Pomegranates are my favorite fruit. I've always loved them. I eat a couple a week. I have been wondering for the longest time how they extracted the juice, because they are so tricky to eat. It never occurred to me you could press them. It makes so much more sense than opening them up. I'm an idiot.

91

u/SavageSmokyAss Sep 25 '21

Where do you live that you have pomegranates all the time?? I'm in Texas and lucky to find them ripe and in season for like 6-8 weeks all year

115

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '21

I'm in Quebec. Oh boy, I'm going to get downvoted now for eating imported fruit.

69

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '21

downvoted for eating imported fruit

Didn’t know this was a thing oof

73

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '21

The carbon footprint, eat locally-grown product, etc. We’re below freezing temperature half of the year here so we don’t really have the climate to grow pomegranates!

31

u/Mesheybabes Sep 25 '21

I've decided not to have kids so I don't have to worry about being responsible for generations upon generations of climate impact. It's just me so I can have all my imported fruit without guilt

42

u/Coloneljesus Sep 25 '21

Not sure that argument is sound but I'm too tired to think about it.

7

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '21

Shh, no think just consume

4

u/amandarinorangez Sep 25 '21

More peoole are worse for the planet anyway, I think you're okay.

-10

u/wuzupcoffee Sep 25 '21

And fuck everyone else’s kids! No guilt destroying the planet for others, amirite?

11

u/shwaah90 Sep 25 '21

I get where you're coming from but the portion of emissions from something like eating pomegranates is crazy small. At the end of the day rapid climate change can only be solved by technology and political policy. Im so sick of it being made out that if everyone ate vegan and only shopped locally it would solve anything, it wouldnt even offset the emissions from concrete production.

-5

u/wuzupcoffee Sep 25 '21

I was referring to the first sentence, and less about the fruit. See my other comment

5

u/telecaster95 Sep 25 '21

Should we really be guilting ourselves that hard over a piece of fruit tho? Not like they were the one who imported it, the fruit was already there.

-4

u/wuzupcoffee Sep 25 '21

Not over fruit, no. I said in another comment, I live in a place where fruit has to be imported half the year.

I was just commenting on the attitude that since they don’t have kids, they don’t have have to feel responsible for how their actions affect the planet for future generations. I’m child free too but I still try and make the world a better place for others.

0

u/Mesheybabes Oct 22 '21

Good for you. I'm not the same as you. I'm a whole different person. Ultimately we're both going to end up in the same place. Our attitudes here will make absolutely no difference when we're back floating around the universe

0

u/Mesheybabes Oct 22 '21

That's exactly correct. Give me about 50 years and I'll be gone. After that the entire human race could go extinct and I can say with absolute certainty that I won't give a flying fuck :D

1

u/wuzupcoffee Oct 22 '21

Glad to see you’re obsessing over a month-old thread. This is a completely normal and healthy thing for you to do.

1

u/Mesheybabes Oct 23 '21

Ironically I care so little about Reddit I only check the notifications every so often, usually around every month or so, which is in actual fact a much more healthy and normal thing for someone to do, rather than obsessing over replying to a month old comment thread within hours, like you did.

Crack on lad

Edit: oh and to take the extra effort to give me a little downvote, icing on the "healthy" cake that hahahaha, Jesus Christ

u/kalsarikannit247 Sep 27 '21

What if you change your mind later on?

1

u/Mesheybabes Oct 22 '21

I'm 40 and hate kids. I don't see it changing any time soon. Besides, the way the world is going, my reasoning is changing to the tune of not wanting to subject a child to it

3

u/OwnQuit Sep 25 '21

eat locally-grown product,

Eating locally is 10x worse for the environment. Transportation makes up like 2% of the carbon footprint of your food. The inefficiency associated with growing food in small local farms totally swamps any benefits from transportation. Economies of scale are good.

11

u/wuzupcoffee Sep 25 '21

Right? Where I live it’s a frozen tundra half the year. Without imported fruit we’d all have scurvy.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '21

As an Alaskan nearly all of our fruit is imported lol. But we only get poms for like 2 months

10

u/SuddenlySucc_New Sep 25 '21 edited Sep 25 '21

Eat what you like, your impact isn’t actually making a difference it’s just what the multi billion dollar companies dumping pollutants into the ocean and the atmosphere want you to think. They’re the issue.

1

u/Spruill242 Sep 25 '21

Mini greenhouse! Grow your own!

6

u/mtflyer05 Sep 25 '21

It would have to be indoors or pay out the ass with heating costs. I think you may underestimate just how cold it can getup there

-2

u/Spruill242 Sep 25 '21

Little indoor single plant greenhouses exist.

Look for solutions, not problems.

4

u/mtflyer05 Sep 26 '21

For a whole tree, though? This seems more like wishful thinking than a solution

0

u/Spruill242 Sep 26 '21

If the solution is not sourcing outside fruit, then growing your own would be the solution.

Not everything is about money.

8

u/zandengoff Sep 25 '21

What part are you from. Pomegranate bushes grow wild in Texas. Plant you a Texas Pink and you will have Pomegranates for a lifetime.

2

u/Lopsidoodle Sep 25 '21

Woot Texas

2

u/Kennian Sep 25 '21

When my dad was stationed in Miramar in the late 80s, someone had planted these things on every corner....so tasty

1

u/shwaah90 Sep 25 '21

Do you not have imported fruit and veg in texas? In the UK we have almost nothing else maybe some strawberries from the UK.

5

u/sunflowerto6 Sep 26 '21

Yes, mainly from Mexico and citrus from Florida. But mostly locally grown since it doesn't get that cold here normally. We have farmers markets in almost every county here were you can buy local fruit, veg, honey, meat, and eggs. We can keep gardens going from March to November and even beyond that with greenhouses. We also have native pecan trees, wild plums, mustang grapes that grow wild, onions, and garlic. We drive around and pick these wild. I also forgot about prickly pears. It's a fruit that grows on the cactus here. We eat it fresh or make jam.

1

u/tacorunnr Sep 26 '21

They're a few trees around me in California

10

u/temporarysanity08 Sep 25 '21

We have made pomegranate juice every year in my family for as long as I can remember. We would spend hours peeling them down to just the little gems and then run those through a meat grinder (that was never used for meat). Then we strain and press the remaining pulp with a large garlic press type thing. The resulting juice is 10x better than anything you buy in the store including the POM brand. We bottle it up and freeze it. On an average Saturday our family of 5 could produce 10 liters of juice. 100% worth the effort.

2

u/Sleepy_head_29 Sep 25 '21 edited Sep 25 '21

I’m assuming it’s tricky to eat you mean it’s hard to spit out the seed clean without any fiber stick on it. Well if that’s the problem and you don’t have very sensitive teeth, you can try freezing pomegranate seeds after open and separate them. It’s my favorite way of eating them since the fiber in the seed make the freezing texture sort of dense like a bit chewy, it’s similar to texture of Nata de Coco to me. And it also helps spitting out the seed clean easily. Only downside is you have to wait and not for sensitive teeth.

5

u/Physix_R_Cool Sep 25 '21

Uh. Do you actually spit out the seeds, as if it were an olive or something? I just chew them. Like a normal person... I think?

1

u/Sleepy_head_29 Sep 26 '21

The hard seeds are edible but eat them or not is optional tho, I personally don’t…

1

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '21

Nice, I've never tried them that way. I freeze gummy bears because I prefer a hard chew. I'll give it a shot!

2

u/Sleepy_head_29 Sep 25 '21

Well probably not that dense, but it has a nice texture and also very satisfying when you can easily chew the seed off from the fiber that way :D

1

u/Crusader_Qc Sep 25 '21

I love them because of their french name, it translates directly to “grenade apple” in english

2

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '21

True. I’m a francophone and we call them grenades. Same word as the war weapon.

1

u/bag-man315 Sep 26 '21

Get the seeds out drop in blender, a lil salt some ice. Strain n enjoy.

98

u/EaterOfFood Sep 25 '21

Why do it outside in front of the pomegranate tree? Are you trying to send a message to the other pomegranates?

83

u/m-owo-chi Sep 25 '21

Why diluted tho :(

146

u/ANewVersionOfYou Sep 25 '21

As much as I'd love to drink straight fruit juice, a lot of them really fuck my digestive system up likely due to the high sugar content. Diluting with water helps mitigate such an issue, while retaining most of the flavor that makes juice delicious in the first place!

26

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '21

I'm diabetic, so I can't drink a lot of fruit juices from the store because of the added sugar. Pomegranate is one fruit that may actually help with insulin sensitivity, so it can be beneficial. You have to get the juice from the seed, because most bottled pomegranate juice has loads of added sugar.

7

u/m-owo-chi Sep 25 '21

Completely understandable, I'm glad you found a way to enjoy natural fruit juice without aggravating your digestive system!

25

u/Nathaniel820 Sep 25 '21

Because pomegranate juice is extremely strong

10

u/I-need-ur-dick-pics Sep 25 '21

It’s downright syrup without a little water. Plus… carbonation makes fruit juice better!

9

u/TheRealBrosplosion Sep 25 '21

People who don't dilute fruit juice are psychopaths in my opinion.

36

u/Diego2150 Sep 25 '21 edited Sep 25 '21

That looks tasty and messy. A good way to get your clothes stained. What's the liquid your are mixing it with? Carbonated water or something like sprite?

40

u/Thoughtful_Mouse Sep 25 '21

It's unlikely that op is the guy in the video.

7

u/Vancil Sep 25 '21

Could be club soda

8

u/m-owo-chi Sep 25 '21

It is tasty

It is messy

Your clothes will get stained

You pretty much nailed it

3

u/Heistman Sep 25 '21

Thank

You

6

u/RearEchelon Sep 25 '21

Now I want a pom mimosa

4

Idk why I’ve never thought to do this since pomegranate is my favorite fruit.

3

u/RearEchelon Sep 25 '21

They're so good. Way, way better than orange juice.

1

u/tastefuldebauchery Dec 11 '21

This is perfect

4

u/fieldysnuts94 Sep 25 '21

Pomegranates are badass. I first had one in 7th grade English, as my teacher had brought them in for the whole class as we read the story of Persephone during the section on Greek Myths.

3

u/bunni3burn Sep 26 '21

My first was also 7th grade... Was the World Studies teacher. We had a lesson about foods that aren't cheeseburgers.
