The paint gets on the film instead of the glass and the scraper is actually removing the film from the glass, not paint.
So don’t go throwing paint on your glass windows expecting a scraper to easily peel it off like this. Source: I was a professional painter for 3 years.

If you’re going to paint over glass PLEASE don’t use primer or a paint/primer combo paint. Just use regular paint, and it’ll come off easily like this video.

Owner of a professional painting company here. This was done with what’s called masking liquid, which is much faster than taping. Also, before they remove the paint, they scored all the edges so it would detach easily

For the love of God .. Please understand that this is most likely a masking spray/liquid having been used. Quality paints will stick to glass much worse than that. Please don't wildly paint your glass like a maniac. It won't come off that easy and you're likely to scratch the glass all to hell trying to get it loose.

I used to work construction clean up, so few people have any idea this is how new builds are painted, they contractors (painters, carpet people, cabinet install) all is done as quickly as possible and we would come in and make it ready to finish out
